Cloudy, hint of sun even in some areas
We are being treated to a good old late season blast of winter at the moment.
Snow fell for the day yesterday and there has been another 5+cm since last night. I think that it is safe to say that we can add at least another 20cm to add to what I posted yesterday morning, and there is certainly going to be more than that up on the mountains. Yesterday at the end of the day, for example, Kagura reported +30cm during the day, and this morning Maiko Snow Resort are saying that there is a fresh layer of 30cm. Kagura is also reporting this morning another 30cm of fresh (I hope it's not the same lot they reported yesterday evening!)
Whatever, these are very fine numbers indeed and the people lucky enough to be here today and tomorrow should be in for something of an unexpected treat.
It has been snowing lightly this morning still, but the last of the snowfall (this time anyway) should be falling this morning, with clearing up conditions expected. There's even a slight hint of sun shining through the clouds in places just now.
This snowfall might well be the last fresh hurrah of the season - if you can, do try to get to enjoy it.
Tomorrow onwards it's going to start warming up again and a lot of sun is forecast daily into next week.
Ahhh late March, don't you just love it (....when it gives us snow!)
According to the trusty resort folk, some upper areas of the mountain have been on the receiving end of up to 50cm of snow in the last day! Just think how warm it was last week and then re-read that. Mad.
Still a decent amount lower on the mountain as well giving us a refresh we can only have hoped for.
The sun will be back with us by tomorrow so we need to make the most of these fresh conditions while they last. Expect it to warm up by the weekend.
Fresh snow to report since yesterday (reported by resort):
Niseko base 6am: -2C, 20cm of humid snowfall in the last 12 hours. Moiwa data n/a. Annupuri 1000m snowpack 345cm. Hirafu1000m -7C, heavy wind. Peak data: N23.3m/s, -7.3C. Coastal data: Benkei cape ENE11m/s, Kamui cape ENE5m/s, 1019hPa, 3.3m.
Isobars are close together, generating heavy wind above 800m. Snowdrifts are developing in leeward slopes and gullies. Looking at the snowfall and various other data, the avalanche risk is high today, especially in alpine steep slopes. Peak gates will be closed. Do not duck ropes to step out of bounds. Wind and snow will clam down soon, but the hazards will remain high for a while. Most avalanche accidents are caused by snowdrift slabs sliding during or just after storms. Remember this term as a common sense and most accidents can be avoided. Climax (ground) avalanche risk from 1100m area is also rising. Stay away from valley bottoms. The snow along the course and in the trees is in good shape. Beware of hidden cracks and holes and they might have been covered and hard to notice from above. Have a nice day.
Strong winds are hitting the resort right now and it is really gusty around the base area. The winds will gradually reduce during the day and should be light by the evening. Cloud is sitting just above the peaks of the resort so visibility is good and there may be some snow flurries during the day. Temperatures today are significantly colder than yesterday. The sub zero overnight temperatures mean that the slopes will be firmer than yesterday especially during the morning. Read more ...

The snow let up by this morning, with the sun now shining on Myoko.
We saw a few lightning flashes last night—something that can mean pretty heavy snowfall—and Akakan is reporting an additional 50cm, more than we got at base level (let's add on 20cm today, just to be conservative). Very strong winds earlier in the day; snow was really flying off the high ridges around 8 am. A little more settled now, although the wind is now coming from the east down in town, while the Coast Guard tells me it's form the northwest on the coast—signs the high pressure is moving in.
It continued to snow heavily through the day yesterday and all the way through the night aaannndd it’s still snowing this morning.
It looks like it will stop snowing possibly later in the afternoon, but currently every run will be a fresh one.
It is around -4 degrees with weak to moderate winds currently.
All lifts are running as planned.
Official snow depths:
Naeba: 260cm Kagura: 370cm
30cm Naeba 30cm Kagura
This Naeba Now report started updating for the 2014/2015 season on 31st January 2015. As such, the 'observed snowfall season' numbers shown at the bottom of the report will only reflect data from that date onwards. Last day of the snow season currently planned for Wednesday 6th May.
Operating through the year (for general tourism) Sky Cable Chuo Ropeway Zao Ropeway
Heavy snowfall overnight and though it is still snowing, the accumulation has taken a break which is good for those of us who need to move it.
85cm reported up top and Tenjin is closed due to high wind.
At the lower elevations winds are moderate and the snow quality is excellent. The gondola will hopefully get moving this afternoon but the chances of the cat track opening today are zero. Tomorrow should be very good though as the snow appears to have largely abated and is forecast to finish by tonight before slightly warmer temperatures tomorrow.
If the forecast comes to pass, the upper elevations should be frozen all day though we shall see.
Planned closing dates of ski resorts in Minakami (subject to change):
Until 29th March Norn Minamaki Okutone Snow Park White Valley
Until 30th March Minakami Kogen
Until 5th April Minakami Kogen Ski Resort Minakami Hodaigi
