Nozawa Onsen Now!
Saturday 16th February 2019, 7:33am
Good morning from Nozawa.
After a clearer day yesterday - though not totally so - (and some really nice snow conditions), it's cloudy skies this morning.
It's not as cold as it has been and some light wet snow/sleet falling early on, snow being reported higher up along with a few cm of snow up there. Doesn't look like it should be warming up during the day, hopefully remaining close to 0C (just above that now).
Visibility looks very poor at the start of the day on the Yamabiko and Uenotaira areas, it's ok lower down close to base. Light snow due through until early tomorrow morning maybe, with a chance of some sun later on in the day tomorrow.
Start of what will be another busy weekend!

Geto Kogen Now!
Saturday 16th February 2019, 7:44am
Good morning from Geto Kogen.
Cloudy yesterday morning and clearer conditions in the afternoon. With more snow overnight there's 8cm to report this morning.
It is cloudy again this morning and there's a fairly strong wind but hopefully the resort will be able to open as planned.
Official snow depths:
* Top: 430cm * Base: 300cm
Planned operating lifts - subject to change due to weather:
* Number 1 Gondola * Number 2 Gondola * Number 1 pair lift * Number 2 pair lift * Quad
- The Number 2 Gondola is usually rested on normal weekdays
Courses & Tree Runs - subject to change due to weather:
* All of the main official courses are available * All tree runs open
Just after I posted the report yesterday, it got rather cloudy. And then it started clearing up again by mid morning and it ended up being a fine day, though never totally clear. As I was driving down route 17 in mid afternoon the temperature panel said +3C.
I had a really good few hours yesterday morning; the snow was in really good condition.
This morning it is cloudy and I can't see much of the mountains and there's some light snow falling and a slight dusting on the top of the car; a few cm in places. It is noticeably not as cold this morning as it has been in recent mornings, though if the forecasts are correct the temp shouldn't be rising much during the day. (Early in the coming week, we can expect warmer conditions...)
Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm of fresh snow with Kagura reporting 1cm. The latter are also saying that they expect some stronger winds later on.
So, light snow forecast for the day into tomorrow morning.
Have a good Saturday.

Good morning from Zao.
After some clearer weather yesterday, it isn't quite as cold this morning and there are signs of a milder period in the middle of the coming week. Which makes any snow we get today and tomorrow more important... so come on!!
Limited visibility early on particularly in higher elevations.
Just two more weekends left in February - why does winter fly by so quickly - so we're expecting another busy one. Things usually tend to drop off when we get into March.
So again, we can expect a modest amount of snow on the slopes with light snow falling this morning and just a dusting on lower base areas.
Looks like there's some very limited visibility early on. Take care out there.

Cloudy, bit of blue sky
Good morning Niseko fans.
This morning I have measured 6cm to be added to my reports.
There's not much of a wind, earlier light snow has eased off, there is some blue sky to be seen between the clouds. And visibility is pretty good. Oh yes, it's not quite as cold as it has been over the last week or so.
Everywhere should be open as planned this morning.
The forecasts are showing less snow on the horizon over the coming week along with some upcoming milder conditions. Perhaps that is inevitable as we are closer to the end of February than the beginning but... I will resist! (Yeah, I know, that doesn't mean much. Just want to point out that I'm not yet ready to think about potential early signs of spring. See my report archives to see how much snow we usually get in late February and March).
Well, that's about it for this morning. I hope you have a good Saturday.
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain base 6am: -6℃, 10cm snowfall in 24h. Moiwa800m: -6.5℃, NW4.5m/s, development of cornices/snowdrifts have settled. Annupuri1120m: 250cm snow depth, 1100, -8.9℃, calm, 15cm snowfall. Hirafu peak: calm, -12℃. Mizuno no sawa: -7.85℃, 4cm snowfall in 24h, 177cm snow depth, NW6.4-9.6m/s. Weather Station Suttsu: -0.9℃, NNW5.2-9.1m/s, Kutchan: -6℃, S0.9m/s, 188cm snow depth. Benkei cape: NNE9m/s, Kamui cape: NNW6m/s, 1008hPa, 1.2m waves.
Calm morning as a small low-pressure center is sitting right above the area. The cronices/snowdrifts development has settled and the general avalanche risk is low. Foggy conditions above 1000m elevation. All gates are scheduled to open. Listen to the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of the gates. The wind is forecasted to pick up as the low-pressure moves east. Beware of sudden weather changes.
Avalanche forecast in Niseko emphasizes on the developments of wind-slabs. Drastically developing slabs (snowdrifts) are very unstable and easily triggers a surface slab slide with riding stimulations or falling cornices. Although cornices might look stable, they can collapse anytime and potentially initiate a slide depending on the slope stability underneath it. Cornice drops aren't a good idea.
The snow is still good today. Stay away from valley bottoms and do not traverse across knolls and slopes under cornices.
Have a great day.

The cloudy and limited visibility conditions are back this morning with snow falling again and just a dusting so far. Not sure we can expect much in terms of cm, but I would be happy to be surprised come tomorrow...
It does not feel as cold this morning and there are signs that in the coming week we are going to be experiencing slightly warmer conditions. (I'm hoping 'slightly').

Good morning from Naeba.
Light snow since last night and 2cm of snow on the ground. So nothing major but light snow is forecast for the day. And then we have some fireworks once nighta is finished.
The forecast seems to be showing us milder weather in the coming week with more snow than sun. (It does actually feel a bit milder today, though still fairly cold).
Fancy getting up the hill in a Subaru car? Today and tomorrow there is the "Subaru Gelende Taxi" service happening here in Naeba, from 2pm. Interesting! You won't be able to miss it on the lower base area of the resort and if you can get in there it's free.
Official snow depth:
All lifts plan to be operating apart from the following (some lifts rested on weekdays):
- Daishamen romance pair lift
All courses now open apart from the following:

Appi Kogen Now!
Saturday 16th February 2019, 10:36am
Hello from Appi,
On again off again sunshine this morning with the winds picking up since daybreak. Light snowfall most of the day with warmer than usual temperatures. Sunday looks fairly similar with Monday bringing sunny skies and a warming spell heading our way on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The winds should die down on Sunday night giving us good conditions for a day out on the mountain Monday and Tuesday. We may see another few cm of snow during the week and maybe, just maybe, a few cm of rain.
There’s still a good base up on the mountain and the fresh snow will certainly help those heading out early before it gets chopped up from the weekend crowds.
Planned lift operations & course areas (subject to change due to weather conditions):
- Appi Gondola - Central Quad lift - Central Number 2 - Central Number 3A - Central Number 4 - Central Number 5 - Central Number 6 - Sailer quad - Sailer Number 2 - Vista quad - Nishimori
* All 5 tree run areas should be open as normal when the lift operations allow - register to use them at Plaza 1st Floor
Official groomed snow depth (as reported by resort):
No new snow down low until it started falling heavily around 6am.
Up top at Tenjin they had 10cm by 8am and it's pretty likely it's really piling up as snow fall at the base is moderate to heavy.
It's snowing lightly in the village now too.
Forecast is for snow showers at Tenjindaira through tomorrow night. The way things are going it could be lots of weekend snow. Read more ...
Saturday 16th February 2019, 14:17pm
There was 3cm of new snow at base this morning and around 10cm higher up on the mountain. The day started at -9c but quickly rose up to -3c around midday. The weather has been clear but the upper half of the mountain was shrouded in passing cloud during the morning, but afternoon has been better at the top. With the sun quite strong, sloping roofs have self shed and the footpaths have been sunbaked and are quite slippery.
