Furano Now!

Monday 25th December 2006, 8:14am
Weather conditions: Snowing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It snowed for most of Sunday but at a slower pace than Saturday, we recieved around 5cm of good dry powder in town and around 10cm on the mountain. The temperature has been getting steadily colder, it is around -9 here this morning.

Yesterday was a fantastic day on the mountain - powder everywhere! It was a bit busier than normal, I guess because it's the weekend before Christmas, I say busy but I'm only comparing it to a normal day here when it feels so quiet you wonder how the resort manages to make any money!

Saturday night saw the opening of the Winter Village and Snowdome at the base of Kitanomine Gondola. It was a fun party with delicious hot food stalls, an outside onsen, bonfire, fireworks, tea ceremony, and drinking from ice glasses in the snowdome bar. The bar is open everynight from now on and the other events will be happening every Saturday.

Happy Christmas from Furano, I hope Santa bought you everything you dreamed of!!

Niseko Now!

Monday 25th December 2006, 8:41am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Merry Xmas to you all.

Unfortunately Santa didn't have any fresh snow in his sack for today, but he has a box full of blue sky and perfect weather. Youtei-san is overseeing today's festivities, so get the camera out and get on the hill for some Chrissy snaps, it's not often you'll get conditions like this here.

The tips for today are to get out early, get stuck into the groomers and maybe look for some freshies through the trees, then settle down to a tasty Christmas lunch and open your pressies. If you're in Japan, I hope you've put in your order for KFC, the traditional Xmas feed.

This weather is looking to continue for a few more days, and is looking to get colder with some precipitation on the way for New Year's Eve.

Yesterday's riding was great, with some patches of knee-deep powder to be found, and with a bit more searching today there will be more to be found.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 25th December 2006, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a beautiful sunny morning here in Yuzawa. While cold early on (0 degrees as of 8am), it will probably warm up to around +8 or +9 later on in the day. Tomorrow looks set to be rainy (and unfortunately probably too mild for snow) and the snowmen on the forecast are lined up for Friday and the weekend. It MUST snow then, surely....

Resort operations remain the pretty much the same as the last few days... the choices are Kagura (which is all open) and parts of Naeba and Gala Yuzawa.

We haven't got a particularly white Christmas this time round unfortunately, but wherever you are all the very best from Snow Japan.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 25th December 2006, 9:20am
Weather conditions: Sky: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful blue bird Christmas day here in Hakuba. No snow over nightto make it white in the valley but the crystal clear views of the mountains today almost make up for that. There is no wind this morning and the visibility is excelent. Sharpen those edges get up top and carve the piste in the morning and carve the Turkey this afternoon.

Runs are hard packed and man made snow just keeps getting pumped out.

Have a Merry Christmas

Backcountry Advisory:
With limited upper level observations we are calling the "HAZARD" "Moderate".
Discussion: high winds yesterday had the Goryu Lift Company cease operation of their upper lifts. The wind was coming in light to moderate gusts in the Hime Kawa valley floor. The height of new snow (HN) observed at 0700 hrs. at 830 m a.s.l. (metres above sea level) was a trace (i.e. less than one centimetre). The height of snow on the ground (HS) at the same observation site (830 m a.s.l. in the Hira Kawa valley, right across fromn the Hakuba 47 lift base) was a trace. The air temperature (Ta) was -1C. This morning from the upper lift accessable terrain there were reports of light snow fall (S -1: snow falling so as to accumulate less than one centimetre an hour), high winds from the North-west ("high" winds usually mean more than 40 kilometres per hour and at this speed drifts will form. With the foot penetration (PF) of 40 cm observed three days ago at 1,700 m a.s.l. on a South-west forested exposure (Hiyodori Mine) there is plenty of snow available for transportation. I would suspect that soft slabs are forming at and above tree-line and maybe below, depending on the aspect. The temperature was reported as "not very cold". Wind chill is another bag of snakes altogether.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 25th December 2006, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful fine Christmas day in Nozawa! The sun is shining and it’s a great day to hit the slopes. The piste bases are still at there previous depths of 80cm and 50cm at Yamabiko and Uenotaira respectively. The temperatures are still quite cold with Yamabiko sitting at –6C and Uenotaira dropping down to a chilly –8C. Even the top of the village is now at –6C. According to some of the boarders and skiers who came down late yesterday there is still plenty of fun to be had on the higher red runs.

The forecast is still for rain Tuesday and now also for Wednesday with the possibility of light snow on Wednesday night.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 25th December 2006, 9:31am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's one of those very cold but amazing blue sky mornings. No new snow to report overnight unfortunately but the roads are very icy this morning so care needs to be taken.

Official snow depths at the resorts currently ranges from 20cm to 60cm and so as you can see this isn't quite the snowy Christmas that was planned... people are keeping their eye on the weather forecast and hoping for huge amounts of snow to come soon. It is looking likely that the next real snowfall will be later this week.

All that remains to be said today is.... happy christmas!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Monday 25th December 2006, 10:52am
Weather conditions: light whispy clouds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A Very sunny day today, a bit of light whispy cloud high in the sky. The temperature is sitting on freezing, so it will surely warm up during the afternoon. Both of the Naeba gondolas are in full swing and the slopes are not as busy as yesterday as a lot of people have gone back to work.

Not much else to report on really, apart from the difference in conditions from this time last year when 2 meters of snow fell in 2 days , everyone was out trying to clear that, then another 2 metres followed straight after!   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Monday 25th December 2006, 10:55am
Weather conditions: blue sky with some high cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Merry Christmas. Too bad it is not a white Christmas!

Another blue sky day in Minakami with warm temperatures of around 9 deg C. There are a few wisks of cirrus clouds in the sky, but no wind at all. It looks like the noon temperature may rise to around 12 deg C.

There is precipitation forecast from tomorrow afternoon until Friday with snow predicted for later in the week. It is most probable that the higher ski areas of Tenjin, Houdaigi and Minakami Kogen will get some decent snow over the next 4 days but the lower lying areas may get more rain.
