Furano Now!

Weather conditions: getting colder again after a warm spell, cloudy, winds gusting
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Some snow fall early this morning has left about 5cm in the village. This fresh snow is just a show though, as it will not be enough to change conditions on the moutain. Still expect hard packed groomers and heavy off piste skiing with all the steep black runs moguled up.

Get out early to grab the fresh runs on the groomers with the new snow, and be careful after lunch when the loose fresh snow gets pushed around and the groomers get bumpy.

Forecast is still for a big dump Friday through Saturday....fingers crossed.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 21st February 2008, 9:09am
Weather conditions: Snowy with clouds.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday started with blue skies but that quickly changed to overcast. Last night at 9pm snow started dumping down and by 11pm there was 10 centimeters on the ground. Unfortunately, the snow stopped shortly after that and we have woken up to around 15 cm on the ground. It is overcast and snow has started to fall again.

The Patrol are stating that the top gates are closed but could open later in the day. The wind is picking up and storms, wind and more snow is predicted through the weekend. We are back into winter mode after 3 days of spring skiing.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 21st February 2008, 9:15am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the sun was out for the entire day with very warm temperatures. The snow rolled in around 19:00 and fell throughout the night bringing 30cm of fresh to the valley with it forecast to continue to lunch time today.

The wind blew hard last night and looks like it will increase in intensity towards midday today, so sheltered ski areas would be the go. (Houdaigi, Minakami Kogen) Tomorrow the wind should subside and the sun returns for another fine day.

Looking towards the weekend, it looks like more snow for Saturday and Sunday with only light Northerly winds expected.

Backcountry Advisory
Snow on South faces was heavy by mid morning with North faces starting to crust towards the afternoon. The evidence of many large recent avalanches (size 2-3) were obvious on the South face of Mt Tanigawa with debris filling the valley. Data collected from a pit on the North face (1300m) revealed that there is still a very weak layer below the new snow, as deep as 200cm in places (CTM 12@ 192cm SC). This layer could cause large avalanches, especially on steeper terrain. Caution is advised.

Naeba Now!

Thursday 21st February 2008, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Snowy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temperature has been up and down like a yo-yo over the last few days and nights. It got so warm yesterday afternoon it even rained when I drove down to Yuzawa.

This rain quickly turned to snow though and I was weary of the coming weather on my return back up Route 17 in to the Mitsumata, Naeba area. I left at 5pm, returned at 8pm and was greeted by 30cm of snow in Asagai.

And as far as snow levels are concerned?

We're talking 'Wellington boot fillers' this morning. It was a tough journey out of the front door with the 70cm sitting on the deck and further dodging the diggers humming around the town with their chain chinking on the tarmac.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 21st February 2008, 9:36am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well there is about 5-10cm or so of snow overnight I suppose but the snow is not falling at the moment at least at town level, though there may be snow falling higher up. It is quite bright around town and even though there is a lot of cloud around the forecast is telling us to possibly expect some sun later on in the day.

At the moment it is also looking like tomorrow will be a fine and sunny day - a good day to get some weekday skiing or snowboarding in before the weekend crowds arrive and much better than the rain that was on the forecast not so long ago....

Incidentally, Kagura is reporting 30cm, but once again the official snow depth numbers are unchanged.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 21st February 2008, 10:11am
Weather conditions: Blue skies with some high cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Beautiful blue skies yesterday morning then the clouds rolled in around 3:00 PM and continued through the evening. We woke this morning to blue skies and cold temperatures of -4 in the valley and -7 on top...there was a decent line for the gondola this morning and with little wind and some fresh powder it was worth it. The day has warmed and as of 10:00 AM the temperature at 800 m is around 1 degree Celcius with bluebird skies and some high cloud. Forecast for a cold clear night - full moon today - and another sunny day tomorrow.

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Below Tree Line: Low

Tree Line: Low

Alpine: Considerable

Backcountry Travel Advisory as at Feb 20th:

Three back to back sunny days here in Hakuba have taken their toll on steeper south facing aspects. Expect melt freeze crust on exposed south and west face with some fresh snow on top from yesterdays snowfall. Winds have scoured the ridges so one will encounter harder crust and wind slab on these areas. Some large cornices still remain off many ridges so take due care on or near them. Sluffing on steeper terrain is still a possibility so avoid passing under chutes/avalanche paths. North facing slopes that were not overly wind loaded were stable at lower slope angles, but on slopes above 40 degrees one could expect sluffing and slides on areas of tension (convexing rollers etc.) Instability in the form of a weak layer (failing on buried surface hoar) was found on North facing slopes (Kita Hiodori) at 90-100cm down. A resistent planer failure occuured at Hard 2 compression test.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 21st February 2008, 10:17am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The promised snow fell hard last night, although not for as long as we had hoped it would. The snow was not as dry as usual, walking around last night and getting hit actually made you wet. It settled to a depth of 20-25 cm in town and should be quite fresh on top of a hard base today

Yesterday was spent recovering from the big dump. Townspeople risking life and limb removing deep and well settled snow from their roofs was a common sight. We are expecting another big front to come through from Friday night so its probably best they get that out of the way.    Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 21st February 2008, 11:16am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Early on this morning there was a fair bit of cloud hanging on but now there is bright sunshine and fabulous conditions out on the hills. There is only a slight breeze and temperatures are perhaps generally a little lower than they have been. Snow depths are unchanged at the resort and conditions should be similar to those yesterday. It's also looking like tomorrow should also be fine weather with snow currently lined up for the weekend.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --

Heavy snows last night until 5am when the sun came out. Quite a bit of piling ocurred in only a few hours, leaving today in brilliant condition.

A lot of melting during the day left the afternoon slushy even into the upper reaches.
More sun tomorrow, with a snowy weekend ahead.

The pick of the day tomorrow is Suginohara, as the view will be awesome, and despite the warm conditions, the variety of Sugi should provide the good with the bad.
