Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 23rd December 2006, 8:29am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow at higher levels
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow to report at town level this morning but apparently a sprinkling of snow at higher levels and both Kagura and Gala Yuzawa reporting snow falling early on. We are told to expect rain or snow today, so here's hoping for the latter!

Up at Naeba the new day-return facility called "N-Plateau" opens for the first time this morning. The facility is at the base of the resort, to the right as you look at the mountain.

With limited choices of places to ski and snowboard, expect places to be very busy over the next few days.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Saturday 23rd December 2006, 8:31am
Weather conditions: Overcast, sunny spells.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Around 3cm of fairly wet snow fell in Furano town yesterday and we got a dusting overnight. It's too warm at the moment - yesterday it got a few degrees above zero and the snow started coming off the roofs of all the houses around here and it only got down to -6 last night in town. It is -1 at the moment and todays predicted high is 2degrees in town. Hope the mountain isn't getting too badly affected, I will go up today and find out.

The forecast is still giving a high likelihood of snow today and tomorrrow, none Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, returning on Thursday.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 23rd December 2006, 9:04am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A slight sprinkling of snow overnight and this morning the clouds seem to be clearing up to make way for a fine day. As this is being written the sun is out from behind some clouds and it looks like it may clear up more. It's a cold morning, with temps down to around -4 outside. It's also looking like we might get some snowfall tonight and into tomorrow.

Below is the current status of the resorts, with the numbers of lifts moving at each part of the resort in brackets.

Sun Valley (2)
Maruike (1)
Giant (1)
Shiga Kogen Ropeway (1)
Bundadaira (2)
Mammoth (3)
Higashidateyama (1)
Nishidateyama (2)
Ichinose Family (2)
Ichinose Diamond (2)
Yakebitaiyama (6)
Okushiga Kogen (ALL)
Kumanoyu (4)
Yokoteyama (6)

The resorts are doing what they can to open up as much area as possible - especially as we are now into a holiday weekend and Christmas is just a few days away - and a few more lifts have started operating. The next few days and the run up to the New Year will more than likely be very busy - everyone is praying for snow to fall to let things really get going.

There will also be 'nighta' operations at Kumanoyu is started from today.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 23rd December 2006, 9:34am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A misty and partly cloudy day in Nozawa. Temperatures on the mountain have dropped to –3C in the last hour or so. The Village is at 0C. Visibility on the mountain is good and conditions are relatively the same as yesterday: 80cm on Yamabiko, 50cm on Uenotaira. The light dusting of snow we had on the mountain most of yesterday only helped keep the snow at it’s current depth.

At this stage the forecast is still for slightly heavier snow tonight (up to 6cm) and higher winds (25km/h) on the mountain.

Last night from around 22:00 it rained in the valley with a brief fall of snow from 23:00. Some of the higher peaks showed signs of fresh snow this morning but the ski areas did not report any new snow.

It started off a blue sky day this morning but cumulus clouds are starting to fill the sky which is a good sign for snow this evening. The forecast also0 shows snow from this evening through to tomorrow morning.

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 23rd December 2006, 10:25am
Weather conditions: Clouds are covering more than 50% of the sky. From the valley bottom (Wada no No/ Mominoki Hotel, 800 m above sea level) the top station of the gondola on Happo One is clearly visible (1,500 m a.s.l.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

The skies are partially overcast in the Hakuba area today with temperatures hoovering around the freezing level. We received only a trace of new snow overnight. Winds are light out of the North West. Visibility is good.

Runs are hard packed with icy patches on Happo One and Hakuba 47. Tsugaike has had very good snow up in the Tsuganomori area and is the best area right now for novice skiers and boarders.

Hakuba Goryu will be holding their "Christmas Night in Hakuba" tonight from 19:30 and will have a gospel choir, Christmas illuminations, a draw give away as well as a fireworks display.

Tomorrow for Christmas Eve day Happo One, Hakuba 47 and Hakuba Goryu will be giving away free lift tickets for those in a Santa get-up or an exceptionally cute reindeer costume. You will not pass as Rudolf with just a red nose!

We are all looking forward to forcasted snow fluries over the Christmas weekend making this another White Christmas in Hakuba.

Hakuba Goryu has opened 2 lower lifts on the Toumi Course and the Iimori Course. Hakuba 47 is almost at a full operational level with the help of snow making. Tsugaike, Happo Kashimayari are all open today with minimal lift operation. Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura, Hakuba Iwatake and Hakuba San Alpina are all on standby and will open when snow conditions allow.

Backcountry Advisory:
Limited observations: Moderate ridge-top winds from the North West have been consistently observed when visibility has allowed. Wind effect was observed from the valley bottom on Korenge Yama's upper slopes (big drifts). No new snow since the 12th of December other than last night's trace.

We are calling the "Hazard" "Moderate" based on limited observations.

A test pit on 2006-12-21, at 1700 metres, south-west exposure, 18 degree slope, at Tsugaike shizen (Hiyodori Mine): height of snow (HS)106 cm. Of note is the 95 to 78 cm layer that is faceting. This is immediately above a 4 cm melt/freeze "pencil" layer. The past few rather clear and cold nights had caused us to suspect this development of faceting. The "foot penetratrion" (PF) was 40 cm. There was a one cm melt/freeze "knife" layer at 60 to 59 cm. The crstals above this were still partially settled and size 2 mm. No shear tests were performed.
Surface hoar, size 6 mm, is now partially protected by the trace of overnight HN. This surface hoar was affected by the sun after it was first observed on the morning of 2006-12-20 at 1,580 m (top of Tsuga Ike Gondola, i.e. Tsuga no Mori). But was still "bright and bold" where the sun did not reach it on 2006-12-21. We will be referring to this layer of surface hoar as the "December 23rd Layer" as that is the date it was covered by new snow.    Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Saturday 23rd December 2006, 10:35am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After yesterday's warmer than average temperatures, winter has returned to Hirafu this morning. The current temperature is -3 in the village. Its snowing quite steadily and looks like we will get at least two more days of this weather - a white Christmas is guaranteed. It didn't snow much overnight but it has set in now and this morning we have had about 5cm fall already here in the village with no doubt much more up high. It will be a great day to ski the trees today.    Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 23rd December 2006, 12:16pm
Weather conditions: Light cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The day started with a fluttering of snow and now the sun has just popped out of the clouds, things seem to brightening up as the cloud cover seems to be loosening up this morning at 11:00am.

The predicted snow fall last night didnt give us any suprises. 1cm was forecast, 1cm is what we got!! Which is a bit of a tease as we usually get a bit more than what is forecast.

A warm 2 degrees at village level, with a fresh breeze. Naeba is in full swing and today brings us the opening of Asagai, though not a very healthy looking gelande this morning - Things are still looking very spring like around here, need I say this is a late start to the season? Nevertheless, the closets are being rummaged, boots and mountain artillery found, while sights are beiing set on Kagura for tomorrow morning.

Here's looking at tonights snow!
