Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 8:32am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It got a bit cloudy later in the day yesterday but we didn't get any snow or rain.

It is another blue sky fine morning here early on and will likely rise to about 6 degrees midday. Similar conditions are also forecast for tomorrow as well.

Gala Yuzawa have opened an additional course in the Northern Area as well today (making it 5 courses open in total there) and today Naeba will be opening an additional course (Number 3 gelende). Conditions at Kagura, Gala and Naeba range from good - very good due to the decent snowfalls high up over the weekend. Expect them to be busy as other resorts struggle to open.

Yuzawa Kogen have also announced that they are going to open up their upper slopes on Friday (22nd).

Town level ski resorts are facing opening delays though. Every day is important now as most places expected to open by this weekend at the latest, but the signs are unfortunately not good at the moment. The forecast is for fine weather for today and tomorrow, then cloud and mild temperatures on Friday and Saturday and fine weather on Sunday and so - unless the forecast changes considerably - it is looking very unlikely that more resorts will be able to open before Christmas.

NASPA Ski Garden last night announced that there is just 10cm on the slopes and basically no chance of opening on the 23rd as planned. Other resorts will probably be doing the same and basically just be on stand-by and open up as soon as they can when the snows arrive.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 8:35am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday we had at least 10cm of beautiful powder snow here in Furano town and probably more like 20cm on the mountain and yet the official snow depth given by the resort hasn't changed!

I went up the mountain around 10.30am yesterday and made straight for my favourite course, 'Challenge C', which is ungroomed and at that time was a good 15cm deep in fresh powder snow and only had tracks from 2 snowboarders and one skiier - perfect. I will download some photos below.

The snow stopped overnight and this morning is overcast but no precipitation. Temperatures are a little warmer this morning, -4 at the moment, but not expected to get above zero today. Should be another great day on the mountain.    Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Partly Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Little snow fell through yesterday and winds picked up in the afternoon packing down the previous day's snow. Today has dawned partly cloudy with good visisbility (something we're not that used to in Niseko) and the winds are light. Will be a good day to explore the mountain and find pockets of powder in shletered areas. Tomorrow we may get a little snow but it will be wet at village level. Things are still looking good for a reasonable amount of snow over the weekend.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 8:57am
Weather conditions: Sunny skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba is under sunny skies again today with light winds out of the North West and temperature is now -5 deg.C . Should be warming up to the 6~7 deg.C mark today and forecasted to cloud up tomorrow. Possible snow for Friday and Saturday now and we hope the forecasters are not just playing with us!

Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47, Tsugaike and Happo are all open today with minimal lift operation. Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura, Hakuba Iwatake and Hakuba San Alpina are all on standby and will open when snow conditions allow.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning things are similar to how they were yesterday as it is another fine morning and the sun is out. It is still very cold though which is keeping the snow in place and on the icy/snow covered roads. While the amount of snow and the number of courses open is limited, the conditions out on the hills is actually quite good. I had my first runs of the season yesterday and was happily surprised. As with many other regions right now though we are in need of a decent dump of snow.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 9:59am
Weather conditions: Sunny on the mountain. Low lying mist over the village to clear.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another beautiful day on the slopes in Nozawa; Sunny with low lying cloud in the village to clear later in the morning. No new snowfall since yesterday. The temperature on the mountain is -5C at present and it's starting to get a little icy on the slopes. The forecast is now for light snow high up on Thursday night, but realistically it is not going to be bringing us the snow we need to open up more.

The machine operators worked most of the day yesterday to compact a nice base on the groomed runs on the mountain. Yamabiko now has 80cm and Uenotaira 50cm. The lower regions of the resort remain closed.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 10:02am
Weather conditions: Blue sky day.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another beautiful sunny blue sky day in Minakami. The snow still remains at the village level, but is slowly dissapearing. A clear stary night last night with low temperatures of around -5 deg C has a created a crust layer on the surface of the snow, and icy roads in some areas.

Tonight it is forecast to be another clear night, so the crust is likley to get bigger but the roads should clear up today. The forecast precipitation for Thursday now predicts snow starting from mid evening. Friday is looking like it will be cloudy, followed by a sunny weekend.

Houdaigi has been able to make snow over the past few nights and will be opening the family course tomorrow. All of the other fields are planning to open as predicted.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 20th December 2006, 11:48am
Weather conditions: Bright and sunny. Blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The night sky last night was amazing, so clear, so many stars! The temperature was down to -6 with snow canons doing there stuff all over the Naeba mountain.

Not a great deal of change from yesterday. A very blue sky, though it looks like theres some low cloud over towards Tashiro and Kagura, talking of which, according to the Kagura website, has excellent gelande conditions at the moment, due to the most recent snow fall. The temperature this morning is spot on zero degrees at village level - keeping cool enough for the hats and of course sunglasses are a must today.
