Cloud, fog up top?
It was a lovely 'spring' day yesterday here. (And I definitely have mixed feelings about that!)
This morning there is lots of cloud around and it is (happily) feeling colder and won't warm up as much, but as the forecast stands it does not look like we can expect any snow - and probably can't expect any before we get into March either (and if we do, very slight). Obviously I hope that is wrong but we're just going to have to sit tight and see. But I always say it's never good to wish the days away and as my grandmother always said 'make the most of every day'. So, I'm going to listen to my gran.
It might be more spring conditions than mid-winter at the moment, but there's tons of fun in that too. Hope to see some of you out there today!
Oh yes, sunny skies are forecast for tomorrow.

So yes, yesterday it was fine weather through the day and this morning there's beautiful blue skies above us again. Maybe even more so than yesterday. And... similar forecast for tomorrow.
The season has a long way to go - we don't want "spring" yet. Let's hope there's more winter to come in early March!

Sunny, blue sky, some cloud
Fine weather yesterday and today is starting with lots of blue sky with some cloud. It is feeling somewhat colder this morning which is good to be able to report - keeping those temps down is going to be important. We can probably expect more clearer weather conditions tomorrow too; and, yes, beyond that too.
I'm starting to wonder/worry if we will get any further cm of snow down here at base anyway within this month, and that's a bit of a shocking thing to be even thinking. We are usually still in regular snowfall mode in the last week of February. You can see this clearly by looking at the daily numbers from my reports on the Snowfall Analysis page - hit the big blue button link towards the top of this or just use this.
Maybe March will deliver?

There are no special notices today. It is recommended to avoid riding cracked slopes and in the valley bottoms. Be aware of ice potatoes on the groomed runs. Enjoy the spring conditions, have a good day.

9am update: It's snowing! Wonder how long it'll last...
Beautiful blue skies above Yuzawa yesterday and mild too up to around 8C in town. It felt very spring-like.
This morning it is noticeably more chilly at around 1C and it shouldn't be warming up too much beyond that. Cloudy at the start of the day but there's actually some very (very) light snow starting to fall in higher places. Light snow is on the forecast for later on, we shouldn't expect much. But can always hope to be wrong!
Tomorrow the sun should be out and will be a little warmer once again. Not too much please!
Have a good Saturday wherever you are.

No fresh snowfall to report and it is a cloudy morning in the region.
The forecast tell us to expect some sun this afternoon and through tomorrow with a clear night tonight.
There's still a decent amount of snow on the ski hills, but we're patiently waiting for the next snowfall to freshen things up. Snow conditions are generally a bit wet with better conditions to be found higher up.
Usually, hike up to Mt Nishidaiten by Grandeco is popular in March due to the snow depth being than February but this winter, it is already a good season to hike up. Don't forget to register on the mountain report sheet at the information counter in the Ski Center when you hike up.

Cloudy, blue sky, sun
Morning from Zao.
A few cm to report from the start of the day yesterday with no more this morning and a bit more cloud early this morning but signs of some blue sky and perhaps it will clear up further.
This morning the resort is reporting a temperature of -8C at the top of the resort with temps hovering around 0C at base.
Sunshine is forecast for tomorrow too and possibly the sun will be a regular feature of the coming few days. There's still not much snow there on the forecast I'm afraid.
Let's make do with what we have.
We apologise for the disruption to our normal Zao Now reporting at the moment. Unfortunately this is unavoidable due to some personal circumstances. We are doing what we can to keep things going during this period and hope to get things back to normal soon. Thank you for your patience.

There has been a dusting of 1cm of new snow in the ski village overnight. The day is calm with no wind at base level. Above, there is blue sky with a lot of broken cloud mixed in, but still a very clear day with great views all round. The temperature is currently -1c, so it looks like will will be into the positives again today. Lower slopes are frosty and will soften later in the sun, upper slopes have better snow conditions. It sure looks like spring has set in, and looking ahead for the next 6 days there is no snow on the forecast and mild temperatures will persist.

Appi Kogen Now!
Saturday 23rd February 2019, 9:38am
Mostly sunny skies
Hello from Appi,
Well it’s a crazy Saturday here at Appi. The Red Bull Rampage is underway and we can expect LOTS of falls, fun and fast skiers/boarders heading down the mountain. It kicks off at 3pm and will liven the mountain up for sure.
Cold temperatures and fairly light winds over the weekend coupled with sunshine will certainly help.
Most of the runs are in good shape but a little icy. The groomers are the place to be this weekend.
Planned lift operations & course areas (subject to change due to weather conditions):
- Appi Gondola - Central Quad lift - Central Number 2 - Central Number 3A - Central Number 4 - Central Number 5 - Central Number 6 - Sailer quad - Sailer Number 2 - Vista quad - Nishimori
* All 5 tree run areas should be open as normal when the lift operations allow - register to use them at Plaza 1st Floor
Official groomed snow depth (as reported by resort):
It was a very fine and mild day yesterday, not doing any favours for the snow unfortunately. Some blue sky this morning as well earlier on but it has clouded over and some snow has started falling. No cm to report and we're not really expecting much from it, but it is good to have some colder conditions again. Too much warmth at this stage of the season isn't good.
It does look like we'll be having more sun and milder tomorrow. Fingers crossed not too warm.
The resort is noting that due to less-than-ideal icy conditions, the top Takenokoyama course might be closed at times so you'll need to keep an eye on that if you are heading up there.
Official snow depth:
All lifts plan to be operating apart from the following (some lifts rested on weekdays):
- Daishamen romance pair lift
All courses now open apart from the following:
- Splash Bowl
Planned night-time operations:
- Daily until Sunday 24th March 2019 - 4:00pm until 8:30pm - Lifts operating: Number 5 high speed lift Read more ...
Saturday 23rd February 2019, 10:40am
Another day of gray; a bit of snow falling now; wind picking up.
It is not an exciting day, but it promises a bit of a change ahead (and at least the fog has blown out).
Tomorrow should be sunny and warm and spring-like. And there's even the possibility of heavy snow coming in about a week (the season is not even nearly over yet!)
The snow was soft but things got much too warm yesterday and it froze into an ice sheet overnight.
Got to the top this morning and the wind was so strong that only the middle lift was open at Tenjindaira. Snow is falling but mostly getting blown around. The cat track wasn't too bad, icy and fast. Hiked the ridge and everything over the back is in the same condition from what I can tell, ice burn to use the local name.
Weather is forecast to warm tomorrow, hopefully it softens things up.
