Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 19th February 2008, 8:24am
Weather conditions: Bluebird
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a stunner with some high cloud hanging around the peaks but blue skies for the first time and powder still to be found. Cloud was hanging low still last night but had dissipated by this morning.

Another bluebird day today with -7 degree temperatures in the valley and the peaks out in force. Good to get some nice views for the first time in a week. University tour busses have rolled into town so expect a lot erratic skiers and watch for obstacles in the form of snowboarders sitting/sprawling in random places but otherwise groomers will be sweet...

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Below Tree Line: Low

Tree Line: Moderate

Alpine: Considerable

Backcountry Travel Advisory as at Feb 17th:

High amounts of steady wind and snow on Saturday night has increased the likelyhood of natural and skier triggered avalanches. Wind transport of snow (cornices and snow drifts) is present and frequent in both south and north faces. Sluffing on steeper terrain is still a possibility so avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths. North facing slopes that were not overly wind loaded were stable at lower slope angles, but on slopes above 40 degrees one could expect sluffing and slides on areas of tension (convexing rollers etc.)   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 19th February 2008, 8:38am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow on and off for most of yesterday, but not the kind that dumped lots of cm on the ground... more light snow for the most part, especially at town level.

Cloud is on the forecast for the day and cloudy it is early on. It looks like it may turn into a fine day with some a bit of blue sky around just before (which has now clouded over) but it is quite bright and there is definitely a chance of a fine day. Whichever way it goes though, it looks unlikely that we will see snow today.

Temperatures just under zero at the moment and it might actually rise above that mark later on in the day for the first time in quite a while.

Right now, the forecast for tomorrow is sun in the daytime followed by snow in the evening. Sounds good to me!   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 19th February 2008, 8:39am
Weather conditions: Clear, fine blue skies.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a beautiful day skiing with sunny skies for most of the day. Clouds and a bit of snow fell in the afternoon. There was a lot of powder off piste but not as deep as the previous few days where we were really spoiled. Today looks much the same. It is sunny in the Village with a couple centimeters of fresh on the ground. Looking up the hill, it is clear that the groomers have been hard at work. There will be excellent skiing on the groomed. One will have to look hard for untracked today.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 19th February 2008, 9:05am
Weather conditions: Clear sky and sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful blue sky covers the valley this morning, the first blue sky after 6 days of continuous snow!

The forecast is for the clouds to roll in mid morning then remain cloudy throughout the day. Tomorrow the sun is expected to shine for the entire day, with more snow forecast for Thursday and the entire weekend.

Backcountry Advisory
The very large deposits of fresh snow will be putting stress on the weak layers from early last week. Travel in or under steep alpine terrain is not advised. In many places the snow will be too deep to ride on low angle terrain and high angle terrain should be avoided until the new snow settles.

Alpine: Considerable

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 19th February 2008, 9:51am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A mixed bag early this morning with cloud hanging on in places but in more places there are blue skies showing through. But it looks like it will be a fine day on the whole here. It is slightly less cold in general but still cold out there, but with the fine weather and almost no wind conditions out on the slopes are top class.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 19th February 2008, 10:22am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a clear and cold day in Nozawa today. It was very warm yesterday on the lower slopes, so it is probably going to be a bit icy today. If we have learnt anything from this last big dump, it is that we are lucky to have so much snow in Nozawa because it really doesn't stay fresh for very long here. It got very heavy yesterday and the huge dump had only just finished. Anyway, that magical 6 days gave us some great powder, gave snow levels an amazing boost and the resort looks like a totally different place with so much snow everywhere.

Villagers can only expect a short respite as it is meant to dump again tomorrow night and then on Friday. Today also sees the start of the Japan ski champs.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 19th February 2008, 11:09am
Weather conditions: warm day, overcast with breaks of sunshine.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
What a beautiful day it is today. Blue skies, temperature is sitting around 0 degrees, there are birds out again and I have heard on the grapevine that there are bear tracks out on the mountains again....

A dusting of snow overnight. The snow pack is starting to corn up a little and what use to be light and fluffy is a little hard packed, if not almost sandy. It has been a very quick change in snow conditions from last week, when the snow was as good as I can remember powder snow being here in Furano, to the spring conditions the mountain is now experiencing.

Don’t forget the sunscreen today!
