Myoko Now!

Monday 23rd February 2009, 6:49am
Weather conditions: Light snows yielding to clouds only
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Steady snows are falling on Myoko. A nice coating of 10cm have accumulated over the past few hours, smoothing out most of the tracks off-piste. The temps are meant to stay low throughout the day as well, maintaining the consistency of what's fallen.

The light, steady snows should fizzle out by lunchtime, yielding great visibility in the afternoon.

The snowplows never buzzed the village last night, so take care if driving today.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 23rd February 2009, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a cloudy, wet morning here in Nozawa. It was raining earlier this morning but that precipitation has now turned to snow. No new snow is reported for the resort, with the base stable at 240cm on Yamabiko and falling slightly to 190cm for Uenodaira. It is currently 2 degrees in the village and 0 degrees up the top where there is a 5km/h Northeasterly breeze.

The snow showers should continue throughout the day and into tomorrow before warmer conditions on Wednesday will bring rain to most of the resort. The freezing level will not fall below the bottom lifts until at least Sunday so the wet conditions will continue down lower. However, good snow should fall up on Yamabiko and the higher slopes.

All lifts will operate except Mizunashi.

All courses are open except Kurokura and Hachiman.

Weather conditions: Wet snow
New snowfall: --

It is a mild morning with temperatures currently hovering around 0 degrees. I'd like to say it was snowing and I suppose technically it is but it is very wet and more like sleet at times. So a fairly miserable morning right now. If the temperature could fall a little more then we might be on for some fluffier snow so fingers crossed for that. Finer weather forecast for tomorrow and into the week.

Niseko Now!

Monday 23rd February 2009, 9:10am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a week of near continuous snowfalls dropping close to 1.5m of snow today has dawned clear and cold with only light winds. The peak is finally going to open after many days of being closed and will offer incredible views and deep fresh lines. It will be epic!
Yesterday snowed moderately to heavy for most of the day clearing a little late in the day. Later in the evening the cold front associated with the low moving through passed over the region rapidly with strong winds and further snowfalls. Today should remain mostly fine although some cloud and a few snow showers may move through later in the day. Tomorrow is also looking mostly fine with some possible snow later in the day with some further snowfalls to follow on Wednesday. Clearing weather is then expected again on Thursday and Friday as high pressure ridges out over the region from Asia. Over the weekend though another system will affect us bringing further snowfalls into next week.

A word of warning to those heading up the peak today, although avalanche danger has lowered considerably it is still moderate and caution should be taken on steeper convex slopes and near the cornices. Traversing out into the bowls with people above you who may trigger a slide is not a great idea. It's going to be awesome but be careful!

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 360cm
Bottom - 175cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 380cm
Bottom - 190cm

Annupuri:
Top - 420cm
Bottom - 200cm

Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Sorry for the lack of an update yesterday afternoon. It was a fine day for the most part, starting off with blue clouds but ending up grey and hazy as it had cloded over. Midday temperatures rose to around +6 degrees.

It's a bit of a wet and miserable morning. Until a short while ago it was raining, then we had some sleet but as I write this it seems to be turning into something more like proper (but wet) snow. At higher levels Naeba is reporting 5cm while Kagura is reporting 10cm of fresh snow up on the top slopes up there.

It is currently 1 degree and we have sleet/snow forecast for the day into evening, followed by fine weather tomorrow.

Hakuba Now!

Monday 23rd February 2009, 10:06am
Weather conditions: Cloudy with Moderate Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temperature has risen over the past day and with that it brought what we all dread in a winter season and that's rain.

However, all is not lost as we woke up to slightly lower temperatures and light snow fall. In the valley the snow is extremely wet and heavy, so the slopes will have varied conditions today, expect slush with some icy patches at lower elevations and higher up the conditions will be icy in the morning softening up throughout the day.

Snow is forecast into the afternoon, clearing up later this evening leaving some cloud cover, this means the temperature will not drop too drastically. You can expect temperatures to not drop further than -5 degrees, and by Wednesday it's forecast to not be dropping below 0. Winds today are gentle, especially in comparison to yesterday's strong wind gusts, they will pick up a little this afternoon and by tomorrow there will be quite strong winds coming from the South-West.

The slopes will be quieter today and so today you won't need to worry about the crowds, however, the things to watch out for are varying visibility, changing snow conditions, and staying dry. Take regular breaks to allow yourself to dry off throughout the day, and if you find yourself caught in cloud and don't feel confident continuing down the mountain then traverse slowing to the side of the slope, the boundaries are all marked with orange rope, and wait there until visibility improves.

Naeba Now!

Monday 23rd February 2009, 10:15am
Weather conditions: Snowy whit sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Nice big flakes of snow falling from the sky this morning. 10cm of snow on the ground - a little bit heavy which I guess you'd class as wet snow. So yes, things are a little warmer - 0 degrees Celsius in the village.

No Naeba hill visible from the town at the moment but as I type I can see the ghostly image strain to make itself known to all.   Read more ...
