Myoko Now!

Sunday 17th February 2008, 7:08am
Weather conditions: Snowing (3cm per hour)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No end in sight to this, the biggest deluge of snow Myoko's seen in decades. No rest for the weary plowmen today--Akakura's well past 3 meters and Seki Onsen has hit the 5 meter mark. I don't recommend doing Seki, as avalanches could easily snap today. That goes for most steep runs today.

The pick, though, is Akakura Kanko. It's a great run, long, and off-piste riding is fine. It's also nice and long. And today's conditions should be savored:)

Your Myoko area levels for today:
380cm (Akakura Kanko Resort);
395cm (Akakura Onsen);
310cm (Ikenotaira);
450cm on top, 285cm on the bottom (Suginohara);
415cm (Kyukamura);
280cm (Pine Valley);
505cm (Seki Onsen)!!!;
230cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
260cm (Madarao Sympathique);
275cm (Madarao Kogen);
395cm (Myoko Ski Park);
200cm (Togakushi);
220cm (Kurohime);
190cm (Iizuna);
195cm (Iizuna Kogen)

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: moderate winds, blue sky, a little chilly, beautiful clear morning.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Continuous snowfall yesterday has dumped another 6cm in the village with more expected on upper mountain today. The mountain was in top condition yesterday and you just had to be riding the Top Chair to hear all the screams of joy from guests getting their deep power fix.

Today is turning into a beautiful bluebird morning, however snowfall is predicted later in the day. The storm that has been over us for the last week has no finally passed, and so we are expecting a few days of sunshine, and then another storm to hit from Wednesday.

It's time to take out the cameras again for those blue sky photos.

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Clear at the bottom, overcast at the top.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday's powder and light winds made for two epic days of powder riding in a row. Skiing and boarding does not get any better anywhere in the world. It is hard to discribe to people just how special the last two days have been. If a picture says a 1000 words then check out the images below.

This morning in Hirafu, the sun is out after more snow fell last night. It looks to be another epic day but unbeknown to us in the Village, there is a strong wind blowing at the top of the mountain that is causing the top lifts to be shut and the gates to paradise closed. The Patrol is not even sure if the Annapuri gates will open. They state that the wind has created dangerous wind slaps that could slip. No matter what, it will be a great day on the mountain even though it might not be "all time" like the last two days.

It might be interesting to note that the accumulated snow depth is not indicitive with the amount of powder on the mountain. The more snow that falls, the more it compresses causing the level to actually decrease. If the resort's snow depth has only increased by 20cm you can be sure that there is almost half a meter of powder on the mountain. Niseko is having an incredible season with almost no days above freezing and the snow keeps coming. Bring it on!!!!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Weather conditions: Snow

Bloody ludicrous. Thats all I can say about the snow that has fallen since last night. It is very difficult to say how much has fallen in the village with all the shovelling and shifting going on, but I would guess not far short of a metre. The resort is reporting 60cm of new snow all over, and that figure is usually a bit conservative due to grooming. It just went nuts at about 7pm last night and has not stopped. There are piles of snow across the road in a rice paddy that look like someone has been burying whales. I can't wait to get out there and share in all this wonderful powder.

Snow is forecast to continue until tomorrow evening.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --

More snow... it just keeps coming. Right now it is quite bright and actually I can see the lower parts of the mountains, but there was another 40cm of snow on the car to move just before.

Kagura are reporting a whopping 80cm of snow since yesterday, though curiously yet again that is not reflected in the official snow depth for the resort. Kandatsu is now reporting 370cm of snow. We weren't doing too bad before but this last week really has pushed up those numbers and it looks like it hasn't quite yet stopped.

Snow is forecast all today and into up until tomorrow evening. Winds aren't that strong and so shouldn't be affecting resort operation but the resorts working with all this new snow might make some lifts slow early on.

It is currently -3 degrees   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --

Kagura is reporting 80cm of fresh new powder since yesterday! In surely the heaviest snowfall of the season up there - and some very cold temperatures (-13C) - conditions up there will be incredible right now. It is still snowing today and so visibility is poor, but if you don't mind that....

Naeba hasn't got as much as it took longer for the snow to fall here yesterday and even now visibility isn't too bad on the bottom half of the mountain.

All of the lifts should be moving for the day and it looks like it is set to be snowing for the most part of the day so get well wrapped up and enjoy the current conditions.

The snow is expected to continue into tomorrow.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: snowing and cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Continued snow throughout the day made for epic powder conditions on the hill today.
Upwards of 30-40 cm of new on top of the resorts today and about 5-6 cm in the valley.

Consistent flurries expected overnight and tomorrow with cold temperatures prevailing all day. Cold, dry and fresh ....all of which are more than welcome! Get out and enjoy it!

Avalanche Danger Scale and Advisory:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Tree Line: Considerable

Alpine: High

High amounts of steady wind and snow on Saturday night has increased the likelyhood of natural and skier triggered avalanches. Wind transport of snow (cornices and snow drifts) is present and frequent in both south and north faces. Sluffing on steeper terrain is still a possibility so avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths. North facing slopes that were not overly wind loaded were stable at lower slope angles, but on slopes above 40 degrees one could expect sluffing and slides on areas of tesnion (convexing rollers etc.)   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 17th February 2008, 19:34pm
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow soon came back and overnight and this morning heavy snow and blowing winds in all areas of Shiga Kogen. This affected resort operations as everyone tries to cope with the huge amount of snow that we keep on getting this last week. There was over 25-30cm or so of snow to move this morning and probably easily another 15-20cm this evening.

Heavy snow is also falling down at the bottom of the mountains in the Iiyama region causing a few traffic problems. Traffic is moving slow right now and much care is needed as at times visibility is almost zero.

Those snow depths are growing quick, though the official numbers don't seem to be reflection the amounts we are actually getting. No worries, the snow we have is top quality and once the conditions calm down a bit there will be some top-notch skiing and snowboarding on offer here.

Temperatures remain low and mid-winter like, with temperatures below -10 across the board.   Read more ...
