Weather conditions: Snow

It didn't really clear up yesterday for more than a few minutes and the snow continued. About another 20-30cm since the last report.

This morning it is still snowing and forecast to continue for the day and into tomorrow. It feels like it has been snowing forever. There are still some fairly strong winds around at times, and temperatures around -2 at the moment at town level.

At the time of writing, only the Mitsumata area of Kagura is open again, and over at Naeba the Dragondola is not moving along with a few other lifts - this may well change if conditions get any better, but it seems unlikely. The southern area of GALA is also closed.   Read more ...

The snow continues! Conditions are mostly unchanged from yesterday with cold temperatures and poor visibility outside - and many people actually hoping that it will stop snowing, as many of the slopes are near empty.    Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Snowing heavily

Dumpage in Niseko! We've had at least half a metre of snow since last report and it hasn't stopped yet. All off piste areas will have bottomless turns and in the more sheltered areas don't forget to bring your snorkel. I'd made the mistake of not moving the car for 2 days and this morning I could barely see it.

The official snow depth from the resort in Hirafu village is 1.1m. This is just ridiculous considering we've had close to a metre of snow in the last 3 days. Even the nearby town of Kutchan is reporting 1.3m. Don't know why a resort would totally underestimate their snowdepths but here they seem to.

Anyway it's going to be an awesome day out there with most lifts operational.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snowing

It is snowing still this morning with low clouds again but forecasts are telling us that it might clear up somewhere in the afternoon. There are still some fairly strong gusty winds especially higher up this morning.

Looking at the forecasts is seems there might be a break in the snow clouds over New Year.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 28th December 2005, 12:38pm
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing 3 cm / hour\r\n
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a lol in the snow fall overnight we are right back were we started - it's snowing again.

With strong winds up top yesterday and large amounts of fresh snow there is a high instability in the off piste areas. Most of the backcountry tours in town are cancelling tours because of this danger. Travel in the backcountry or open and exposed areas is not advised. Cornices are big and unstable and windward ridges are scoured of snow from the high winds over the last couple of days. This wind will have also created wind slab in the bowls and week spots around rocks that have been scoured of snow.

Natural and human triggered avalanches likely. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.   Read more ...
