Furano Now!

Sunday 21st January 2007, 7:55am
Weather conditions: Low cloud burning off to give clear blue skies.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow overnight for the first time in a while but we did get around 5cm of light powder snow in town during the day yesterday. The temperature is -10 at the moment with some low lying clouds slowly burning off to reveal what looks to be our first bluebird since the new year.

The forecast is predicting a clear, sunny day today and then a cloudy night with temperatures dropping to -16. Tomorrow is predicted to start off sunny and then return to snow in the afternoon.

So looks like we may have some great views across to the Daisetsuzan Range today, take your camera and look for the steaming volcano around Tokachidake.   Read more ...

Even early on this morning we are being treated to sunny blue skies - it is looking very tempting out there. It is also very cold but that should not put you off... and remember the camera! Outside the building here the thermometer is saying -10.

Conditions were good yesterday and they should be today as well.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 21st January 2007, 8:14am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a fine day with the sun out especially in the afternoon.

There is some low cloud in the Minamiuonuma valley this morning but that will no doubt clear as the morning progresses. About that cloud and in Yuzawa currently the sun is out and it has started as a fine sunny day with the temperature at +1 degrees. It is forecast to rise to around +4 degrees during the day. There is almost no wind today as well, maybe just a slight breeze at the moment.

So it is another fine day to be out on the slopes of Yuzawa.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Mainly clear skies.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night was cold and crisp. At midnight the sky was clear and some stars were visible, so there has been no new snowfall overnight. Visibility is currently very good with Youtei San and much of Annupuri Peak being visible and patches of blue sky showing through.

Today will remain mostly clear with good visibility and light westerly winds. All gates are expected to open today.

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 21st January 2007, 9:11am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning. The dawn came in clear but the clouds on the eastern horizon greyed the light-show along the corniced ridges of Goryu Dake. Yesterday the clear sky precluded any new precipitation. The ski-instructors of my aquaintance report that yesterday at about the 1,200 m a.s.l. level and below the snow on the piste had gone through a melt-freeze cycle. Above that, on the slopes not directly affected by high incident angle of the sun's rays, the snow is still merely hard packed to packed powder.

Today the forecast is calling for a clear sky, valley bottom temperatures to 5C, light west to north-west wind, and no precipitation. Precipitation is forecast starting late on the 22nd.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) the 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Clear
Temperature: Present: -7.0 C
Maximum: 2 C
Minimum: -9.5 C
Wind: Very light from the west
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 928 hPa and falling slowly
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 66 cm
Foot penetration: 14 cm
Surface: facets, size 3 mm
Density of surface snow: 140 kilograms per cubic meter

Above Tree Line: Moderate

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Low

N.B. The hazard may increase with daytime warming.

Travel Advisory:
Yesterday a crew of professional snow observers climbed to 2,320 m a.s.l. on the Happo One ridge above the lift accessible terrain and descended north to the Kara Matsu Zawa (from 1,800 m a.s.l. down via the Garagara Sawa). A test profile at 2,300 m a.s.l., north-east exposure, HS 230 cm, slope anlgle of 33 degrees (air temperature: -5 C, snow surface temperature: -6 C, snow temperature down 10 cm: -8 C) was done. A single compression test had the results of "moderate" down 15 cm. The shear was a "resistant planar" on decomposed crystals, size 2 mm. Another hard shear was observed down 35 cm at the interface of a "one finger" and a "pencil" layer. The skiing quality was generally good. The terrain was getting heavily tracked out in the lower half. A major hazard concern was parties of fellow back-country travellers above. One group had 15 or more members.

The same crew on in the Cortina Lift Company area observed/experienced surprisingly good powder snow skiing to about 800 m a.s.l. on a due north aspect.

Once again, the surface snow this morning in the Hira Kawa Station Snow Study Plot was definitely recrystallized but generally settling well. Note the daily increase in the density {two days ago: 80 kg/cubic metre (m3), yesterday: 110 kg/m3, today: 140 kg/m3}.

There was a minor amount of snow transport observed at ridge crest.

Yesterday the uphill ski penetration was 20 the northerly aspect.

Daytime warming will probably raise the level of the hazard.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Sunday 21st January 2007, 9:24am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another bluebird sky day in Minakami! The skies are clear, the sun is out and there is no wind. A great day for heading up the mountain.

Last night was another clear stary night, with some freezing occuring that will create some icy patches. However the sun is likely to soften the snow again by mid morning to make for good conditions under foot.

The snow is forecast to hit early tomorrow morning and continue for most of the day but with it may come some strong winds. The remainder of the week is looking reasonably clear at this stage.

The snow from 3 days ago was as deep as 50cm in places off piste, especially in areas sheltered from the wind. Most of the powder has been shredded over the weekend but a good dump tomorrow should replenish powder supplies.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 21st January 2007, 9:24am
Weather conditions: Blue Skies!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blue skies.

White mountain, blue skies, big contrast. It's a sunglasses day today... and maybe a beer or 2 at the top of the mountain?

Gelande conditions have been quite hard, especially yesterday with the temperatures staying relatively low. So expect to receive something sore if you hit the deck today as it will likely be a little similar - hard and icy in places.

The Asagai half-pipe also opened yesterday, an icy pipe with not the most vertical of transitions - more snow definitely needed to shape this baby up good and proper. Nevertheless a much needed opening for all the fidgeting locals who I think were needing to pump some serious transition.

As said, not a cloud in the sky, and no wind with a -4 start to the day. So we can also expect the afternoon to warm up with a little bit of melt.

Roll on Monday nights snow!!

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 21st January 2007, 9:50am
Weather conditions: Fine and clear.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful sunny day most of the yesterday on the mountain and the same should be true about today. The snow is still great and there are a few people on the slopes. The temperatures on the mountain at the moment are -4C at Yamabiko and -9C at Uenotaira. The visibility is great, and the views down the valley are excellent.
The base depths are more or less consistant, with 180cm and Yamabiko and 130cm on Uenotaira.

The forecast is for the weather to be fine for the rest of the day and for clouds to roll in tonight. Light snow should start tomorrow and continue at least untill Tuesday night.
