Cloud, some blue sky
Yesterday ended up with dramatic weather conditions - heavy rain and strong winds. Warm too with the temperature remaining over 10C overnight. It's about 13C now and there's still a strong wind out there, but luckily it is not raining right at this moment. There's lots of cloud still in the sky but some blue sky visible as well in places.
We're back to Monday, and so the resorts that are scheduled to open from now until Friday are just Kagura and Gala Yuzawa with both Naeba and Kandatsu planning to open once again for the Golden Week holidays (28th April until 6th May).
Actually I say open, but due to the winds both the Tashiro area of Kagura and Gala Yuzawa are actually closed for the day today again due to the strong winds. What is open today is just the Mitsumata area of Kagura - and they are saying that if the winds calm down then they might open up the Gondola and parts of Kagura. Actually the forecast is for less wind from now and so there's a real chance that might happen.
We might be on the receiving end of a bit more rain late today, but tomorrow and Wednesday are still set to be clearer and warmer still.
There has been a real noticeable melt of snow over the weekend - suddenly some rice fields are visible. It always somehow ends up being surprising how quickly it melts away once things start to warm up. The heavy rain of yesterday certainly washed away lots of snow from town areas.

Light rain, cloud, wind
Well, this morning I bring news of... light rain. So not the best of mornings with grey clouds and rain falling - poor visibility as well up on the fog/cloud covered mountains. Add some wind into the mix and I don't think we can expect many people to be out there today.
Pretty much that is what is forecast for the day, with things clearing up tomorrow. Wednesday is still looking like it will be a sunny and very warm day.
At Grand Hirafu, the #3 and #4 lifts have been on standby due to the weather conditions, so only the Ace #2 moving early on. At Annupuri, the Jumbo #4 lift is on hold as well.
Current lift operations (23rd April 2012 @ 9am):
Grand Hirafu: Ace Quad Lift No2 King Hooded Triple Lift #3 [ON HOLD DUE TO WIND & FOG] King Lift #4 [ON HOLD DUE TO WIND & FOG] The Hirafu Gondola will operate on 28th, 29th, 30th April, and also from 3rd May until 6th May.
Annupuri: Annupuri Gondola Jumbo No1 quad Jumbo No3 pair Jumbo No4 pair [ON HOLD DUE TO POOR VISIBILITY]
Grand Hirafu and Annupuri both plan to be open until 6th May. The Hanazono and Niseko Village areas are now closed. Niseko Village plans to re-open for the Golden Week holiday period from Sunday 29th April until Sunday 6th May.
Not nice conditions yesterday with wind and rain. Yikes.
This morning there has still been some wind, but the rain is holding off for now. Due to the wind today only the Mitsumata area of Kagura is open - though if possible they might open up the Kagura Gondola as well and get a bit of Kagura open.
Tomorrow things should be back to normal - for daily updates in the week, please refer to the Yuzawa Now page.
We will update this Naeba Now report before each weekend right through until the season at Kagura, and in the meantime we will be keeping the Yuzawa Now! reports going on a daily basis right through until the last ski lift stops moving.
Resort Operations, 23rd April (subject to change) Naeba: Naeba re-opens for Golden Week (April 28th - May 6th) Kagura: Only part of Mitsumata open 21st April due to wind. Official snow depths Naeba: 160cm Kagura: 320cm Read more ...

Morning from Hakuba, and it's a wet one. The rain is coming down, the roads are wet, the mountains are not visible due to the cloud cover and visibility up on the slopes looks poor up there. At least it isn't freezing cold up there, but I think lots of people might well decide to take the day off today and soak in an onsen!
Tomorrow should be much nicer with sun forecast and the mercury likely to rise to perhaps around 18C.... and even higher on Wednesday.

Cloud, blue sky
Things are a bit more back to normal this morning with the upper runs once again open. Up until and including Friday the plan is for the Gondola and the two Yamabiko quads to be operating. You can still ski down to base on the left hand side of the mountain (as you look from base) via Uenotaira and then get a provided shuttle bus back over to the Gondola to go back up - so still a large course area available. Please note that Skyline is now closed, but I think they might well be planning on having at least part open from next weekend as the Skyline Link lift is down to be open from 28th April until 6th May for Golden Week.
The rain that we had overnight along with the warmer temperatures has seen a bit more ground visibile on lower areas. It won't be long before it quickly starts to melt away from those areas.
The forecast for today is cloud and possibly some rain later on, but for now there's actually quite a bit of blue sky and it looks like it might be a fine day. Tomorrow should be quite clear and sunny as well with the warm up continuing Wednesday.
Current Official Snow Depths Numbers:
Normal spring lift operations (scheduled): Nagasaka Gondola Yamabiko Four Yamabiko Four No2 * Skyline Link -- open from 28th April until 6th May * Uenotaira Four -- open 28th April until 6th May * Paradise Four -- open 28th April until 6th May
Normal courses open (scheduled): Yamabiko A Yamabiko C Yamabiko D Yamabiko E Uenotaira Paradise Schneider Utopia courses Yunomine A, B Challenge Bunabayashi Rinkan
The Uenotaira Snow Park plans to be open from 28th April until 6th May
Heavy rain and strong winds last night in Minakami. It cleared up a bit this morning but is raining quite heavily again now and it is set to continue for the rest of the day. Bit of low cloud around make visibility a bit close too. Very soft, wet snow up there at the moment.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a blue sky day and Wednesday too is forecast to be fine with the warmest temperatures of the year so far. However it looks like the rain will be back on Thursday and continue through the weekend. Read more ...
