Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 18th April 2007, 8:44am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has turned cold again in the village, and cloud cover over the mountain remains with a glimse of sunshine. There has been a lot of rain fall over the past 48 hours but none of which turned to new snow due to the above zero tempratures even at the summit. This has resulted in a significently reduced base level and I would imagine icy conditions early on up at Yamabiko which is the only area open.   Read more ...

Up at Naeba, lifts operating are the Dragondola, Number 2 Gondola and Quad Number 5 lifts.

Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday we had light snow falling on and off for parts of the day and it was quite a cold one as well. This morning it is cloudy and some areas still have a sprinkling of of that fresh snow on the ground. It is another cold morning as well and still only -1 on the thermometer outside, so conditions on the slopes that remain open are fairly decent at the moment.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a cloudy morning in the region, and thankfully no rain to report after a fair bit falling yesterday. Visibility higher up early on looks fairly poor, hopefully the clouds will move on as the day progresses. There is a chance of rain being with us later on in the day though as well as overnight. A high of 6 degrees is forecast for today.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is another beautifully clear morning here, there was some high cloud making things a bit overcast earlier but it has all cleared away and the sun is feeling pretty warm already.

The snow has been rapidly melting over the last few days and there are some big full depth cracks opening up on the steeper sections of the mountain. The maximum temperature for today will be 10 degrees and the forecast is predicting the temperatures to rise over the next week.

It is getting noticeably warmer by the day here at the moment, yesterdays top temperature was 11 degrees and it looks like it will be another warm one today. There are no clouds and the air is crystal clear today giving magnificent views of the mountains. This clear weather is set to last until friday when it will become overcast. It looks like the rain will return on saturday - just in time for the week end!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 18th April 2007, 11:59am
Weather conditions: Cloudy with high cloud ceiling
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Weather in Hakuba now is cloudy with some clear patches opening up to the east. Much better visibility than yesterday and upper hills are not in the clouds. Maybe Tsugaike is in the clouds but Happo and 47 are clear. Only skiing on the upper portions of the hill, and the conditions are spring slush/ ice crust and some new snow over the past few days. All the hills will have downloading on the gondolas and this is recommended if you want to save your bases and don't like to walk. Wind is light from the south today and the forecast calls for light snow atop the higher peaks.

( See Backcountry Advisory Below )

Avalanche Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

Backcountry Travel Advisory:
A fairly good day for off-piste action but not great visibilty and light out there today.
A shallow snowpack over bushes, rock outcroppings and bamboo (sasa) will be more likely to slide. Also take care in convex areas as there may be glide cracks formed and big holes in the snow. Wet, moisture laden snow will be more likely to slide on steep faces and this may also loose rocks/debris onto unwary travellers, so be careful under steep rock faces and cliffs.   Read more ...
