Hakuba Now!

Sunday 17th December 2006, 8:40am
Weather conditions: Low cloudy and rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Reports of fresh might be coming in by people heading up this AM. It is currently drizzling lightly in Hakuba and the temperature at the base is at 4 C. A cold snap would tur this rain into snow and we would all be happier than pigs in you know what. The temperature is supposed to drop this eveing and more snow flurries expected. Still a bit dark and cloudy here today but that means precip is on its way!

Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47, Tsugaike and Happo are all open today with minimal lift operation. Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura, Hakuba Iwatake and Hakuba San Alpina are all on standby and will open when snow conditions allow.

Watch for cornices and loaded lee slopes that were created last week getting heavy with added snow fall and warmer weather. The warmer weather should, however, help to solidify the pack in the alpine and create a good bond with the ground cover.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 17th December 2006, 8:59am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
OK, so it looks like the long-awaited snow might well happen later today. Rain is forecast of around lunchtime and then it looks like that will turn into snow in the evening and - hopefully - continue through until tomorrow night. Fingers crossed it brings us a decent amount of snow.

At the moment it is grey and cloudy and about 4 degrees.

In an interesting article in a local newspaper yesterday, they mentioned that the snowfall at the moment in the Yuzawa area is just 50-60% the amount of snow that we usually get (on average). They also worryingly were forecasting a 'warm winter', but they have been wrong before.... even last year there were forecasts like that and it turned out that we had huge snowfalls.

Here's hoping we'll be bringing good news tomorrow morning...!   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Sunday 17th December 2006, 9:12am
Weather conditions: Mostly clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Very little snow fell after yesterdays report and last night was mostly clear with temperatures dropping to below -10 in Kutchan. This morning is clear once again and there is little chance of any snow today. Snow is still forecast for tomorrow and Tuesday and then returning on Thursday. Normally in Niseko we are sun deprived to say the least, but we happily trade sunshine for deep powder. Although the sun has been nice enough I think most of us are ready for the cloudy and powdery conditions to return.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Sunday 17th December 2006, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow that was predicted for this weekend hasn't arrived yet but its definitely getting colder, down to -15 last night and still around -10 at the bottom of the mountain at 8am this morning.

Its very sunny and clear at the moment, great visibilty giving nice views across the valley to the Taisetsusan mountain range.

The Kitanomine Gondola opened yesterday, it gives access to some of the steeper slopes and some great ungroomed areas so, despite the snow being a little heavy after the spell of warmer weather, yesterday was a great day to be on the mountain.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 17th December 2006, 9:44am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good Morning Some higher level darker clouds above the village today so lets hope they are bearing some of the white fluffy stuff as predicted. Lots of smiles on faces yesterday when people were coming down from the mountain so what is up the top seems to be fun.
Locals are busy preparing thier lodges for the season and saw a lady at the Onsen this morning boiling branches to make decorations for the New Year.
Have a great day    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Light snow at times, fog, cloud
New snowfall: --

It's a cloudy start to things today with some drizzle and wet snow falling at the moment this is being written. If we are to believe the forecasts, that cold front with stengthen as the day progresses and we will hopefully be in for some new snowfall over the next 24 hours. Temperatures right now are not that cold, but are set to drop later on in the day and overnight. I hope to bring you good news tomorrow morning.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 17th December 2006, 12:06pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a cloudy and drizzly morning at Naeba I'm afraid... but... snow is forecast to be with us later this afternoon and into tomorrow. It's around +2 degrees at the moment which is colder than it has been for a while and set to get colder as the day progresses.

There is no change in operations at Naeba or Tashiro. Tashiro is the best pick - not only is the snow better up there but it is less busy than Mitsumata (and the car park is free as well!)

Minakami Now!

Sunday 17th December 2006, 23:12pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy with light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a day of cold temperatures, threatening clouds and light spitting rain, the snow has finally come, albeit rather weak. It is now falling at about 0.5 cm an hour but is likely to increase to around 4cm/hour in the early hours of the morning.

The snow is forecasted to continue through to Monday evening. This should bring at least 10cm of snow to the village level and 20cm + to the ski areas.

Stay tuned for tomorrows report with updates on ski areas opening dates.   Read more ...
