Yuzawa Now!

Monday 18th February 2008, 8:53am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow did continue through yesterday and come evening there was another 20cm or so of snow to shovel away. There was also a lot of traffic on Route 17 in the evening trying to make it's way back to the IC and a bit of congestion for a while.

This morning the snow is still coming down. Right now just light snow falling and it is fairly bright and the mountains around town are visible. It is about -3 degrees at the moment and once again will likely remain below zero.

Down at town level there isn't much of a wind but Kagura are reporting stronger winds and at the time of writing whether Tashiro and the top quad at Kagura will be open today is questionable.

GALA Yuzawa is open as normal today.

The forecast has us down for snow throughout the day, with the snow clouds clearing up by tomorrow morning and cloud forecast.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 18th February 2008, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The madness has abated and it is not snowing in Nozawa at the moment. Looking up at the run next to the ski jump I can see yesterdays tracks almost filled by the snow which fell fast and furious after the resort closed last night, and its a safe bet that today will see the 6th day in a row of knee deep powder.

The forecast is for a little more snow this afternoon then a fine day tomorrow. We are expecting snow showers throughout the week and then another big dump on Friday night. Snow level details to be updated later. Cracked 4m at 1pm yesterday!   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Monday 18th February 2008, 9:41am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing at 2cm/hour
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the snow fell for most of the day bringing another 30 cm to the valley.

This morning there is another 10cm of fresh at the valley level with the snow slowly falling at 2cm/hour. The total amount of snow brought by this storm (HST) is now 1.9m at the valley level and up to 2.8m above 1300m.

The remainder of today looks like a mostly snow wit it expected to cease around early evening. Tomorrow should be a mostly cloudy day with temperatures slowly increasing.

Backcountry Advisory
The very large deposits of fresh snow will be putting stress on the weak layers from early last week. Travel in or under steep alpine terrain is not advised. In many places the snow will be too deep to ride on low angle terrain and high angle terrain should be avoided until the new snow settles.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable
Tree Line: Considerable
Below Tree line: Moderate   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 18th February 2008, 10:00am
Weather conditions: Sunny and clear, upper peaks in the clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blue Bird today in Hakuba! Clear skies and sun prevail over the valley today with the high peaks of Hakuba still in the clouds. Trace amounts of snow overnight in the lower valley and about 2cm up on top. Expect a little warming up on exposed south facing slopes so wear sunglasses and sunscreen out there today. Clouds are expected to roll in this afternoon with clouds as well on the forecast for tomorrow.

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Tree Line: Considerable

Alpine: High

Backcountry Travel Advisory as at Feb 17th:

High amounts of steady wind and snow on Saturday night has increased the likelyhood of natural and skier triggered avalanches. Wind transport of snow (cornices and snow drifts) is present and frequent in both south and north faces. Sluffing on steeper terrain is still a possibility so avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths. North facing slopes that were not overly wind loaded were stable at lower slope angles, but on slopes above 40 degrees one could expect sluffing and slides on areas of tesnion (convexing rollers etc.)   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 18th February 2008, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow continued last night but early this morning things look like they might be clearing up with some blue sky in places as well as a fair amount of cloud hanging on. There is a chance of snow later on in the day, but that might just miss us altogether. For now though conditions out on the slopes could not really be better. The last week has brought some real deep powder to the area and the lucky people out there won't have experienced much better.

Snow depths in many resort areas are now well over 2 meters.

Not much of a wind this morning and temperatures remain down there under -10 for the most part. Mid-winter continues!   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 18th February 2008, 11:26am
Weather conditions: Clear, fine blue skies. Deteriorating later.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's buebird today in Niseko. The sky is saphire blue and there is no wind down in the village, although there may be some wind up around the peak. It's going to be fantastic across the whole mountain today for all kinds of riding. No question about it.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Monday 18th February 2008, 12:53pm
Weather conditions: warm day, overcast with breaks of sunshine.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow overnight and a nice morning this morning. Early clear skies have turned into an overcast day, with temperatures expected to approach 0 degrees.

The snow at the village level has turned to light corn, and I have heard a few birds chirping which could be a sign that spring is coming early this year.

Sunshine is forecast for the next few days, then another storm set to bring significant snowfall late Friday and through Saturday.

Don’t forget the other resorts in the area to check out are Kamui, Tomamu and Asahidake. Today Asahidake is on wind hold, but anecdotal reports say waist to chest deep snow yesterday. With all the snow in the last week, don’t forget that Asahidake is an avalanche prone area and you need to take appropriate care.

Naeba Now!

Monday 18th February 2008, 12:56pm
Weather conditions: Sunny with a grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful sunny day today. Another good dump of snow since the last report - About 50cm came down yesterday afternoon/evening. The wind raged all day yesterday too and didn't let rest until about 2am last night. So with this recent snowfall there should be a lot of missing trees and wider bays and bowls of powder to glide through.   Read more ...
