Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 26th May 2019
Friday 1st February 2019, 7:13am
There is a light to moderate wind blowing and it is snowing very lightly. The snow is very fine and in the village there is only a dusting that has accumulated on the ground. It is forecast to get a little colder during the day. The slopes are in great condition with all the recent snow that has fallen. This pattern of light snow and some wind will remain through today and tomorrow.

Geto Kogen Now!
Friday 1st February 2019, 7:52am
Light snow in the morning yesterday with just a generally cloudy afternoon. Oh yes and back to light snow later in the evening leaving us with just a bit of snow on the ground to measure - actually just 1cm. Surely more than that built up on the mountain, I would think.
Cloudy skies again this morning with limited visibility just now.
Hopefully we might get some more snow tomorrow. Possibly some today too actually. We'll just have to see what nature delivers to us.

This morning Kagura are reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20-30cm.
We have measured 32cm in town (and 35cm to the north of Yuzawa in the Shiozawa area of Minamiuonuma) and that what is going on the report. All those numbers sound like a good start to February!
Visibility is very limited in places though this morning and snow is forecast for most of the day today so not conditions for everyone.
Cloud with light snow is forecast for tomorrow and then some sunshine on Sunday - along with those rather warm temps that we are expecting.
Looks like the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed due to wind conditions.
Other ski resorts appear to be opening as normal. Doesn't feel particularly winds down here in town...

Snow and wind
Good morning everyone.
Blimey, it was extremely cold just before when I went out to measure the snow.
It was worth it though, with me measuring a good 21cm of fresh snowfall to start off the month of February. Looking like excellent quality snow too. And with more of it for sure out there at higher elevations, there's going to be some fun to have.
But. We might not get to lots of it today. That's because the wind is blowing again and lifts are on hold at the start of the day. As I post this report all of the top lifts are not starting the day as planned, as well as the main gondola at Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri and a few more upper lifts.
Perhaps a break in snow over the weekend but more snow is due early week onwards. Let's see how this wind situation shapes up.
Conditions are likely going to be challenging today. If you are venturing out in such conditions, do take special care.
Niseko Avalanche Report:

Lots of cloud, some blue sky
Good morning from Hakuba.
Some more snow to report to you this morning though differing numbers, the northern Cortina reporting 20cm with Goryu and Happo reporting 3-5cm and 47 reporting 5-10cm. Sounds like the northern areas got a bit more of it this morning.
It is good and cold this morning so conditions should be good out there. There's some breaks in the cloud too so visibility is good and there's some dramatic views.
OK so looking towards the weekend.
Some sun tomorrow perhaps and then there's that worryingly warm (and hopefully short) blip that is due on Sunday/Monday. Which might bring some rubbish rain but end up bringing smiles to our faces with snow on Monday. It's going to be interesting to see what happens with that lot. Fingers crossed.

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Friday 1st February 2019, 8:49am
Hello and good morning from Nozawa.
Some fresh snow to report to start February off. The resort reports 25cm of fresh on the top Yamabiko area with 10-15cm on lower areas.
It's a cold start to the morning too with decent visibility in most areas, bit limited on the top. Snow forecast for today, easing off as the afternoon goes on.
OK so how's the forecast for the weekend shaping up? Well, currently it seems we can probably expect some cloud/sun tomorrow and then a warming up with temps nudging up a bit too high for comfort on Sunday. But hopefully it will be short lived and we'll be back to cold come Monday. And while we might get more snow on Monday, we should expect some rain before the snow.
So I would say that the pick of the weekend is going to be Saturday...

Shiga Kogen Now!
Friday 1st February 2019, 8:51am
Morning from Shiga Kogen.
Blowing winds and snow on this very cold morning. It's affecting some lifts early on and certainly not the kindest of conditions to be outside. We're gnarlier than that though aren't we? ;)
I am measuring 14cm of fresh snow and I note that the Yakebitaiyama resort are are reporting about 20cm and Kumanoyu just 5cm. Regional variances as well as a bit of wind mixed into there explaining that I think. But it is coming down nicely now so there's more on the way during the day today.
The weekend is set to be calmer, clearer and brighter.
And warmer too, particularly on Sunday. We're high up here in Shiga Kogen and so avoid warm ups too much - still keeping fairly cold up here. Let us hope that is the case on Sunday because it looks like it's going to be borderline toasty down in the valleys.
Shiga Kogen resort info: Friday 1st February 2019
The below information is manually checked for each report. Official snow depth numbers are as reported by the ski resorts themselves.

Some lovely flakes of snow falling this morning. And while the resort is reporting 20cm, I am measuring 27cm. And counting. It's due for the day, perhaps less so this afternoon.
Limited visibility though so there's not much to see other than those lovely flakes falling against a grey/silver kind of soupy background.
It's a very cold morning too with a moderate northerly blowing around.
Calmer and clearer tomorrow? And rather warm due on Sunday. With the fresh from today, if you are choosing one of the weekend days, I'd go with Saturday.
Hope you come to enjoy it.

Overcast and snowing
Another good day of snow. Light snow. More snow than expected. Again.
Pretty good wind overnight, too, which shaped this nice, light snow into kind of amazing waves and dunes around my house (which is open to north winds) less so at base level, where we (and most of the ski areas) are more sheltered from gusts by forests and hills. And it's still snowing pretty heavily, probably coming down at a rate of a few fresh centimeters every hour. Another case from this season of we either get a whole lot, or just a little bit, and definitely more days when we get a lot.
Having said this, though, it seems like the ski areas have hardly added anything new to their snow depths, where right here at the base of Akakura Kanko we got a lot, and the total keeps inching up.... So I'm sure some won't believe me, but I'm recording what I found, and it's not what the resorts are reporting!
Very late report sorry. About 5cm of snow but an unpleasant day here. Whiteout conditions with all of the lifts closed for lots of the day just one opening up later on. Not nice. Hopefully things will be calmer tomorrow...
Strong winds at Tenjin this morning but seems pretty isolated as a couple of valleys over at Hodaigi there was gentle snow falling and pretty good conditions. Tenjin didn't open all day due to howling winds and tomorrow will be a roll of the dice.
Forecast is for more strong winds before it all clears and turns blue on Sunday.
The dark side of the forecast, rain forecast for Sunday evening and warm temps to way up high.
Lets hope we can dodge that bullet as we haven't really had much of a rain event all season. Read more ...
