Zao Now!

Saturday 26th November 2011, 10:00am
Weather conditions: Sun, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I bring good news this morning -- Zao is open!

As the slopes have a bit of snow on them and enough to slide around on the upper slopes, part of the resort has opened this morning.

Part of Utopia and Chuo and Paradise is open serviced by the Utopia No 1 pair lift, Chuo No 1 pair lift and the Paradise pair lift.

There's just about enough snow and it is patchy so keep that in mind if you want to get some early slides in.

Weather wise - quite a bit of blue sky as well as cloud and generally looks like it will be a fine day. In fact things look set to warm up over the coming days and so we can't be expecting more snow in the coming week.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Saturday 26th November 2011, 10:37am
Weather conditions: fairly heavy cloud cover with patches of blue
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday mornings heavy snowfall eased off through the day as expected and into the night and Niseko woke to partially clear and sunny skies this morning. however with all of the accumulated snowfall of the past week Hirafu opened the Ace family pair lift this morning and people wasted no time in getting out there.

The predicted warmer weather will hit this evening, in fact is already in evidence as can be seen by the dripping rooftops around the village, although it doesn't look to be as warm as the forecasts were suggesting a few days back with highs of 5 degrees through Monday. Today will almost certainly see the last snowfall until next week though with Sunday morning seeing rain showers. Conditions will get pretty sloppy out there.

On that note, the current weather conditions make for some pretty hazardous driving, I saw 2 cars slide off the road on the way in from Kutchan this morning. The first few weeks of winter are always a bit dicey as people find their winter driving legs so please take care!   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Saturday 26th November 2011, 13:53pm
Weather conditions: Snow Flurries
New snowfall: 20cm
Snow depth: 70cm
We finally got our fair share of the snow yesterday afternoon when the sky opened up and dumped a good 15cm of powder everywhere. Just when I thought it was safe to shovel off my driveway, we got another 5cm overnight. The flakes are still flying outside, but it's warmed up to around freezing, so there shouldn't be too much more additional accumulation.

The big news today is that for the first time this season, Sailer Course is open from top to bottom! After all the winter weather this week, we're sitting on 70cm of powder in the Furano Zone. Things toward the foot of the mountain aren't as thick and fluffy as the snow on the top, so please exercise a degree of caution when heading down the lower half, but that is to say nothing of all the untouched powder troves that await the first turns of the year.

Things should stay cloudy and cold throughout the day, but look for a brief warm-up tomorrow afternoon when both snow and a chilly rain are in the forecast for Sunday.

Today is definitely the day to get out on the mountain.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 26th November 2011, 17:04pm
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies for the most part
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good news today folks as Hakuba 47 and Goryu have actually opened up at 11:30am this morning.

The Line E high speed pair lift has been operating at Hakuba 47 since 11:30am, servicing the upper part of Route 8 course at the resort and signalling the start of the official season in Hakuba. Tomorrow they plan to be open the same with tickets costing 2,400 yen for adults and 1,250 yen for children. The resort has been reporting 35-40cm.

On the other side of the hill - and indeed the way up to the 47 course via their gondola - Hakuba Goryu have also opened their upper Panorama course. The Hakuba Goryu telecabin gondola and the Alps No1 pair lift have been operating up there so together with the 47 lift that is the still fairly small area that is open. But it is a start and some happy looking people up there.

Today has seen some lovely fine weather in Hakuba as well - a few small bits of cloud here and there every so often but mostly fine clear blue skies and a high of around 7 degrees in the village, so quite mild too.

Tomorrow should see similarly fine conditions - and warmer. It might get into double digit temperatures down in the village.    Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Saturday 26th November 2011, 20:15pm
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A nice dusting of snow overnight, with a good band of snow in the trees from about 1,100 to 1,500 meters. It probably won't last long, though; it was a lovely, sunny day today, and there isn't much promising in the days ahead.

The resorts, of course, will get going as soon as there is enough snow. The official (planned) openings are:

Akakura Kanko Ski Area (Akakan): December 17
Akakura Onsen Ski Area: mid-December
Ikenotaira Ski Area: December 17
Myoko Suginohara: December 23
Madarao Kogen Ski Area: Pre-open December 10-11; full open December 16
Seki Onsen Ski Area: no official date posted for this year (December 1 last season)
Tangram Madarao: December 17

These dates are when they officially open, of course; if there's no snow, they won't be opening; if there's heavy snow, many will open earlier. We'll keep you posted!
