Another powder day today, with snowfall all night. The winds are viscious today, strong across the peaks so expect wind to play havoc with lift operations today.

We wake to 25cm of fresh in town, with more on the mountain. Rug up with all you have today and get set to enjoy the lighter than normal snow which has been falling here for the last few days.

Niseko Now!

Thursday 14th February 2008, 8:20am
Weather conditions: Snowstorm.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The strong winds yesterday shut all but the very bottom lifts at 3pm. There was a lot of snow but all the lower slopes were skied out quickly as there was nowhere else to ski. The line up for the gondola stretched way up the slope. The temperature at the Ace thermometer read -16 and at the Gondola it read -5. It was an extreme winter's day which should set up some perfect Niseko powder in the next few days.

As soon as the lifts open on top there will be some outrageous riding to be had. There are seas of 4 meters and the winds have piled up fresh snow drifts in town this morning.
The charts are showing a very deep low directly over Hokkaido today so the wind levels will likely be quite high until tomorrow when the low disapates and begins to move north east. The next few days will still bring some moderate snowfalls so hopefully the mountain will be back on track by the weekend.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 14th February 2008, 8:30am
Weather conditions: Light Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We have had another 10cm of snow in the village overnight. It is fairly cold at the moment and snow showers have been moving through frequently over the past few hours. The forecast calls for snow to set in during the afternoon and for the cold temps and wind to continue.

With the current weather pattern seemingly here to stay there should be plenty of freshies to be had over the next week. It is a pleasure to watch skilled boarders and skiers ride through the knee deep pow with aplomb.

Once again snow depth figures are yet to be updated. Check back later for another report.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 14th February 2008, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow continues!

There has been another 20cm or so since last night (maybe more - the winds are making it difficult to give a number) and the winds are still quite strong at times. Right now only light snow is falling, but snow is forecast throughout today and indeed throughout tomorrow as well with temperatures unlikely to rise above zero for the next few days.

It might be windy but the conditions out there on the mountains will be excellent with lots of fresh fluffy stuff to play in.

Due to the winds, Gala Yuzawa is closed again today and the Kagura resort - whilst reporting another 40cm on the slopes up top) is on limited operations (Kagura - Mitsumata No 1 quad lift + Mitsumata No 3 Romance lift open; Kagura Gondola + Kagura No 1 Romance lift + Kagura No 1 quad lift - may open later depending on conditions; Tashiro - closed).

Looking further ahead, it may be a while before we see that sun again with snow forecast over the weekend too. Whatever the weather is over the weekend, it looks like excellent snow conditions is pretty much guaranteed.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 14th February 2008, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Snow/Cloud with patches of blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Real winter conditions in Hakuba yesterday with deep powder in the morning and snow falling most of the day. Strong winds were filling in tracks while riding the lift which made for plenty of fresh lines. Beside the wind it was one of the best days so far this season.

A little bit of snow fell through last night but not enough to produce much accumulation this morning. Not snowing in the village now which is currently at a temperature of -2 degrees C but clouds are hovering fairly low and Goryu as at 8:15 was reporting -9 degree C temps on top with snow falling. Blue skies poking through on the East side of the valley but snow flurries forecast today and through the weekend. Some strong winds today as well which could mean some limited lift access on higher slopes.

Base depth hasn't increased significantly since Tuesday's snowfall due to wind and settlement.

Avalanche Danger Scale and Advisory:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Tree Line: Condsiderable

Alpine: High

High amounts of steady wind and snow Tuesday night has increased the likelyhood of natural and skier triggered avalanches. Wind transport of snow (cornices and snow drifts) is present and frequent in both south and north faces. Be aware that even on-resort terrain might be prone to avalanches on steeper and open lee-ward faces. Expect sluffing on steeper terrain and avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths.    Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 14th February 2008, 9:40am
Weather conditions: white sky with sunny spells
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
So the snow petered off at times yesterday but we still received another 40cm since yesterdays writings. The main Naeba hill is barely visible again this morning whilst the wind rages around these mountains and further lashes the town with the light snow fall and drifting snow. Pretty cold too, with the temperature still stooping nearer the -10 degrees as opposed to the usual linger around zero.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 14th February 2008, 9:42am
Weather conditions: Snow, strong winds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow clouds are still with us this morning, but in some directions breaks in the clouds can be seen with some bright patches showing through.... and whether that will stay like that or go one way or the other I don't know, but looking at the forecast it looks like we should expect more snow over the next few days.

Winds this morning are not as strong as yesterday and more lifts should be moving. With the new snow over the last few, it should be full powder conditions and as there aren't many people out there it's a great day to hit the slopes. Get wrapped up well though as it is still bitterly cold - perhaps not as much as yesterday, but down to around -11 degrees early this morning. Brrrr.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Ichinose Family
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 14th February 2008, 10:25am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing at 2cm/hour
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the snow came down hard and fast with 70cm of fresh by the evening but strong winds transporting much of the snow in exposed areas.

Today the wind and snow has eased slightly with a current rate of precipitation of 2cm/hour. The outlook for the rest of the day and all of Friday is now snow.

The weekend has also changed to snow with some cloudy periods on Saturday and Sunday. The wind looks like it will be calmer over the weekend as a large area of high pressure engulfs Japan.

Backcountry Advisory
The new snow is not bonding well with the sun crust layer from Monday, creating sluffs varying from 30cm-50cm deep on steeper terrain. Caution is advised in large steep and exposed terrain. Be careful of terrain traps.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable
Tree Line: Considerable
Below Tree line: Moderate   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 14th February 2008, 18:58pm
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Looking back on this season I have used words like 'puking' and 'dumping' a lot in my reports, but today it really did snow hard. Probably the most daytime snow we have seen this season. I would hazard a guess that 30cm fell from 1pm this afternoon. Up top the visibility and wind were not the best, but the black runs down the mountain were sublime. Even the groomed runs provided some powder action.    Read more ...
