Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 15th November 2011, 8:31am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good news this morning. It was a cold night and this morning the area is covered in a blanket of white. Very cold too - into the minus numbers. There's just a slight covering of snow really and perhaps a cm or so here and there on cars, but good to see the general whiteness of it all this morning.

It should stay cold today and also tomorrow but clearer conditions are forecast for tomorrow before temperatures rise again around Friday and Saturday.... more snow around Sunday?

Ski lifts are all on standby, we just need the snow now!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Weather conditions: Cloud, rain/light snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We are just over a week away from the planned opening of Kagura.

Up until this morning the slopes were still looking bare up there, save the occasional frosting, but this morning the cams are showing snow down to the lowest point yet up at Kagura and Tashiro.... the top of Naeba will also have got a covering though right now the mountain is covered in cloud.

I must point out that it's nothing major - in the range of a few cm or so I would say up top, but great to see all that white.

Down to around 3 degrees this morning in the village and into the negatives up top, so you would definitely call it cold. No more short sleeves in these parts I'd say.

Will keep you updated over the coming week as we approach the 23rd.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 15th November 2011, 10:38am
Weather conditions: Light rain, snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning we see snow down to lower than 1400m on the upper slopes of Nozawa. Up top it doesn't look like there's enough for a perfect smooth blanket but perhaps a few cm and the trees are all looking good and frosted up there.

While some light snow may continue on and off up on the top of the mountain today, it's light rain down in the village and a temperature of around 5 degrees at the moment. There's a decent chance that we will see the sun from tomorrow and up until the weekend when it looks like rain both up top and down below on Saturday and a good chance of some snow high up later on Sunday.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
'Getting cooler next week' we said in the last report and, yes, it certainly has.

This morning it's around 5 degrees or so and definitely a chill in the air and as the cloudy clear up a bit we can see that some more snow has appeared on the mountain tops. Perhaps down to around 1,100m or so.

Down in the village it's just cloudy really at the moment but there's a good chance that we will see some rain later on - perhaps a few more sprinklings of snow on the mountains again.

Looking ahead a bit more it should get warmer Thursday and Friday, some heavy rain perhaps on Saturday and then looking pretty good for snowfall later Sunday into early next week.

Happo is saying that this coming Saturday 19th is their planned opening date for this season, but unless there's some huge changes in the weather patterns in the next few days that is looking very unlikely!

But... what that mean though is that the ski resorts are ready and waiting and on standby for the snow to arrive. As are we all!   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 15th November 2011, 14:05pm
Weather conditions: -
New snowfall: 3cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Furano has woken up to more fresh snow. There has been 3cm accumulation on the ground around the village as of 9am. The ambient temperatures are starting to fall, and although it is not quite cold enough yet to start snow making, the time is not too far away. Furano Ski Area has a tentative opening date of 19 November which is dependent on sufficient snow.

At the moment the ski area has really only been dusted in snow, so it is likely the opening on the 19th will be delayed.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 15th November 2011, 14:53pm
Weather conditions: Snowy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's on!

Niseko awoke this morning to see the landscape transformed into winter mode. Around 10 cm of snow fell last night with a further 10 cm or so falling through the day. As of 2pm there is no sign of it letting up and the forecast for the next 2 days is for more of the same.

Temperatures will rise over the weekend but if it keeps up at this rate the chances are good that there should be enough of a base to avoid a complete loss to thawing. Everything looks very optimistic that lifts will open as scheduled and we wont have a repeat of last years very late start to the season.    Read more ...
