Hakuba Now!

Friday 25th January 2008, 8:26am
Weather conditions: Snowing over the Alps, blue sky and sunny in the east.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Today is the morning you wanna go riding. Still some low cloud over the Alps from about 1600m but the sky East of Goryu/47 and Happo is blue and the suns out. Action everywhere as everyone wants to be on the mountain especially with the minimal lift action in the later part of yesterday everyone wants to be up top first. There was some light snow from yesterday that stopped during the night so snow should have settled some since yesterday. As noted yesterday the fresh snow was slipping all over the place so be careful where you go in search of powder until things have stabilised.

Snow is still forecast through today and tomorrow so its possible the clouds will come in as the day progresses. Any change in weather will be followed by an update here. Still waiting on snow base updates from patrol so that too will be updated later on today.

There were some huge winds last night so no doubt there will be some hard blown areas and some large pockets of powder on lee-ward slopes. Be very careful on these lee-ward slopes as bonding will not have occurred with the old snow layer.

Back Country Travel Advisory (as at Jan 22):

New backcountry advisory from the team doing the Canadian Level I Avalanche Course.

Strong to extreme winds in all areas today - there was 30-50 cms of new snowfall overnight, lee-ward slopes will be much more loaded due to wind. Multiple size one to two off-piste slab avalanches have been witnessed slipping easily on the crust from two days ago and these could possibly crack down to the rain crust of January 12th causing very large slab avalanches. Travel out of marked ski areas is very strongly discouraged. New snow is sliding easily even on-piste on the sides of the runs. Be careful even on-piste in all ski areas.

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Alpine: Extreme
Tree-line: Extreme
Below tree-line: Extreme

Furano Now!

Friday 25th January 2008, 8:41am
Weather conditions: beautiful morning of seeing across the valley.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday's storm turned out to be disappointing with minimal snow falling here in Furano. Other resorts in the valley particularly Tomamu got dumped on with Tomamu receiving close to 50cm in 12 hours.

The conditions here yesterday were windy and cold, a true storm day, however not a lot of snow actually feel. The pick this morning will be panorama, with windblown pockets.

Last night's performace of Kanashibetsu by the Furano Theatre Group was another very successful event. Each Thursday international visitors qualify for free tickets, so if you are around on a Thursday I highly reccommend you see the play.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 25th January 2008, 8:52am
Weather conditions: Snow and moderate wind
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There has been more snow overnight - Kagura is reporting 60cm of snow since yesterday. There was about 20-30cm of new snow on the tops of cars this morning in the town area.

The winds aren't quite as strong as they were yesterday, though the current conditions are still affecting operations in some resorts - Kagura is opening only the Mitsumata area of the resort today (or at least early on) and thinking about opening the Kagura gondola, depending on the conditions as the morning progresses.

Gala Yuzawa is able to open today as well as other resorts and so things are a bit more normal this morning.

The snow is still falling and coming down fast at the moment and it's a cold -4 degrees. Snow is forecast for all of today, all tomorrow and into early next week. Whether it will remain like this is another matter, but we are certainly getting some good cms of new snow at the moment and conditions will be excellent out there.

We will update the page this evening.

PM update:

It has been snowing all day and since this morning there was about 20cm of snow on top of the car this evening. It has also been cold and the winds, while less than yesterday, have been blowing the snow around again. It's around -3 at the moment.

Kagura are now saying that they have had a meter of snow over the last two days. Nice!

(Official snow depths are taking a while to catch up with the snow, so that's why they aren't moving as fast as the snow is falling!)

It's not going to stop any time soon either - another 10-25cm on the official forecast for Yuzawa before the lifts open tomorrow morning, and the forecast remains "snow" all the way through tomorrow into Sunday. They have been known to be wrong, of course, but expect those conditions tomorrow. Would be good if it could ease off a little so we can all go out and enjoy it, but you'll hear no complaints from here!

You can also expect some very nice powder snow conditions as well - expect peak conditions.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 25th January 2008, 9:00am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is still snowing heavily in Nozawa this morning. It is difficult to get an accurate idea of how much has fallen in the village, as a lot has been blown around by the wind. However there is 10cm of fresh stuff on our doorstep which has fallen since 10pm last night, and it is fairly safe to say everywhere got plenty in the last 24 hours. Visibility is poor. Mercifully, the siberian wind which stopped all action on the top half of the mountain from lunchtime yestrday has relented a little, and it should at least be a bit more pleasant today - it would be difficult to get worse! Both the gondolas are running, as is the top Yamabiko lift. It is bitterly cold - minus 11 plus considerable wind chill. Wrap up very warm today.

The forecast is for wind and snow to continue to drop off during the day. Let's hope for some serious clearing up so that we can actually enjoy all this snow.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Friday 25th January 2008, 9:30am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, wind and snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The wind shut the top lifts all day yesterday. It snowed, the wind blew, the sun came out, best skiing was mostly on the groomed but there was some wind blown powder in the trees. The only crowds were on the King Gondola. The Ace thremometer read minus 9 at noon. We woke up to a cold snowy morning with 5 to 15cm in the Village with winds once again closing the top lifts this morning.

The low pressure system has moved on to the western Pacific Ocean and the boundary between the high and low has passed us now. It appears the high pressure system will dominate for several days until the middle of next week. The winds on the northern Sea of Japan have died down a bit but look like they will pick up again tomorrow morning and sustain until Sunday. There is still a bit of moisture in the local weather system so it wouldn't be surprising if we get light to moderate snowfalls for the rest of today and possibly tomorrow. It seems like a cruel joke that despite the deep low that we experienced over the last couple of days, there wasn't a lot of moisture at the corresponding times. Let's hope the high that is dominating at present might draw down some cold continental air today and tomorrow.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 25th January 2008, 11:39am
Weather conditions: overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The wind was blowing hard all day yesterday and throughout the night. This morning the snow and wind continues with varying snow depths throughout the valley; 30cm in exposed areas and up to 1.5m in areas of wind deposits.

The snow and strong winds are expected to continue tomorrow but should start to subside by Sunday. The Tenjin ropeway is not operating, my recommendation would to check out Houdaigi or White Valley this weekend, both which should have a lot of on piste powder.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 25th January 2008, 11:40am
Weather conditions: Snow + fair strong winds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's another mid-winter snowy and windy day here in Shiga Kogen - the blizzard like conditions continue. Perhaps not as severe as yesterday, but it is another day when many people might decide to sit in an onsen rather than be out on the slopes that are open.

Another 10-20cm of snow overnight, though the official numbers don't seem to be reflecting the amount of new snow that we have had over the last few days - there will be a lot of deep powder out there at the moment for those brave enough to venture out and find it.

Once again limited operations due to the conditions (mainly the strong winds), but if the winds do get weaker later on then more might well open up. Having said that, it is snow forecast for the rest of the day and into the weekend and so if you are planning on being in Shiga Kogen be prepared for those conditions!

No nighta planned for tonight.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 25th January 2008, 11:49am
Weather conditions: stormy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow, a lot of it. There's been about 40cm since the last report and due to strong winds the snow transportation (drifting) has been quite phenomenal. The winds are still gusting and so all the gondolas are closed today. Snow is everywhere, the roads are hazardous though they are being regularly cleared.

Most places on route 17 are snowed in at the edges of the road due to the usual snow clearing on the road which along with the drifted snow creates side walls thus most drivers can not pull off of the road adequately - so be careful if your driving up tonight please.

Kagura is only part open today - with the Mitsumata area being the only area with the lifts moving.
