Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 26th April 2006, 9:14am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow today, yet. The snow subsided fairly quickly yesterday and left only about 5 cm at the top of the resorts, which for this time of year, is a pleasent surprise. It is sunny now with increasing clouds throughout the day. Temperatures remaining under the 10 deg.C mark today, 4 deg.C in the valley now and 1 deg.C at the top of the resorts. The snow is still holding so get out there if you can, before the hoards of hard core Golden Week skiers begin to arrive this weekend.

Sunshine hitting southern slopes yesterday had been creating multiple risks, including Size 2 loose avalanches. And now with more weight on it from the new snow, will not help the situation. Use caution when traversing under southern slopes. New snow ranges from 0cm to 65-70cm in wind-scoured areas and now increasing again. Generally loose slides are in the upper twenty centimetres of the new snow.

Natural avalanches possible, human-triggered avalanches probable.
Be increasingly cautious in steep terrain.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 26th April 2006, 9:22am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well Monday had it all with heavy snow falling in the morning and later turning to sleet then rain. Up high on the mountain though it was all snow. Yesterday was cloudy for much of the day and some rain moved through the village overnight. This morning though has dawned clear and should be a lovely day. Tomorrow more rain is expected later in the day.

Finally for the farmers the snow is starting to lose it's grip on the valley floor. The mountain though still has complete cover top to bottom with a little fresh snow up high.
For the snow to last this deep down low till the end of April is pretty unusual but for those few people here skiing it's all good.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 26th April 2006, 9:41am
Weather conditions: Overcase, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a mixed bag with heavy rain in the morning and then the sun out at times later in the day.

Temperatures were down last night and even below freezing higher up but they should be up to around 9 or 10C by the middle of today. It has started off a bit overcase but the sun is making an appearance at the moment.

The snow on the rice fields in Yuzawa and the area is slowly melting away - some rice fields now actually visible for the first time in a long time. Having said that in some places there is still a fair amount of snow piled up, and there is certainly a lot left high up at Kagura.

Yesterday we took some photos of the bottom Chuo area of Ishiuchi Maruyama (see photos), you can see just how much is still left resorts down at town level.

Planned closing dates:
7th May - Pine Ridge Kandatsu;
7th May – GALA Yuzawa;
7th May – Naeba;
7th May - Tashiro;
28th May – Kagura/Mitsumata.   Read more ...
