Hakuba Now!

Friday 15th February 2008, 9:12am
Weather conditions: Snow/Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Woke this morning to around 5 cms of the real deal fluffy. With powder this light there's no need to shovel, so I put my pet elephant on car-park duty and one sneeze blew it all away. Unable to even make a snow ball to throw at the kids next door on their way to school I resorted to rolling one of said elephants dung-balls in the super light snow but thankfully missed as I remembered their Dad drives a Toyota Crown with tinted windows and sports a punch-perm and sunglasses all year round.

Regardless of how different your morning was from mine the rest of the day should really be spent in a similar fashion of enjoying open runs, no crowds, no lift lines and some fantastic powder. Snowing on top so visibility is a bit average but no wind and all the lifts are running so get up there
and dig deep in everything that couldn't be touched yesterday.

Snow and real cold temperatures forecast through the weekend = stoke.

Avalanche Danger Scale and Advisory:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Tree Line: Condsiderable

Alpine: High

High amounts of steady wind and snow Tuesday night has increased the likelyhood of natural and skier triggered avalanches. Wind transport of snow (cornices and snow drifts) is present and frequent in both south and north faces. Be aware that even on-resort terrain might be prone to avalanches on steeper and open lee-ward faces. Expect sluffing on steeper terrain and avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 15th February 2008, 9:53am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As is customary in Nozawa we are being treated to yet more snow. Currently there are big fat flakes falling and it is adding to the 25cm that fell in the village yesterday afternoon. The official snow figures are fairly misleading as they are reporting no new snow on the lower slopes. We had the heaviest snow of the season yesterday for 2 to 3 hours and it dropped plenty of snow in the village.

The forecast for this weekend is very promising. Heavy snow tonight and again on Saturday night. It`s a shame the usual weekend rush will crowd the mountain making it harder to find fresh snow.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 15th February 2008, 10:01am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing at 2cm/hour
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
30cm of fresh snow this morning bringing the total snow from this storm (HST) to 1.2m. The snow continues to fall this morning but at a much lighter rate than the past couple of days at around 2cm/hour. There is now wind at the valley level at present.

The snow now looks like it will fall all day tomorrow as well with some moderate winds in the very earl hours of the morning but should ease mid-morning.

Sunday looks like a day of cloud with some snow remaining. The wind should be mild.

Backcountry Advisory
The new snow is not bonding well with the sun crust layer from Monday, creating sluffs varying from 50cm-70cm deep on steeper terrain. Caution is advised in large steep and exposed terrain. Be careful of terrain traps.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable
Tree Line: Considerable
Below Tree line: Moderate   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Friday 15th February 2008, 11:34am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The strong winds yesterday shut all but the very bottom lifts all day long. The snow and wind was constant all day. It was blowing last night. We have woken up to deep snow everywhere and the wind has completely gone in the Village. It is truely a white winter wonderland. Depending on what is happening up high, this could be one of the greatest days on the mountain this season.

The weather pattern that brought the snowstorm seems to have disapated and it looks like the weather will gradually get better over the next few days. There is still the possibility of some moderate snowfalls though to Sunday. By Monday the high pressure system to our west will have moved in and there is a strong posibility of some clear weather by Tuesday.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 15th February 2008, 11:38am
Weather conditions: snowing moderately, no winds today, perfect snow flakes...
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow all day yesterday and another 25cm on the mountain. Yesterdays fresh snow was packed hard by the wind, so was a little heavy and hard to turn, thus a bit frustrating to ski. Today the snow is super light and fluffy and gives perfect resistance when going down the powder runs.

There is knee to waist deep snow to be found of Kuma and Top Chair 3. Furikozawa has been filled in so there are bottomless turns again down there and it’s not a mogul minefield anymore.

More snow forecast for today and through tomorrow, before some sunny days, and then another storm front likely mid next week.

Snow quality here in Furano at the moment is as good as it has been all season.

Weather conditions: Snowing (3cm per hour)
New snowfall: --

Ludicrous amounts of snow all over Myoko. Somebody dig me out! Seki Onsen is recording 450 centimeters and piling! In the village, snow plows cannot keep up with the rate of fall, and innkeepers are frantic to try and clear their car parks for the weekend. Yes, it's a madhouse at the volcano this week, folks.

The pick of the day is a mountain called Myoko, and anywhere you go there today is a paradise of powder. Watch for avalanches but enjoy; the freeriding has never been better at Seki.

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 15th February 2008, 12:30pm
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was about 20-25cm of snow on the car this morning as it continues to fall. It has been snowing all morning as well and shows no sign of stopping yet. The winds have died down a fair bit though since yesterday, meaning that today both Kagura and Gala Yuzawa open again and the lucky people making their way up there will surely be enjoying some fantastic powder conditions.

It's not too cold today, with the temperature currently around -1 degrees.

It is looking like the snow will continue into tomorrow as well with snow forecast for the full day and a chance it might even be snowing still on Sunday.

We'll update this page later on today with the latest...

PM update:

I was just looking through the reports from last year and as the snow depths have gradually been increasing this last week I thought it would be interesting to see how they compare with this time last season.

Here's the numbers from 4 resorts in the area:

This season (Feb 15th 08):
320cm at Kagura
230cm at Gala Yuzawa
280cm at Iwappara
290cm at Kandatsu

Last season (Feb 15th 07):
220cm at Kagura
150cm at Gala Yuzawa
100cm at Iwappara
120cm at Kandatsu

As you can see, especially in the town resorts there is a big difference. Last year the numbers were worryingly low and some resorts were struggling in the second half of February. Happily no such problems this season.

This season we are certainly not getting record breaking numbers and until now we might not have experienced many of the huge overnight dumps of snow that we might expect in the area, but we are definitely doing much better than last year and conditions right now with all this new snow are really good.

Let's hope it continues!   Read more ...
