Furano Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 9:21am
Weather conditions: Blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The weather conditions could not be more favourable for a great day out on the slopes with sun and blues skies. Of course these clear sky conditions have a trade off,and that trade offis cold temperatures - currently -11deg at the base. There was an accumulation of 4cm of snow through the day yesterday so expect a light dusting of fresh snow on the slopes this morning.

From today the upper Spies Course and Prince Course have been opened up, as has the Prince Romance Lift which is the begginners chair immediately infront of the New Furano Prince Hotel. A groomer was spied going down the front face of Kitanomine this morning. That is the first time this season.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Cloud, clearing up, some blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well this morning we awoke to a decidedly white Yuzawa. The snow managed to fall right down into town area overnight and although there isn't a huge amount - perhaps up to 5cm or so in places - it's great to see it white and feeling like winter.

Right now it is 2 degrees and just cloudy. It's actually quite bright and so things may well be clearing up a bit.

It's considerably colder up at Kagura with the resort reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow and a temperature of -8 degrees a little earlier this morning. With the gradual increase in snow up there they are trying to open up more and more of the resort. Today will see the Giant course open for the first time this season, so they have the Main Gelende, Giant Course, Panorama Course and Gondola Course open being services by the Gondola, the No1 quad and the No1 pair lift.

Over at Tashiro they have the No1 and No2 pair lifts moving as well as the No1 quad lift. Courses open at Tashiro are the Rakuraku course, Tashiro ladies course (though gents are welcome too!), No1 quad connecting course, Skyline course and Tashiro Arieska course.

Naeba operations remain the same, but they will surely be opening more up if and when they can.

Gala Yuzawa still has the 'mat' course open, but there is reportedly about 10cm of fresh snow on top.

As I write this some blue skies have appeared. We may get a small amount of snow again overnight tonight but tomorrow looks set to be a clear day with generally fine weather over the weekend lined up at the moment as well... so no big snow storm on the short term horizon just at the moment.   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 9:49am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning I bring the news we have all been waiting for.... Zao is open at last!

With about 10cm or so of fresh snow again overnight, they have deemed that enough to open up parts of the resort.

Parts of the Chuo and Utopia course areas of the resort are now open, with two pair lifts in Chuo and one pair lift in Utopia operating.

It's a cold morning but right now just cloudy and even clearing up. It looks like we might be in for a few days where we get a sprinkling of snow overnight and then clear days into next week. No huge snowstorm lined up just yet I'm afraid so it looks like it is going to be a slow and gradual start to the season.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 9:59am
Weather conditions: Cloud, clearing up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another 5-10cm of snow reported by Kagura this morning and 5cm or so in the village. It's a cold one too, -3 in the village and -8 up high early on this morning, though things do seem to be clearing up a bit and there is some patches of blue sky on show now.

As mentioned in the Yuzawa Now report this morning, Kagura is trying to open up more of the resort as we get a bit of new snow here and there. Today the Giant course is open for the first time this season meaning that the following runs are open:

- the Main Gelende;
- Giant Course;
- Panorama Course;
- Gondola Course.

A bus is still taking people from the top of Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Gondola, so Mitsumata area is not yet open.

At Tashiro the the No1 and No2 pair are lifts moving as well as the No1 quad lift. Courses open at Tashiro:

- Rakuraku course;
- Tashiro ladies course;
- No1 quad connecting course;
- Skyline course;
- Tashiro Arieska course.

Naeba operations remain the same, but they will surely be opening more up if and when they can.

Next snow? Perhaps tonight but nothing major. And then the night after, but again nothing major. Coming in dribs and drabs, but snow is always much more exciting than that sounds!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 10:04am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Though lower runs aren't skiable yet Hakuba is starting to whiten out and temps are getting cold enough to freeze the handbrakes of anyone not used to leaving them off at night and freeze car locks and doors shut and it didn't take long to forget the hammering rain we had two nights ago.

The base on higher runs is beginning to thicken out and with Goryu reporting 60 cms on Alps Daira and temperatures of -6 degrees precipitation at altitude is coming down as nice powder - all we need now is temperatures to stay low when the next storm comes through.

Possible snow tonight and tomorrow night hopefully bringing enough to pack out lower runs. Operations on all mountains are limited, Happo is opening today with 2 lifts set to be running by lunchtime. Current forecast is for warming next week; it's gonna take a decent storm to really kick things off here but at least there is a choice of lifts running and enough snow to get legs stretched out and season warm-up runs in effect.

Official snow depths and operations @ 16th December AM:

Hakuba Goryu:
Goryu reporting up to 20cm of new snow overnight up top.
Alps no daira - 60cm;

Gondola and Alps No 1 and No 3 pair lifts are operating.

Hakuba 47:
Snow depth (upper) - 33cm;
Route 8 (upper part) open;
Line E lift operating.

Happo has opened for the season from today. The Gondola, Alpen quad and Kurobishi quad lifts are operating. Courses open are the Usagidaira course and part of Kurobishi.
Usagidaira/Kurobishi - 60cm;
Lower slopes - 5cm

Tsugaike Kogen:
Snow depth - 70cm.

Minakami Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 10:40am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow hasn't come down as low as we were hoping, with no snow in the valley but the good news is that Tenjin has one lift open today. It is not much but at least it is a start. It must be one of the latest opening dates at Tenjin for a long while.

There was a bit more snow overnight totally about 10cm at the top since yesterday and there is a good chance that there will be a bit more tonight. It's overcast at the moment and is feeling cold again which is encouraging.

Now it is wait and see as to whether the other resorts can get open for Saturday.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 10:47am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Not a whole lot of snow to report this morning. It is staying very cold and there was a sprinkling overnight again but nothing that is making much different to the snow depth out there on the slopes. Still waiting for that proper dump to come and kick the whole area into action proper.

Okushiga Kogen seems to have decided to open up a small part of the resort again and now have two pair lifts operating.

Lifts currently operating in the different resort areas of Shiga Kogen:

Sun Valley:
1 lift

1 lift

Ichinose Family:
2 lifts

Ichinose Diamond:
1 lift

2 lifts

1 lifts

3 lifts

Here's what the open resorts are reporting in terms of snow depth:

Sun Valley: 30cm
Takamagahara: 30cm
Ichinose Family: 30cm
Ichinose Diamond: 20cm
Yakebitaiyama: 40cm
Okushiga Kogen: 15cm
Kumanoyu: 20cm
Yokoteyama: 20cm

So as you can see, still pretty thin on the ground there. Come on snow!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 10:56am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snowed off and on throughout the day yesterday and late last night there was a dusting of white covering the village
Nothing heavy though so was no great impact on the base

Still was nice enough conditions up top and by lunch time they had opened up the beginner run again from Yamabiko down to Uenodaira so a good 2 km run to get the legs started.

Pretty cold down in the Village this morning with puddles freezing over and some more snow forecast for tonight so hoping for a decent weekend ahead.

The opening ceremony in on Saturday at Yamabiko this Saturday from 11am with free Sake and Nabe, a good enough reason to make your way up the hill.
Also a free concert at the Hanzan Bunko Museum in town from 7pm.
So should be a good weekend and hope the snow gods are smiling.

Courses open:

Yamabiko courses A
Yamabiko course C
Yamabiko course D
Yamabiko course E
Lifts operating:

Nagasaka Gondola (both sections)
The two Yamabiko quad lifts and Uenodaira 4   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 10:57am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow continued through much of yesterday adding about another 15-20cm since last report. It cleared up though in the evening and has remained mostly fine this morning so far. Some more snow is expected to come through today though.
Many more lifts have opened around the resort and a fair portion of the courses are now able to be skied. Hanazono opened for the first time with skiing on the Hano #3 lift. The Gondola in Hiradu and Niseko Village are now open as well.
The cover on the slopes is pretty good but just off-piste there still plenty of rocks and other obstacles just below the surface so be careful. Some of the off-piste is skiable but there's still a lot of sasa sticking through.
Overall not too bad for this time of year. It won't take much more snow to get the last remianing lifts operating. At this stage quite a bit more snow is expected on Friday.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Thursday 16th December 2010, 21:34pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy over Myoko, mixed skies for most of the day, snow toward evening.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I waited through the day to report; probably 15cm fell overnight, much less than expected. The day started out with some blue sky off to the north and south, in fact, although the clouds stayed over Mt. Myoko.

It started to snow again in the early evening — even looked promising for a little while — but basically nothing of note.

The resorts are unlikely to open in full on the 18th, but the word is that the top lift on Akakura Kanko at least will be running Saturday. There should be more news tomorrow, which I'll get out earlier in the day (regardless of snowfall)

Lift operations:

Scheduled opening December 18   Read more ...
