Mostly sunny at the moment
I got the call to help at a ski race yesterday (actually, I was putting off saying yes - it’s a long day out there watching gates!), so an early report today.
No new reports other than Lotte Arai, and they have not indicated closings/opeings for the day yet.
But it is sunnier already; there is a lot of frost everywhere (beautiful patterns on car windows), and there may have been some snow yesterday high up, but nothing at base, so that’s what we’ll report for the new snowfall.
Lotte Arai Resort: 413cm, 2°; Kokenashi Lift closed; Exciter and Discovery permanently closed; Be Free, Mamushigaeshi, Legendary, Rindou Upper and Rindou Lower closed; Ohkenashi Bowl, FK, North Bowl, Funaishi-zawa, Happy Place and Benzaku-zawa in the avalanche-controlled areas open; others closed (see website for updates); closing May 6
I wanted to post an early report this morning - just check out the webcam images below. Stunning views.
There is an impressive low lying sea of clouds over the village, but beautiful clear blue skies above. As we have been expecting, we're surely going to be in for a treat of a beautiful day today and indeed over the coming run of days too with sunny conditions due to continue into late week.
Hope you can be here to enjoy these (very much) spring conditions.
Too early for resort updates this morning but things will surely be open as scheduled.
Ski resort information on Friday 23rd March 2018 (at time of writing):
Some fresh snow being reported by the resort on upper slopes again during the day yesterday, and that may well be the last of it for this season as we have a run of clear and sunny days lined up over the coming week. Warmth too particularly mid week.
There's an early morning low 'sea of clouds' hanging over the valley but that should be gone pretty soon and making way for clear skies and a high temperature of around 8C at base later in the day.
Time to fully accept spring, embrace it and have some fun in what we have left. Which is still over 2.5m of snow depth on the upper courses of the resort. How about that then!
Saturday 24th March 2018
Fresh snowfall since yesterday (as reported by the resort):
Not much else to say other than --- clear skies due every day now until at least Thursday.
'Planned closing dates' information for resorts in Shiga Kogen. Basically:
- all ski areas in Shiga Kogen plan to be at least part open until the end of March; - a bunch of resorts will be open on specific dates (usually weekends and Golden Week) once we get into April; - the remaining resorts will be open daily until 6th May and beyond that (they will close when there's not enough snow left to ski or board!)
Once we get to the end of March, I will add specific lift operation plans for the ski resorts that remain open during the months of April and May.
Planned closing date information for the ski areas around Shiga Kogen. Note that all are subject to change.
The sun is out. There are blue skies. It's a beautiful morning. If the forecasts are correct, there's a lot more of this in the coming week as well. And those forecasts still show a steady warming up as well into the middle of next week.
If you are in for some spring skiing or snowboarding, now is a good time.
Lifts and course info:
Most course areas remain open.
The following lifts have now closed for the season:
- Zao Paradise Number 3 pair - Diamond Number 1 pair - Zao Kokutai - Ryuzan pair - Karamatsu pair
A cracker of an early morning here with clear blue skies and sunshine. Is that a slight chance of some light snow overnight tonight on the forecasts? I do believe it might be, though there seems to be a chance of some rain lower down. Nothing major though.
A bit of a warm up is expected in the coming week along with quite a but of clear skies and sun.
Official snow depth:
Planned lift operations, Friday 23rd (subject to change):
- APPI Gondola - Central quad - Central number 2 lift - Central number 3 lift A - Central number 4 lift - Central number 5 lift - Central number 6 lift - Sailer Gondola - Sailer quad - Vista quad - Nishimori lift
Note: The Sailer Gondola, Central Number 4 lift and Vista quad are usually rested on normal weekdays Read more ...
Geto Kogen Now!

Clear skies, just some cloud
Morning from Geto Kogen as we enter the last weekend of March.
It was cloudy yesterday for the most part and this morning we have clearer skies but also a bit of wind blowing about. Fine weather is on the forecast though.
It is an awesome spring morning here in Furano with blue sky all around and not a breath of wind down in the village. Currently the temperature is hovering around 0c, but it is forecast to head up to +6c by mid afternoon. With full sun hitting the slopes and warm temperatures, it is likely to get slushy later in the day. Read more ...

Good morning from Grandeco.
There was a slight big of snowfall yesterday but it was just a slight covering and it is a beautiful morning with blue skies around the region this morning.
It is warm and the sunshine is going to be very strong today.
The snow conditions are like a sorbet so waxing is recommended today.
The spring school holidays are starting so there will be a lot of families with children around.
