Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 8:13am
Weather conditions: Rain (town); snow (higher areas)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is 3 degrees in Yuzawa early this morning and raining. The mountains are largely covered in cloud and so poor visibility but I can see that there is snow down to about half way down Yuzawa Kogen.

Kagura is reporting up to 10cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes of Kagura as well with the lower slopes of Naeba looking like they have just had a bit of a sprinkling. It is a fair bit colder up there though with Kagura reporting a temperature of -5 degrees up there.

We are entering a period of at least a few days of some cold temperatures and hopefully snowfall down to town level, though there are conflicting forecasts right now locally. Hopefully we can expect some snowfall higher up today and tomorrow, though how far down the mountainsides that will come is unclear. We can only hope!

Here's another recap on the planned opening dates of the resorts in the area.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 8:28am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
10cm or so of fresh snow is being reported by Kagura early this morning. Down in the village here there has just been a light sprinkling - not enough to really cover the ground on the lower slopes - but it is snowing lightly still and a chilly -1 degree here (and -5 higher on the mountain).

We can expect some more snow today though it doesn't look like it will be that much unfortunately - less than 10cm. While tomorrow and Friday will stay cold, clearer weather is forecast with a potential return to snow Friday night into Saturday.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 8:41am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow continued on and off yesterday, though it didn't really amount to much in terms of cm on the ground. This morning it is coming down with a bit more conviction and it feels like a cold, wintery morning in Shiga Kogen and perhaps 5cm or so on the ground. Please let it snow all day! The forecast does have snowy clouds with us today along with those cold temperatures, but likely that things might ease off tomorrow so it won't be a long snow storm.

Lifts currently operating in the different resort areas of Shiga Kogen:

Sun Valley:

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Finally we have some snow overnight here in Hakuba, and it is still snowing!

We received about 4 cms in the valley this morning of nice powdery snow. This and more stuff like this is exactly what we need to move onto skiing on the whole mountains.

The snow flurries are expected to continue through today increasing in the afternoon and then into Thursday as well. Friday is looking clear then back to the snow on the weekend, so fingers crossed.

We should be having nice turns on the groomers on the areas that are open today.

Happo plan to open up some courses from tomorrow (Thursday).

Lets hope this cold weather continues and the true winter has now rolled in!

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 9:29am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A good fall of 25-30cm last night and still snowing heavily out there. This fall has pushed the snowdepth up high well over the metre mark. More and more courses will be opening as the week progresses. Today they've got a couple of chairs opening at Niseko Village for beginners. From what I've been told they are allowing top to bottom skiing over at Annupuri. Here in Hirafu though it doesn't appear that they are allowing skiing out to the base just yet. With how heavy the snow is falling out there at the moment though I can't imagine it will be much longer. If you're heading up to the Ace #3 lift beware that it's a reasonably slow lift and quite exposed. It's cold up there and wind chills will be well below -20 degrees so make sure you really cover up, especially the face or you may risk frostbite.
The snow quality is light and dry but will be wind packed in more exposed areas. Still it's really looking much more like it should at this time of year with everything covered in lots of snow and the snowdepths are now getting up near average for this time. Plenty more snow forecast for the rest of the week.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 9:38am
Weather conditions: snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was light snow on and off through the day yesterday which left an accumulation of 2cm on the ground over the period of the day. The warm temperatures continued through the day and the main roads at least had all of their snow melted away.

This morning has seen a return to cold temperatures and it is currently a relatively chilly -5deg at the base of the resort. Over night there has been an additional 5cm snow taking the total fresh snow since the last report to 7cm.

The Sailer Course continues to be the only run open, but with recent snowfalls and snowmaking it shouldn't be long before some of the other runs in the Furano Zone open up. Lots of international guests are rolling into town over the week which may mean heavier traffic than usual on the slopes until some of the other runs open up.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 15:15pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A bit of snow falling up high but has been quite a nice day down in the valley. Not much snow overnight but a bit has fallen today with Tenjin reporting 5cm of new snow falling. They are going to assess the situation and decide when to open shortly.

It is a start and with the possibility of snow over the next few nights things are looking good for the weekend.

Zao Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 16:17pm
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well I waited a bit longer to post the report today to get a grip on the situation and what happens during the day.

Good news though - it has been snowing. And it is cold.... very cold.

We have gone from being snowless to having about 20cm or so at the top of the resort, more like 10-15cm in the village. It is still snowing and we should be getting more overnight (another 10-20cm or so?). If that happens then there is a chance that things might get moving tomorrow. I'll let you know tomorrow morning what the verdict is!   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Wednesday 15th December 2010, 17:03pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy and foggy, with continuous light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The word on the street was 30+cm today; it hasn't been that much, but the snow has fallen all through the day. Not the big, fat flakes that you think of when you think Myoko, but it's still snow.

Lift opening is (supposedly) coming up in just three days, so I'll keep the countdown going from now on. Get your best snow dance moves going; rattle the bones or whatever else seems to summon the snow spirits.

Lift operations:

Scheduled opening December 18   Read more ...
