Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A classic spring day outside this morning. Beautiful clear skies, light winds and a forecast with more of the same through the next few days. The snow on the mountain has been softening nicely through the mornings and giving us some fun conditions to play with. Over the next few days the conditions should remain the same and may even see a rise in the freezing level above 2000m. Plenty of snow out there so a great time to get out and enjoy.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 19th March 2008, 8:20am
Weather conditions: bright sunny day, slightly overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A bright sunny morning this morning, with crisp spring air. A cold night last night, with windows frosting up for the first time in a few weeks. The snow had a chance to freeze on lower mountain last night, so this morning groomers should be hard pack from top to bottom.

Ski racers will enjoy the hard pack surfaces, as it means they will not have to continue the endless job of salting their course, as they have been doing the last few days.

Take out the camera today for nice shots of Tokachidake range.

Outlook for the rest of the week is sunshine, with temperatures reaching low teens over the weekend.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 19th March 2008, 8:42am
Weather conditions: Blue Skies with a little cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I was cold last night in bed though the temperature this morning seems to be around the same it has been for the last few days, however I have just confirmed with a colleague that it was colder last night - who knows, maybe the colleague is just too agreeable. The sun is out this morning and there is yet again 'a gentle breeze' and there are clouds lurking over towards the west from behind Naeba. There is a certain grey-white sky that seems to be creeping in from all horizons which tells us that its not all too blue skies today. Gelande conditions will likely be similar to yesterday - good in the morning, diabolical by 2pm.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 19th March 2008, 9:39am
Weather conditions: Clear sunny day
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Over 20 deg C at midday yesterday and it looks like it will be similar today BUT there is some snow forecast for tomorrow morning. This may well turn out to be sleet at the valley level but should be snow above 1200m.

Backcountry Advisory
With continuing warm temperatures predicted this week be wary of wet slides and large glide cracks (crevasse) opening up, especially on convex rolls.

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 19th March 2008, 11:49am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba currently sits under cloudy skies but the clouds are nice and high and visibility on all the resorts is great. Temperatures expected to be warming up a bi this afternoon and thus the lower slopes will be a bit slushy out there. Still excellent snow coverage on all the runs and the soft spring snow is quite forgiving once it has melted.

Backcountry travel advisory:

Temperatures are mild and hovering >0 at 1500 m. The thing still to keep an eye on are those heavy south faces that are waiting to come down with increased solar radiation, sharp temperature rises and or rain on the slopes. It is especially important to time traverses under South slopes early in the day or on days of cool temperatures. North Faces high in the alpine have not been receiving the same solar radiation and snow temps are still cool. Be careful of intense wind loading on the Northern aspects high in the Alpine from yesterdays wind event at ridge top. Cornices are big and will come down with the heat.

Avalanche danger will increased with any intense warming or rain. Watch solar radiated slopes, around rocks and cornices as they warm through the day.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 19th March 2008, 15:45pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
a slightly colder morning today in Nozawa and cloudy over all of the mountain. This is good news...

For we await the falling flakes.

It has been too long without snow in Nozawa. Sure, riding in the sunshine wearing only a Tshirt is a lot of fun, but there is nothing like the feeling of doing a few turns in some fresh stuff. Moderate snow is forecast overnight and light snow tomorrow.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 19th March 2008, 17:23pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Today has been generally cloudy in the region - and once again very mild with a top temperature well about 10 degrees (the reports on the TV just said 15 degrees). So, no new snow to report!

Early evening and it has started raining. Rain is actually forecast overnight and into tomorrow. While it seems very unlikely that we'll get snow at town level, there is a chance of snow up at Kagura overnight.

There were some fairly strong winds earlier on today, so Gala Yuzawa was unfortunately closed. Tomorrow should be ok though with only a slight wind currently forecast.

Tomorrow is a national holiday, so will be busier than a normal Thursday.   Read more ...
