Hakuba Now!

Thursday 1st December 2011, 9:22am
Weather conditions: Overcast, upper mountains obscured
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba currently sits under cloudy skies with a light snow falling. Rain began late last night and as the temperatures dropped the rain turned to snow. No real accumulation on the ground here at the village, but one can expect to have more deposits up on the upper slopes. Light rain/snow is forecasted for the rest of the day, and with any luck the cold snap will remain. It is actually starting to feel like winter is on its way.

It looks like the weather is going to cool down with a lows going into the minus next week. Great news and hopefully more snow expected as well.

Furano Now!

Thursday 1st December 2011, 9:22am
Weather conditions: Clear with passing cloud
New snowfall: 3cm
Snow depth: 60cm
The light snow yesterday continued all through the day and amounted to 3cm accummulation by the end of the day. The temperatures remain cold and look set to stay that way through the rest of the week. With these consistent cold temperatures the snow making team is hard at work topping up the natural snow fall.

Niseko Now!

Thursday 1st December 2011, 10:45am
Weather conditions: Moderate snow, heavy this morning
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The taps got turned on in Niseko late last night and carried on through the morning.

Locals awoke to at least 30cm on the ground (some people reporting over 40cm). Snow is extremely light and powdery.

The mountain peak got close to a metre of snow in little over 12 hours, currently the snow is still falling although seems to have eased up a little bit in its volume since 9am.

If this is the "light" snow that was forecast then a lot of people should be rubbing their hands (or waxing their boards) in anticipation of the heavy snow that is predicted for Friday afternoon.

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 1st December 2011, 12:14pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another cloudy morning here but noticeably colder at around 3 degrees in town - though there's hardly any wind - and there has been a sprinkling of snow overnight on the mountain sides, perhaps down to around 600m or so. While it is just cloudy at the moment in town it looks like it might well be snowing a little up at Kagura, though it may just be cloud. Even if it is snowing though, I don't think we can expect it to be anything more than a dusting.

Rain is due tomorrow and through the weekend with hopefully that being snow at higher elevations. Again, nothing major over the next week and so we will need to be patient just a bit longer...   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 1st December 2011, 12:24pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Welcome to December! Hopefully sooner rather than later this month we will be able to report huge dumps of powder snow arriving in Shiga Kogen, but that's not quite yet unfortunately.

Light snow is falling this morning in the region giving a slight dusting to places that had previously dried up and it is noticeably colder as well this morning. Over the next few days the forecast is mixed - but generall cloud with rain and/or snow. It's all going to be about the temperatures and Saturday morning in particular looks quite mild. After that temperatures look set to take another dip back down into negative numbers into next week. No huge dump on the weekly forecast horizon just perhaps a few cm here and there if we get any.

Despite the lack of snow, it looks like Takamagahara have got their triple lift operating and also the Ichinose Family area have got their number 2 pair lift moving with a 370m course open this morning. Both are reporting 20cm of snow on the short open slopes. Kumanoyu remains open with one pair lift moving and reporting 15cm.

Resorts part open [1st Dec 11]:
Takamagahara Mammoth - one triple lift
Ichinose Family - one pair lift
Kumanoyu - one pair lift   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Thursday 1st December 2011, 15:10pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Not the best of news to break - the resort is now fully closed once again after opening up earlier... the snow just didn't last and so we are now back to the waiting game.

(My apologies for not being able to post that information previously, I have been away for a few days during this pre-season period).

It should get a bit warmer on Saturday before quickly chilling down once again but apart from some dustings of snow here and there, unfortunately there isn't a good chance of decent snowfall in the coming week and so the wait may take us into the weekend after next.

We'll just have to see - will post any changes!   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 1st December 2011, 16:12pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
December starts how we would like to see it continue, with a bit of snow falling. It is only up high on Tenjin but it is welcome none-the-less. It feels really cold out today which is a change from the really mild weather we have had the rest of the week. It is now full-on countdown time to see if anywhere can make it for their original mid-December opening dates.   Read more ...
