Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 1st December 2008, 9:03am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a glorious morning in Nozawa.

Overnight 5cm of snow is reported to have fallen on the Yamabiko courses and while it is cold up there right now it should soon warm up with the fine weather we look set to enjoy today. A sprinkling of snow down to village level but that will probably be melted away fairly quickly today.

Lift operations are the same as they were and courses open today will be the Yamabiko A, C and D courses - that gives you in total around 3km of course to enjoy.

Looking ahead at the forecast, there's way too much fine weather lined up in the coming days. As it stands now, it looks like we'll need to wait until at least the weekend for another decent snowfall.   Read more ...

Good morning and a fine one it is too.

The sun is out and the cold morning will warm up fairly quickly melting away the slight snowfall that we have had down in the village. Kagura are reporting 30cm this morning (that much?!) which is allowing them to get Mitsumata up and running again.

Not much snow in the line up for the next few days.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 1st December 2008, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow fell for much of yesterday and there is a nice cover of powder over the icy base from the previous days rain. Today has only scattered clouds and the sun is out. The Hooded Triple has opened for the first time allowing access to some previously untouched powder stashes so if you're not working (like I am) make sure you get out there and enjoy it.

By tomorrow we'll have a low pressure system to the west of Japan and high pressure to the east. This is opposite to the normal winter situation and warm air from the south will be dragged up over Hokkaido along with a little moisture. This unfortunately means mild temps and a little rain. Temperatures will remain mild until the weekend when the next snowfalls are forecast.

So today looks like the best day of the week so get up there, enjoy the powder and work on your goggle tan!

Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More rain in the valley over the last few days fell fairly high up the mountain but temperatures were cool overnight leaving a decent frost this morning with some of the trees at higher elevation looking brushed white again.

A beautiful day in Hakuba today with clear blue skies and crisp temperatures measured by Hakuba Goryu to be -4 degrees at the top station and -3 degrees at the base this morning.

Temperatures are forecast to be relatively warm this week; we will update once or twice through the week.

Myoko Now!

Thursday 1st January 2009, 6:38am
Weather conditions: snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light steady snows are ready to give way to blizzard conditions later today. A sprinkling of 10cm last night gave the powder a boost, and have given the resorts a natural smoothing-out. But keep watch today for top lift closings due to winds later in the afternoon.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 1st January 2009, 8:38am
Weather conditions: Cloud and fog up higher, snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
First day of 2009 and we have been greeted with some more fresh snow - 25cm is reported for Yamabiko, bringing the depth up to 150cm. It is currently -9 degrees up there, with a westerly of around 30 km/h. The village also received around 10cm of new snow overnight. Lots of the fresh stuff around today for the early birds!

The current conditions are predicted to continue with snow showers and light snow through to Sunday morning. The freezing level should stay below village level so conditions will continue to improve across the whole mountain.

There are sure to be some sore heads today after celebrations around town with traditional midnight temple visits, fireworks and music, so get out early and avoid the crowds.

Minakami Now!

Thursday 1st January 2009, 8:50am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

Here's to 2009 being filled with bottomless powder days!

Speaking of which, the snow continues to fall in Minakami this morning. It has lightened up at present with even a couple of patches of blue sky to be seen, however the next it looks like the heavier snow will set in again mid morning.

The wind continue to blow but is slightly weaker than yesterdays gusts. It may get stronger towards midday so once again more sheltered fields would be the go for today. Houdaigi, Norn and White Valley would be the best options in Minakami.

The snow is still set to continue through to Saturday midday and then should subside, sothe riding conditions for the coming weekend should be mint. Get over your new years hangover and head to the mountains!

Afternoon update.

Now dumping hard in Minakami with a current precipitation rate of 6cm/hour. It looks like it will keep up for the 30 hours or so!    Read more ...
