Minakami Now!

Friday 16th February 2007, 8:05am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blizzard conditions in Minakami this morning with an average of 20cm on the ground, but up to 50cm in areas with heavy wind deposits. It looks like the wind is here to stay for the most part of the day but should calm down by later this evening.

It looks like tomorrow will be a mostly sunny day but the wind may still be lingering around in the morning. By the afternoon tomorrow the wind should be all but gone and it is supposed to cloud over. The forecast for Sunday is for precipatation, hopefully of the white fluffy type.

Tomorrow should be great on-piste riding at all fields around Minakami with some nice little stashed of powder in sheltered areas. Caution is advised in the backcountry. The formation of a thick ice crust from recent rain then up to 50cm of wind packed powder on top is a good recipe for some decent avalanches, especially on lee slopes that will have been heavily loaded (South faces).   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Weather conditions: White Sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has snowed again! Stormy conditions since yesterday. We've all been watching with much anticipation as strong winds have lashed the town and thoughts of storm damage descended on us during those strong gusts.

It a whopping -6 in the village, Naeba is not to be seen - it's a white-out out there... to early for Kagura to open yet as the wind is still quite gusty - it's not ideal jollying around weather, it's a case of tuck in your mufflers, under-jacket powder guards and don the thickest gloves you can find...

It looks like the Gondolas are closed, along with the Dragondola and the top of Kagura.... Tashiro is reporting a late start and are apologising for the 'annoyance'.

Beautiful weather forecast for tomorrow... looks like the weekend customers are set for a great time considering that all that powder might be saved for the weekend.

Big smiles returning home from the mountains on Sunday night? We thinks so.

Update: Very windy in places - The Naeba slope is acting like a wind tunnel, no covered lifts open, with icy conditions... though there is powder to be found around. Where there is powder it's great! Just be careful of the icy spots.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snow, wind
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Though perhaps not as strong as yesterday, it is still windy out there this morning. The really good news though is that this morning there was 20cm or so of excellent powder snow on the car. With the winds blowing snow around there was probably more come down last night and so the slopes should will be in excellent condition once the winds die down.

Depending on the winds lift operations at resorts might be affected but early on it is looking like most places will be open today.

It is looking like tomorrow will be a fine day and so with the good conditions this weekend is going to be a great time to be here...   Read more ...

They said 25-50cm, so how much did we get?

Well, Iwappara are reporting about 25cm of fresh snow in the middle part of the resort this morning and there was about 15cm of snow on the top of my car. The snow is still coming down now and so we can hope for more but the forecast is saying "cloud" for the second half of the day.

There are still some fairly gusty winds about this morning but Gala have opened for the day. Kagura are waiting on the Number 1 quad lift early on, but hope to open it up if the winds die down, and are waiting to open up the Tashiro area of the resort.

Tomorrow is still looking likely to be good weather and so with the new snow conditions for the weekend should be good.

Well, the snow has continued falling for most of the day - but curiously not really much piling up here at town level but it will surely mean that there is some more cms of fresh snow on the hills though. It is looking like it is clearing up at the moment with just very light snow falling currently.

Apparently Kagura was not fully open today with the top lift and a few others being affected by the wind but Gala managed to open and has announced that it plans to be open tomorrow as well which is good news.

It is still looking likely that tomorrow will be a fine day and the wind shouldn't be causing the problems it has been the last few days as well - so hopefully resorts will be opening up all the normal lifts.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday it didn't snow very much, maybe a couple of cm's on the mountain. The winds were pretty strong for much of the day but by 4.30pm the King 3 lift here at Hirafu opened for night riding.

Overnight there has been 5-10cms in the village and 10+cms on the mountain. The wind is still a bit gusty but is expected to ease as the day goes on. Some of the upper lifts may not be running first thing this morning. Snowfall is expected this morning easing to showers this afternoon and easing again this evening. Visibility will be poor on the mountain for most of the day.

There may be the light snow shower overnight however tomorrow should see light winds and good visibility. We may even get some sun at some stage.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Overcast, snow showers..
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The winds picked up a bit again last night but have died down this morning so all lifts should be open as usual. There was just a couple of centimetres of snow over the last 24 hours. Conditions on the mountain were pretty unusual yesterday after the strong winds; most areas had nice deep powder but every now and then you would hit an icy section or a snow drift that would take you by surprise! There were quite a few branches fallen off the trees up high so there must have been some pretty strong gusts up there. I don't think the winds were quite as strong last night but watch out for those icy sections.
The forecast is giving snow showers later this morning, overcast in the afternoon and then clear tonight.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 16th February 2007, 9:19am
Weather conditions: Broken cloud cover, nil precipitation.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The wind was gusting to strong this morning in the upper Hira Kawa valley. Snow plumes were prominently visible on all the upper ridge crests in sight. The clouds over the Hakuba Sanzan were down to 1,800 m a.s.l. so the upper winds can only be imagined. Yesterday above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain the wind at ridge top occasionally sounded like a not too distant jet taking off. There was some 30 cm of moderately dense new snow at 1,900 m a.s.l. yesterday around noon.

Just now we have a first hand report from the Happo One Lift Company terrain that above tree line the winds are strong from the north-west with intense snow transport. The upper lifts at Happo One are still closed from Yusagi Daira up (top of the gondola) because of high winds. But winds are forecast to moderate soon.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds (more than 50% cloud cover)
Temperature: Present: -3.5 C
Maximum: -3.5 C
Minimum: -4.0 C
Wind at surface: Light and variable, occasionally gusting moderate from north-west.
Winds aloft: Moderate from north-west
Precipitation: Snowing -1 cm per hour accumulation
Barometer and trend: 917 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 18 cm {wind effect in study plot}
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 88 cm
Foot penetration: 50 cm
Surface: New snow, fragements and rimed, 1.0mm (riming of crystals usually indicates turbulent air aloft)
Density of surface snow: 90 kg per cubic metre
Crust: not measured (below new snow)
Cloud ceiling:

Above tree line: High

Tree line: High

Below tree line: Moderate

N.B. We have a first hand report of high to extreme winds from the north-west in the alpine. The daily warming could reduce the hazard at tree line.

Travel Advisory:
A trained observer on the Happo One Lift Company terrain reports no sign of avalanche activity visible anywhere. There seems to be about 25 cm of storm snow (HST 25 cm). the strong winds have broken up the crystals and so the density is a tad high but nothing to complain about. Yesterday above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain the trail-breaking was not too difficult (ski penetration of mostly 20 cm) as there is a carrying crust under the storm snow. Yesterday at about noon at 1,700 m a.s.l. there was a shear down 20 cm (Compression Test Easy: 6 taps, sudden planar).

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 16th February 2007, 10:38am
Weather conditions: light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
An awesome day on the mountain this morning after at least 35cm fell yesterday and last night! The snow is still falling and it is set to be an epic day, especially up on Yamabiko. There were many happy faces lining up for first runs this morning. The winds have returned to more comfortable levels and are currently around 25km/h. The temperatures on the mountain are at present -8C at Yamabiko and Uenotaira and in the village -1C or -2C. The revised base depths are 210cm on Yamabiko, 140cm at Uenotaira and between 30 and 60cm on the lower areas of the resort and village.

The outlook is for light snow to fall most of today with Saturday set to be mostly clear. On Sunday the weather will set in again and light snow will fall all day.
