Mostly clear and sunny, few clouds
There have been some dustings of snow to be seen on mountain tops yesterday mornings, and as you can see below there is a thin coating of snow in the main Kagura course. Not a huge amount by any stretch of the imagination - and no official report from Kagura just yet - but it is good to see all the same.
This morning the clouds have for the most part cleared and the sun is out and it is a lovely morning. It should be a bit warmer today, perhaps getting up to around 12C later on in the day down here in town.
So, can Kagura open on Friday? With almost no snow as of this morning and clear skies - well, that obviously seems extremely unlikely. It may well be snowing again on Friday, but it doesn't look like that will continue for long.
Anyway, we will keep you updated.
Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions.
Friday 23rd November 2018 - Kagura (via Mitsumata Ropeway)
Sunday 23rd December 2018 - Hakkai Sanroku - Itsukamachi
Friday 28th December 2018 - Ishiuchi Hanaoka
Saturday 29th November 2018 - Mt Granview
It looks like the small Ludens Yuzawa ski hill will not be operating for the 2018-2019 season. The official reason is 'maintenance' and it is unclear if and when it will re-open. Read more ...

Fine and sunny
It is a beautiful morning here in Hakuba - blue skies, sunny and the white-peaked mountain backdrop is looking magnificent. Nice and chilly too.
The slopes don't have any snow on them yet though, so ski lifts moving from Friday is just not going to happen. The Happo-one, 47, Goryu and Tsugaike ski resorts will just be on standby to get some lifts moving as soon as possible once there is enough snow.
Looks like there'll be some snow on Friday though the forecast doesn't seem to show it continuing much beyond that, for the moment anyway.
Cloud, bit of sun trying to break through at times, and...
Good morning everyone from my secret Hirafu base.
I am happy to be able to bring you some snowy news. Hurray!
I have measured 3cm of the lovely stuff here at Hirafu base and of course there will be more of that higher up on the mountain. Just how much - I don't know. If and when I hear anything on that I will of course let you know.
Hirafu and Annupuri are hoping to get some lifts open from Friday. We will need more snow for that to be able to happen, but the forecast is looking pretty decent over the coming week (especially from tomorrow evening). So even if they are not able to opening on Friday, perhaps they might be able to open soon after.
The official planned opening dates of the ski resorts are as follows:
- Niseko Grand Hirafu: Friday 23rd November 2018 - Niseko Annupuri: Friday 23rd November 2018 - Niseko Village: Saturday 1st December 2018 - Niseko Hanazono: Saturday 1st December 2018
Actual opening dates will depend on snow conditions. Read more ...

The weather definitely turned to winter mode today. It snowed throughout the day and in Kitanomine village the snow on the ground peaked at around 7cm accumulation. Unfortunately the ground temperature at village level is still a bit warm and the snow has started to melt away. It is a different situation on the upper mountain where the ground is cold and temperatures stayed well below zero. The resort has reported 20-30cm at the top of Furano Ropeway. More snow is on the forecast tomorrow with the high temperatures forecast at +2c and the low -7c. Read more ...
