Snow and weather reports posted on Monday 20th May 2019
Thursday 21st February 2019, 7:23am
There is a light dusting of snow on the ground and it is snowing very lightly with fine snow flakes. Yesterday was tropical again and has had an effect on the snow on the lower slopes and all around the village. On slope conditions will be a bit frosty on the lower slopes, but okay higher up. There is low cloud this morning and the start of -4c will head up to +1c by midday. It sure feels like spring has arrived early and this warmer weather is forecast to stay through until next week.

Geto Kogen Now!
Thursday 21st February 2019, 7:43am
Not sure I was expecting this, but 15cm of fresh snow on the ground this morning. We got some light rain during the day from mid-morning but we can perhaps forgive that with some snow to see this morning. As you might expect with the milder temperatures, it isn't top notch mid winter powder... it's a bit heavy, but it's definitely better than rain.
It is snowing now so it will be interesting to see how the day goes.
Fine weather is currently forecast for tomorrow.
Official snow depths:
* Top: 395cm * Base: 270cm
Planned operating lifts - subject to change due to weather:
* Number 1 Gondola * Number 1 pair lift * Number 2 pair lift * Quad
- The Number 2 Gondola is usually rested on normal weekdays
Courses & Tree Runs - subject to change due to weather:
* All of the main official courses are available * All tree runs open
Some more snow this morning - 2cm of it in fact, and it looks pretty decent condition too for what it's worth.
It is a beautiful morning. The sun is out and we have mostly clear blue skies with just a bit of cloud over our mountain and Mt Yotei is looking magnificent. Currently -2C here at base. The forecast shows a fair bit of sun to be expected over the coming days so we can enjoy that, just hoping that it doesn't warm up too much.
SnowJapan launched something new yesterday. They are still keeping fairly quiet about it for the moment as it settles in and plan to be telling you more properly next week, but I thought I would mention it today. With permission of course! It's called SnowJapan Community. There's an sort-of-experimental member-to-member Q&A section in there. If you follow the link below, be sure to read the 'Welcome' blog entry that explains things. And if you want to participate - ask a question or answer a question (*for the moment) - you can easily join or login using an existing social media account:
It's all new and shiny for the moment, so I know that SnowJapan will be putting a lot of effort into developing it over the coming months. I'd keep an eye on it.
And a big otsukaresama-deshita to SnowJapan folk!
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain Base 6.00am: -2°, 2cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -3.8°, WSW0.8m/s, 2cm new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 250cm, 1100m: light winds, -6.2°. Hirafu 1000m: -5.8°, SSE2.0m/s. Village: Mizuno no Sawa: -4.88°, SSE0.4m/s, 2cm new snow in the last 24hrs. Kutchan Weather Station: -0.4°, SSW0.8m/s, snow depth 163cm. Cape Benkei: N6m/s, Cape Kamui: calm, pressure 1016hPa, wave 0.7m.
We are currently in a low pressure zone but the sea and mountains are calm. There has been no new snow and only minor cornice and snowdrift development. From observation the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and be prepared before going out of bounds. Large cracks are starting to open up around the mountain. Be careful falling into them. Its a good idea to carry 7.7mm/20m of rope for rescues. The snow is hard and a bit savage, be careful.
Today ski patrol are doing a more snow tests in Yunosawa. Do not follow them to ride in Yunosawa area. By Niseko Rules, Yunosawa and Harunotaki are strictly off limits areas, but these tests are being conducted with the aim of opening up Yunosawa for future riding. Have a good day.

Morning from Yuzawa.
First of all the snow news: Kagura are reporting 5cm of fresh snow and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 2cm.
I can't add any snow to the report as there has been no new cm down at town level, a dusting in areas as you get a little higher out of town. It has been a bit of a wet few days with some snow trying to fall earlier on. The sprinklers in the road were turned on for a while there earlier on this morning.
Right now though it doesn't feel like it is about to snow - in any decent way anyway - though there is a chance according to the forecast; there's also a chance it will be raining.
It is feeling somewhat colder today though and I would imagine a better chance of there being snow at higher elevations. No word from Kagura as yet at the time of writing.
Sunshine is forecast for tomorrow with a high of around 6-7C.
I wish I could report the prospect of some heavy snowfall sometime in the coming week to give us a good fresh layer, but that is not looking likely. We may need to play with what we got and hope temperatures keep on the cold side.

Good morning from Madarao.
Visibility is... slightly better this morning! Though still limited. It feels colder this morning.
There's no cm of fresh snow to report other than a dusting with things having being a bit... damp. Though perhaps we might get a bit of snow today before the sunshine that is forecast for tomorrow.
Snow conditions are surely not going to be perfect this weekend, but that doesn't mean not fun. Just come with an adjusted 'early spring' mind-set and then we can just be surprised and happy when the next snow arrives to make things light and fluffy again. I do believe we will have that -- just not for the next run of days.
Planned operations for Thursday 21st February 2019

Shiga Kogen Now!
Thursday 21st February 2019, 8:42am
Good morning from Shiga Kogen.
I was hoping to be able to report some snow this morning and it's just a dusting really. No new cm to add to the report just a thin layer but it has been snowing this morning on and off, in places. Nothing major. Still, better than rain and it does feel colder today.
The week ahead though is looking more like relatively mild than really cold, though there seems to be a chance of snow around Saturday. I wouldn't expect anything big though. Read more ...

Good morning from Hakuba.
Just a bit of fresh snow to report from Hakuba Cortina (base and top) and Hakuba Happo-one (top of Riesen lift), both reporting 3cm of snowfall in those places. Other resorts don't seem to be mentioning any fresh.
There is a lot of cloud around this morning with some blue sky added into the mix in places. It is noticeably colder this morning but I don't have any fresh snow to report on the ground.
Clearer weather and sun is forecast for tomorrow and it's going to be mild.
Please don't shout at the messenger! ;)

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 21st February 2019, 8:46am
Cloudy and moody
Good morning from Nozawa.
There's lots of moody grey clouds around this morning. Nothing happening right now but we might get some light snow today as it keeps cold - definitely colder this morning - but even if we get that it will probably clear up by tonight.
And then tomorrow sun and clearer skies are on the forecast.
Maybe some snow on Saturday? Not a whole lot more on the weekly forecast as it stands now.

The gloom is gone today in Myoko; we even have a little bit of blue sky and occasional sunshine to brighten things up.
A tiny bit of fresh snow on top of the wet and crunchy stuff below. It's still not great outside the ski area, but there are dark clouds coming in from the north that look like they might bring in some fresh white stuff. The winds offshore have definitely moved from yesterdays west/southwest to the north, which is a good sign. Temperatures are also down today, another good indicator of things other than rain and fog.
It's been pretty quiet and stable this season, though. No upheavals at the resorts, no major electrical failures or riots or anything really to report. Boring, I know. Even the mighty snowthrower, a constant companion in this report, has been a very good worker this year. No belts thrown to delay putting out the Now! page....
It was a rainy day yesterday but it happily turned into snow overnight and there's some fresh snow covering the slopes this morning. Not a lot, just a few cm.
The weather yesterday was very warm feeling like the end of March, but I am happy to report that this morning it feels much colder. It's more than 10 degrees colder than yesterday.
There is a lot of cloud but some blue skies are appearing, so conditions this morning should be nice.
Ski resorts in the southern area of Mt, Bandai open today are Alts Bandai, Inawashiro, Inawashiro resort and Listel.
The Mt. Adatara area ski resorts - Minowa and Numajiri - are also covered with some fresh snow this morning.

Mprning from Naeba.
1cm of snow to add to the reports this morning and light snow falling early on. We need much more for a proper reset, though obviously it is preferable to rain. So rather hand icy conditions on the slopes at the moment.
It does feel a bit colder this morning and currently around 0C.
We're likely to have some sunshine tomorrow, with the chance of some more (light?) snow on Saturday.
Official snow depth:
All lifts plan to be operating apart from the following (some lifts rested on weekdays):
- Prince Number 1 Gondola - Number 8 high speed lift - Daishamen romance pair lift
All courses now open apart from the following:
- Splash Bowl

Appi Kogen Now!
Thursday 21st February 2019, 9:38am
Mostly sunny skies, some cloud
Hello from Appi,
Calm winds, sunny skies and a few cm of snow that fell yesterday will make for a decent time on the mountain. Temperatures have dipped south again into the minus zone and will stay that way through the weekend.
Not much in the way of snow in the forecast and sunny skies over the weekend with fairly light winds. Most runs are in decent shape with very little traffic to break them up.
If you want a few quite hours I’d recommend heading up there today or tomorrow as this weekend may turn into a veritable madhouse.
Planned lift operations & course areas (subject to change due to weather conditions):
- Appi Gondola - Central Quad lift - Central Number 2 - Central Number 3A - Central Number 5 - Sailer quad - Vista quad - Nishimori
* All 5 tree run areas should be open as normal when the lift operations allow - register to use them at Plaza 1st Floor
Official groomed snow depth (as reported by resort):
