Niseko Now!

Sunday 27th January 2008, 8:18am
Weather conditions: Intermitent snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another stormy day yesterday. The wind blew, it was cloudy, then the sun would come out and then it would start snowing. We had all conditions but rain. It was cold and windy on top but the lifts kept running all day. Groomed runs were a mixed bag of powder and windblown hard packed.

There is a deepening low pressure system to our north which looks like it may defy the previous charts and maintain it's position to our north, then slowly move back inland from Kamchatka over the next couple of days. It has squeezed the boundary between it and the high pressure cell, which appears to be making a distinct line from Siberia straight down towards southern Hokkaido. The last time this happened we had sustained, heavy snowfalls for a couple of days. So, fingers crossed we could get enough snow to repair the wind damage from the last week of wild weather.

Weather conditions: Sunny, partly cloudy

Like yesterday, alot of snow until morning, then the sun. Now it's sunny with clouds rolling in and out of the area. A crisp -8C presently with -2 in the village should keep the powder intact despite the sun today.

For outstanding views as well as powder today, the pick would have to be Madarao and/or Suginohara. Good freeriding at Seki Onsen as well.

Naeba Now!

Sunday 27th January 2008, 9:00am
Weather conditions: changeable, low cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yet again, a trusty minus six degrees Celsius in the town this morning. The sky is Grey and there is a moderate wind. The snow seemed to stop at some point last night, whilst the snow clearance continued with a relentless drudgery of diesel engines pushing and shoving the stacks and piles of snow thats been dumped on us over the last few days.

The wind has been transporting and drifting the snow consistently over recent days also - so we can expect and it's been proved, that most of the rivers in the valleys are gone and buried for the rest of the season giving us safer routes in the back country and access to more of those sneaky runs. Enjoy!   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Sunday 27th January 2008, 9:52am
Weather conditions: snowing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Fresh snow today and it is so great to wake up to in the valley. Currently snowing moderately and if it goes as forecast should continue through tomorrow.

3cm plus so far from this snowfall and it has all fallen since early morning.

Minimal winds today so it is a great opportunity to see the big fat flakes of Furano powder falling in complete silence and purity. Check the snow flakes as they are picture perfect today.

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 27th January 2008, 9:58am
Weather conditions: Some cloud over the Alps, blue sky and sunny in the east.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another great day in Hakuba this morning. Sunny skies and good visibility on the slopes will make for an epic day and the new snow over the past few days makes the turns that much softer. Trace amounts of snow in the valley this morning and about 3-5cm accumulated with wind transport up on top. Groomed conditions on most slopes with packed and chopped powder on many runs as well. Light winds and colder temperatures this week should keep the snow light and dry and hopefully not too much of that wind crust.

Be very cautious on large steep wind slab slopes in the alpine and the tree line. Cornices are big and should be avoided. Also be careful of solar radiation and temperatures increasing.

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Alpine: Considerable
Tree-line: Considerable
Below tree-line: Moderate

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 27th January 2008, 10:16am
Weather conditions: Snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More snow in Nozawa today, it doesn't seem to want to stop. It is falling lightly now, the skies are light and it is marginally warmer. It should be a more pleasant day to be on the mountain conditions-wise today . The forecast is for some fine weather tomorrow, with the sun expected to make its first appearance for quite some time.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 27th January 2008, 10:17am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well it is still snowing this morning... it's fairly bright and maybe the snow is coming down more peacefully than it has been, and the forecast for the day is snow/cloud and it still looks like we can expect the snow to stop sometime in the afternoon. It is also a less cold than it has been, and at the moment the thermometer has just gone over the 0 degrees mark for the first time in a while!

About 10-15cm of snow on the top of the car this morning.

Tomorrow the forecast is just cloud and milder still, but it is looking like the snow might be back a few days later.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 27th January 2008, 10:24am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After the fine weather of yesterday morning some snow clouds came back to Shiga Kogen and we have snow at the moment, though it looks likely to last long this time as cloud is forecast for the afternoon.

The temperatures remain very low - an average of around -12/-13 degrees. It has certainly been a cold week, but we have had some decent snowfall which is giving us some excellent conditions in the area.

Tomorrow looks set to be just cloudy, with the hope of things clearing up more.

Yakebitaiyama today is holiding a ski competition meaning that a small part of that resort (Karamatsu) will not be available to the likes of you and me. They are also saying that the No 3 romance lift will have a bit of a later start (11am) due to them moving snow around. It shouldn't affect the resort that much though.

Night operations today at the following resort areas:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama
- Kumanoyu

Minakami Now!

Sunday 27th January 2008, 10:45am
Weather conditions: overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow fell lightly for most of the day yesterday and has continued through to this morning bringing an extra 30cm of fresh. The sky has now lightened up and it looks like the snow will stop by mid morning.

Tomorrow the sun is foreast to show itself with the following 2 days being loudy again and some possible snow coming in again from Wednesday night for 3 days.

Great on -piste snow conditions at all areas. The main quad at houdaigi has broken and will not be operating for the next few days but is still great for beginners.

The huge amount of fresh snow on top of the wind slab (formed by the strong winds of last week) has created unstable conditions and a number of weak layers in the upper snow pack. This could lead to some large sluffs and possible slab avalanches on steeper terrain. Considerable caution should be exercised in the backcountry over the next few days.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable
Tree Line: Considerable
Below Tree line: Moderate   Read more ...
