Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 26th May 2019
Wednesday 27th February 2019, 7:21am
There is a light dusting of snow across the village, and although only 1cm at base level, I would expect around 5cm at the top of the resort. It is a colder start to the day, currently -9c, and temperatures will rise up to around -2c by midday. Plenty of cloudy lies above but that is expected to clear and it should be a sunny afternoon. There is no significant snow forecast for the rest of the week.

Good morning from Yuzawa.

Fine weather again yesterday and this morning it's more overcast but bright and sunny with a high of around 6C forecast.

Blue sky and cloud
Good morning and what about this...
3cm of fresh snow has gathered on the ground overnight. Hurray!
Hopefully that will mean slightly more than that at higher elevation. I think we're going to have to take these fairly small offerings when we can now; there is little sign that we are going to be getting much more. As things look right now anyway.
Blue skies, some sunshine and some cloud hanging around. It should be a fine morning. All should be open.
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain base 6am: -6℃, 3cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -7.2℃, W4.34m/s, cornice and snowdrifts developments. Annupuri1120m snow depth 250cm, -10.3℃ at 1000m. Hirafu peak: -10℃, swowdrifts developing. Hirafu1000m: -10.1℃, N2.5m/s. Niseko Village Mizuno no Sawa: -8.59℃, WSW4.4m/s, 150cm snow depth at base. Kutchan weather station: -8℃, NNE0.6m/s, 154cm snow depth. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NW9m/s, Kamui cape WSW8m/s, 1021hPa, 1.3m waves.
A snowstorm picked up around 8pm yesterday, making cornices and snowdrifts up to 30cm thickness develop in leeward slopes above 800m elevation. The avalanche risk in knolls and slopes under cornices is moderately high. Some gusts are still blowing in higher elevation. All gates are scheduled to open, please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. A layer of new snow has blanketed most slopes, but not deep conditions. Thin surface slab slides from Feb 26th layer should be considered in open steep slopes. Ride one by one, do not cut across slopes and stay away of valley bottoms. The mountain is back to winter today. Have a nice day.

Thin cloud, overcast, bit of blue sky
Good morning from Hakuba.
Some clearer skies in the middle of the day yesterday before more cloud coming in later in the afternoon, though conditions were variable depending on where you were (as is often the case, of course).
This morning it's kind of overcast with some thin cloud and some blue sky starting to appear - perhaps we'll see some more of that as the morning moves on. It is quite cold again early on with a high of about +4 forecast for the village later on.
Tomorrow there is a chance of precipitation at times during the daytime, and it might turn out to be light rain or snow at different times and different elevations. Keep cold please!
There's increasing talk around town now about just how long the season will be able to stretch to. Happo-one, Tsugaike Kogen, Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47 all plan to be open until the end of Golden Week on Monday 6th May. It is sometimes a struggle to get there but they are very good at making use of the snow that remains in the upper areas of ski resorts. That is still over two months off and obviously the lower slopes are not going to be lasting too much longer if the current weather pattern continues. This season the 10 (!) days up until 6th May are holidays so I imagine the ski resorts would very much like to be able to see it through until then.
All I can say is: more snow please.
And, gambare! I think they are going to have a challenge on their hands.
Ski resort information on Wednesday 27th February 2019: The below info is checked manually each morning and believed to be correct at time of report. All ski resorts in the area are currently open. Any further resort specific notes made below.
Lots of cloud this morning with the sun trying to break through in place but as of 8:30am it's on the greyer-darker side of things. Temperature is currently -1C and a high of around +4C forecast later in the day.
Tomorrow? Well, there's both light rain and light snow on the forecasts. It might end up snowing early on and turning to rain down in the village. Or something different. Let's see where we are in the morning.

Fine, some cloud
And I bring good news this morning. There was no snow on the forecast yesterday, but this morning there is 3-4cm of fresh snow at Grandeco base. And not only the Urabandai area, but also on the south side of Mt. Bandai which has a thin covering of fresh snow this morning. The mountains look freshly white again which is of course great to be able to report, even if it isn't a significant amount.
It is a bright sunny morning but the weather will probably change by the evening and there is a chance of more snowfall tonight, according to the forecast. Fingers crossed.

Thin cloud, sun
Another fine day yesterday and this morning there's more of that thin cloud around but the sun is casting shadows down on the mountain. Once again we might see more of the sun during the day but we are hoping for something falling from the skies tomorrow - and hopefully in the form of some light snow. Let's see where we stand come tomorrow morning...

The quiet before the..rain? snow?
It is very still, with a lot of dark clouds starting to come in from the south. The barometer is still pretty high, so we'll watch that and wait for the fall (and be ready for precipitation). The freezing level just don't look like it's going to come down very much.
The snowpack is definitely going down; the walls along the roads have moved back away from the road surface. The national news just predicted a warm March, so not much positive news for those of us who still want some more white stuff!
