Geto Kogen Now!
Thursday 14th February 2019, 7:40am
Cloudy, some breaks appearing
Good morning from Geto Kogen.
Ah yes, more snow. 26cm since the report yesterday morning in total. And really good quality snow too. It was snowing during the day yesterday, just cloudy in the evening. Bit of a late start for the quad lift as they coped with all the snow and there was a bit of course closing (A6) for a bit due to poor visibility.
This morning it's cloudy and a bit windy. Bit of blue sky peeking through at times and maybe that will increase during the day.
Official snow depth numbers have debatable meaning (it's the fresh snow that counts on a day to day basis) but it's always good to see them shoot up to over 4m. :)
Official snow depths:
* Top: 415cm * Base: 300cm
Planned operating lifts - subject to change due to weather:
* Number 1 Gondola * Number 1 pair lift * Number 2 pair lift * Quad
* The Number 2 Gondola is usually rested on normal weekdays
Courses & Tree Runs - subject to change due to weather:
* All of the main official courses are available * All tree runs open
It's another sunny day here in Appi and conditions look good for the morning. We are expecting easterly winds and clear visibility today. We had about 5-6cm of snowfall yesterday, but that official snow depth remains firmly on 120cm (possibly next to move!)
The temperatures are really cold again today, and it is -9C at the bottom at the start of the day. Make sure to have extra layers on.
Planned lift operations & course areas (subject to change due to weather conditions):
- Appi Gondola - Central Quad lift - Central Number 2 - Central Number 3A - Central Number 5 - Sailer quad - Vista quad - Nishimori
* All 5 tree run areas should be open as normal when the lift operations allow - register to use them at Plaza 1st Floor
Official groomed snow depth (as reported by resort):
More snow with another 15cm since my report yesterday morning. (Kagura are reporting 20cm and Maiko are reporting 10cm, though those are presumably 'overnight' numbers). So another nice layer of snow to play in this morning and it is still snowing though expected to ease during the morning leaving us just with cloudy skies later.
There may be some sun in the morning tomorrow... and then back to snow on Saturday.
We have returned to some good consistency which is always good to be able to report.
Some ski resorts are giving away chocolate/cocoa/other goodies this morning to celebrate Valentines Day!

It is a glorious start to the day and looking back towards the resort the slopes are shining in the sun having been nicely groomed overnight. The top of the resort has some cloud hovering around the peak. It is a cold morning at -14c but the sun is taking the harshness off that temperature. The forecast is for light snow this morning, so we may see it cloud over possibly with light precipitation, but for now it is bluebird.

Aizu Bandai Now!
Thursday 14th February 2019, 8:25am
Partly cloudy, blue sky
Good morning from the Urabandai area.
It's a lovely morning with quite a lot of blue skies above, some cloud and a bit of fresh snow on the ground. The wind is gentle, not so many skiers around, so a very quiet chilly morning. Great for everyone who can be here now.
All the slopes are keeping in a good condition and the snow is looking lovely and white contrasting with blue skies.
Lots of sun shining through to the south of Mt. Bandai in particular.
There is a snow festival on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th in Kita Shiobara this village - the festival will start from 6pm near Kyukamura Urabandai Hotel. Might be worth checking out if you are around.
The photos for today are from Aits Bandai (first two) and Grandeco.

Still in Tokyo but making my way back to Madarao later today.
And it sounds like it is a good (and cold) morning. The resort is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall; my trusted friend says he measured 32cm since yesterday. I like the sound of that. I always think 25-30cm is a good number to be aiming for!
The webcam shows some limited visibility once again.
Can't wait to get back and ride the snow again tomorrow.
The forecast shows snow easing off today and perhaps some sun tomorrow. Snow on Saturday and then perhaps a spell of clearer skies and milder conditions early next week. (Not too much please).
Planned operations for Thursday 14th February 2019
Official snow depth at Madarao:
All lifts apart from Number 5 plan to be open All 31 courses should be open including tree run courses

Good morning from Niseko.
I almost feel like I could do a bit of automated copy-pasting and spend more time with my toast in a morning at the moment.
There was a bit of blue sky once again for a short time late morning yesterday, but for the most part not much scenery to be enjoyed. But there was most certainly lots of lovely snow to be enjoyed.
And this morning there's another 14cm of snowfall to report.
Snow. Very cold. Limited visibility. That kind of thing. It might be a little more windy today but I doubt enough to trouble the normal operation of lifts.
It still looks like there may be some clearer skies early in the week next week and probably a bit of snow every day until then.
It is Valentines Day today - hurray! - and I suspect there might be some sweets being handed out in places today. If not, I know I'll be jolly disappointed. I see Annupuri are going to be supplying chocolate to the first 100 people who buy a lift ticket this morning - boys or girls. (The 'tradition' in Japan is that Valentines day is when chocolate is supplied to boys from girls. And chocolate is supplied to girls from boys on White Day on March 14th. That lot is a discussion for a different place!)
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain base 6am: -10℃, 15cm snowfall in 24h. Moiwa800m: -12.9℃, W7.3m/s, cornice and snowdrifts developments. Mikaeri junction: -12℃, snowdrifts developments. Annupuri1120m snow depth 250cm. Mizuno no sawa 12cm snowfall in 12h, NNW9-13.5m/s, 185cm snow depth. Hirafu peak: -17℃, strong winds developing snowdrifts, 25cm snowfall in 12h. Suttsu weather station: -5.0℃, 61cm snow depth. Kutchan: -16.9℃, 198cm snow depth. Benkei cape: N9m/s, Kamui cape: NNE3m/s, 1023hPa, 2.0m waves.
Intermittent 10-15m/s northerly storm has persisted above 800m elevation, making cornices and snowdrifts develop slowly. The sea surface temperature is relatively high, making snow clouds form more abundantly and resulting in higher snow precipitation than average. The avalanche hazard level in leeward slopes above 800m elevation is moderately high. All gates are scheduled to open. Do not stimulate cornices and knolls and ride one by one. Avoid valley bottoms and better not stop halfway down a slope. Do not traverse across slopes under cornices. The weather is changing quickly, beware of whiteouts. Safety is never guaranteed in Winter Mountains.
The snow condition is awesome again today.

Light snow during the day yesterday and this morning not huge numbers (20cm sounds good at Cortina), but it is remaining cold and the snow quality looks great. Can't wait to go check it out on the mountain myself. And that's what I'm going to do, right now.
Just before that: looking ahead, perhaps some sun tomorrow, snow on Saturday and then clearer skies around Sunday and Monday. As long as it keeps cold...

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 14th February 2019, 8:33am
Snow clouds still over us
Good morning from Nozawa.
Yes, that's why people are flocking to Nozawa today. At 10:30am on the Hikage area the ski resort will be handing out some free chocolate fondue, whatever that actually is. Sounds good though. And even ladies can have some, it's not just for the blokes. (See: Japan Valentines Day tradition). And I would guess that our favourite skiing Nozawa mascot, who just so happens to be a friendly and bright green vegetable, will also be making an appearance. Though that bit is unconfirmed. Limited amount of chocolate fondue, so don't tell everyone...
Oh, you want some snow news too?!
About 10cm overnight and more during the day yesterday, so a nice fresh layer. It is keeping cold and it is keeping snowing but I wouldn't expect much out of today and there might be some clearer skies tomorrow.

Shiga Kogen Now!
Thursday 14th February 2019, 8:49am
Cloud, some blue sky right now
Morning from Shiga Kogen.
Snow has been falling (and still is) but right now and there's actually quite a bit of blue sky appearing over Maruike. I wonder if that will remain, clear up, or just be a temporary lull. I get the feeling it might clear a bit (total guess).
Still, it is keeping very cold and there's another layer of fresh snow, and it's top quality light snow too. Excellent conditions.
Good chance of some sun tomorrow and then the next snow on Saturday. Early week looks like sun and milder conditions are likely.
Some ski areas will be handing out some chocolate this morning. Valentines Day, you see.

I'm a little sheepish about yesterday's report; I wanted to get it out early, and report in the 20cm level.
And then it started to come down.
Our official poke in the snow, over 24 hours, is 91cm. That includes a lot from yesterday, and it is really coming down now - maybe 3 to 4 cm every hour (it's surprising, given that the snow is not falling that heavily around to the south, such as in Suginohara).
It's even worse at my house, which is open to the north; it's calm at base, but blowing hard from the north.
Probably the same on slopes open to the north wind (and it is cold today! Meaning very nice snow again).
It snowed all day yesterday and then backed off last night before recommencing this morning at around 5am. All told there has only been small amounts on the car park, only 20cm recorded up top at Tenjin but there is plenty up on the mountain and we have another full reset.
The wind is staying away and conditions remain all time here.
The weather is forecast to clear tonight and then snow again tomorrow night. Read more ...
