Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 30th May 2021
Friday 23rd November 2018, 7:06am
Cloudy; seems to be clear above low clouds, or clear to the southeast
It's not going to last (I think), but the first real snowfall at base level deserves a report!
The weather report were saying there was a good chance for today, so we got the bamboo poles up (to mark where driveways and obstacles are under the snow, for snow throwing later on, the boats into the garage and (most of) the hydrangeas and bushes tied up. Snow tires are on one of two cars... A normal November first snow, in short.
Things will probably melt over the weekend, but it's always fun when everything turns white for the first time. There's also that sudden drop of the temperature, that smell of the snow. Gets things going for the season that's now less than a month away! Read more ...

Cloud, wet snow
Kagura have announced that they will be opening tomorrow morning, Saturday 24th November.
The 1,300m long (and 50-70m wide) main course will be open; and the Kagura Number 1 lift and Number 1 romance lift will be moving.
First Mitsumata Ropeway at 7:30am!
That's all the info available at the moment... full details tomorrow morning.
Original report from earlier this morning
Good morning from Yuzawa and there is good news to report.
Kagura may not be able to open today as it had hoped to, but it is snowing - and snowing down to town level... and there's a thin layer of snow on the ground. It's rather wet, but it's snow (at the time of writing, might be rain in town as the day goes on) and it is the first down to town level this season.
It will be interesting to see how much falls higher up by the end of today - and I will update you again tomorrow with any further info.
Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions.
Sunday 23rd December 2018 - Hakkai Sanroku - Itsukamachi
Friday 28th December 2018 - Ishiuchi Hanaoka
Saturday 29th November 2018 - Mt Granview
It looks like the small Ludens Yuzawa ski hill will not be operating for the 2018-2019 season. The official reason is 'maintenance' and it is unclear if and when it will re-open. Read more ...

More details tomorrow morning.
Any fresh snowfall since my original report this morning and my upcoming report tomorrow morning will be reported in my report tomorrow morning. I hope that makes sense!
Original report posted early this morning:
Good morning everyone.
I have very good news for you this morning. There is lots of snow on the ground. Oh yes.
I measured just slightly over 25cm of fresh snowfall on the ground which is a very nice showing and of course there will be more than that at higher elevations. Remember, I take my readings close to the base of Hirafu. Snow is still falling (some patches of blue sky showing away from the mountain), and the forecast is generally looking nice and regular.
What all this means for ski lifts is not clear as yet - it's only 7:30am - but I wanted to convey the good news as early as possible. If anything does happen today, I will try to update this report. If not, I will see you tomorrow!
My reports will be posted 'daily' from now until 6th May 2019.
The official planned opening dates of the ski resorts are as follows:
- Niseko Grand Hirafu: as soon as there is enough snow - Niseko Annupuri: as soon as there is enough snow - Niseko Village: Saturday 1st December 2018 - Niseko Hanazono: Saturday 1st December 2018
Actual opening dates will depend on snow conditions. Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Friday 23rd November 2018, 8:01am
The first snowfall down to village!
It is always great to see that first snowfall down to the base and today is the day. It is more than likely not going to last long, but it has arrived. Right now there is just a thin layer at base, but there will be more higher up and hopefully the resort might report on that today and I will be able to give you more info tomorrow.
As I mentioned yesterday, Nozawa has postponed opening so no lifts are planned to be moving this morning. Snow/sleet/(maybe rain) might continue today but clearer skies are likely from the weekend. So this is not destined to be a prolonged bout of snow; we are going to have to wait for that.
Please note that it is always the top section of the resort that opens first, not the whole mountain.
It's not quite down to village level but getting the closest yet. Come on down! It is still snowing higher up but due to ease off.
Four resorts are waiting for more snow to get those first lifts open. The forecast isn't showing much chance of snow in the coming week beyond today, so I think we are going to need to be patient for the moment.
Hello and good morning from Shiga Kogen where... the ski season has started! As has, indeed, the snowboard season! :)
So yes the news this morning is that Kumanoyu is reporting a snow depth of 20cm on the slopes (real snow + artificial snow) and they are operating their Number 2 pair lift. 600m of a 30-50m wide course area is open and they plan to be open daily from now on. Snow making machines will help out in that respect as long as temperatures remain low.
We were thinking we might have more snow than we got overnight - just a few cm on the ground in places - but it's good to see everywhere white once again. It would be good if we could remain white but there isn't much snow on the forecast for the coming week beyond today.
Other ski resorts will start opening (hopefully) from 1st December.
Official snow depths numbers reported by different areas of Shiga Kogen:
Please note that these numbers are the official numbers that ski resorts publish and we check and update them each morning.
Note: this is a backdated report to record snowfall on Friday 23rd November 2018

Aizu Bandai Now!
Friday 23rd November 2018, 11:15am
Hello and welcome to the new 'Aizu Bandai Now' reports.
Actually, this is really just a re-named 'Grandeco Now' as we hope and plan to cover a bit of a wider region with the information we provide this time around. Gambarimasu!
It was a really hot summer in most of Japan meaning that many people came to the Urabandai area to enjoy camping, trekking, canoeing... and generally to escape from the stifling heat.
Last year, there was some snow in the middle of November and some of the ski hills in the region were able to open on 23rd November 2017. This year though, autumn has seemed rather long - as in most of Japan - and the first snowfall only arrived yesterday.
So now that we seemed to have switched into winter mode (and hopefully it will remain so) we are ready for some reporting!
The plan for this report is to bring you fresh snow info and the weather for the Grandeco resort (as per last season on 'Grandeco Now'), and some more photos from other ski resorts in Bandai area such as Nekoma and Alts Bandai.
7cm of new snow has fallen at Grandeco last night and it was still snowing this morning but cloudy at base just now.
Some ski hills were hoping to open today but there is not enough snow for that to happen, so we are on standby and waiting for more snow.
The next report will be when it next snows or when some lifts get going.
We might have to make a few technical adjustments to these reports as they get going -- if you see something odd going on... we're working on it!
This is a backdated report to record snowfall from 23rd November

Good afternoon from Naeba.
25 days later than last year, we have the first snowfall of the season here in the base areas. Just a bit around base areas and the village, more as you get higher up of course.
Autumn has been very colourful but it is good to see some white. Everyone is of course hoping that the upcoming season will deliver in terms of lots of regular (and heavy) snowfall. Fingers crossed.
Naeba plans to open for the season on Saturday 8th December.
Kagura was hoping to open today but has delayed due to lack of snow.
Just in as I am writing this: ---- Kagura will open from tomorrow, Saturday 24th November! :)
The Yuzawa Now report will be updated (probably/mostly) daily from now, so please check that over the next few weeks before Naeba gets going. Read more ...

Good evening all!
I am actually away from Zao at the moment but my trusted friend has filled me in on around 4-5cm of fresh snowfall in the village area early this morning along with a temperature of around -1C.
Not a whole lot more to expect in the coming week as temperatures look set to rise a bit and there might be quite a bit of sunshine.
I'll update you again when there is more snow to report. Read more ...

Yesterday there was some light snow falling through the day but it didn't really accumulate on the ground. Today was a bit better with colder temperatures allowing a build up of around 5cm in Kitanomine. The good news is that it seems the resort will open tomorrow as planned. The open courses will be the upper part of the Sailer Course and Shirakaba Course, which are around 750-800m in length each. Great to see the season kick off on schedule. Read more ...
