Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 28th February 2008, 8:00am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is still snowing this morning and there is another 10-20cm of snow to clear away just a little earlier. Just a slight wind at the moment, but stronger winds are forecast for later on this morning. It's still very 'mid-winter' out there!

Kagura is reporting 60cm of snow since yesterday. Today due to the winds that are still with us higher up, Kagura is opening up until the Gondola with the top lifts at Kagura waiting to see if conditions improve to open. The Tashiro area is closed for the day.

GALA Yuzawa is open today.

The forecast for tomorrow is currently fine weather, so probably a very good day to get out there and enjoy all this new powder.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 28th February 2008, 8:35am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud, clearing up in places
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow yesterday and snow today. Lots of new snow to play in as the mid-winter conditions and temperatures are back once again to Shiga Kogen. Probably up to 40cm or so since yesterday in some places, and the official snow depth numbers are all looking good at the moment too - Yokoteyama reaching 300cm with others close-by.

It's another very cold morning.

The snow is coming down still in places, but there are signs that things are clearing up. The sun was just peaking through the snow clouds for a short while in the Maruike area just a short while ago and some blue skies visible in the distance and indeed the forecast is for things to clear up later in the day.

Nighta is planned at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 28th February 2008, 8:44am
Weather conditions: snowy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Shocking stuff. Snow literally up to my pectorals this morning. Though I must say here that we didn't have 'three quarters worth of a gaijin amount of snow', No, That was the drifted snow. Now if I was to dangle a ruler into some snow this morning to have a wee measure, for sure it would be up past the knees - a right old struggle getting into the establishment of work it was. The sun just came out too - it's still a little windy at times but the satellite pictures are showing it to clear up as the day goes on. Powder here we come! we're expecting danger though - there has been so much snow that every inch of the mountain will be loaded with snow. Naeba are not reporting opening gondolas at the moment though the ski office is saying an opening of number 2 gondola is likely around lunchtime.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 28th February 2008, 8:58am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Very heavy snow fell yesterday afternoon in Nozawa, which we expected to continue all night. Like yesterday the overnight snowfall was a little disappointing, however there should be plenty up there to please. The top of the mountain is in the clouds at the moment, but there is some blue sky over the village and it should clear up during the day.

Snow levels are back up to the four metre mark on Yamabiko. We have more snow forecast over the next few days so it should stay there going into March.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 28th February 2008, 9:34am
Weather conditions: Partially overcast clouded above 2400m
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba currently sits under partially clear skies with the upper peaks still shrouded in clouds. About 20-25cm of new snow to report overnight atop the ski resorts and about 5 cm in the valley. Wind overnight has packed down the snow on ridges but still soft snow to be found in less scoured areas on and off-piste. Light wind from the NW today and more sun and clearing expected by the afternoon.

Backcountry Travel Advisory as at Feb 28th:

Wind transport of snow over the past 24hrs has deposited snow in leeward slopes and made current cornices even bigger. Due caution should be taken when entering wind loaded slopes and today's south faces will be exposed to the sun making for potential weak spots on steep faces and around rocks where the sun has warmed them up. Still obscured visibility above 2400m so be aware of the risks of not seeing where you are going.

Always assess the slope that you wish to ride with observations of avalanche activity, weather conditions and snow pack tests like the compression or reuch block test.

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Tree Line: Considerable

Alpine: High

Niseko Now!

Thursday 28th February 2008, 9:53am
Weather conditions: Overcast with light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was limited access to the mountain again yesterday with many of the upper lifts not operating. Wind had affected much of the higher snow but there were some good conditions lower down in areas like Miharashi and the Super Ridge where thigh to waist deep powder had accumulated. Today looks like it could be great with all lifts except the Ace 4 running and good visibility around most of the mountain.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 28th February 2008, 13:04pm
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

The snow has been coming down hard over the past 24hours with 60cm of fresh overnight bringing the total snow from this storm (HST) to 1.2m at the valley level. The snow still continues to fall but is supposed to clear by early afternoon.

The outlook for tomorrow is for fine weather with more snow now expected on Saturday. From Sunday onwards the sun is forecast to shine for almost an entire week. This will make a nice change from the heavy snow and winds of late.

Backcountry Advisory
High winds have transported much of the exposed snow to sheltered areas creating very deep pockets of up to 1.8m of powder. The large amounts of fresh snow are highly likely to sluff on steeper terrain, with even some fresh snow slabs witnessed yesterday.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable
Tree Line: Considerable
Below Tree line: Moderate   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 28th February 2008, 13:54pm
Weather conditions: heavy snow, cloudy, patches of flat light
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a fun fresh day, with enough fresh snow to cover all bumps and so there was lots of smooth lines all over the mountain. Arguably the best day of the last couple of weeks yesterday.

Today we wake to 15cm of fresh, so again there will be lots of fresh lines up there today. The mountain is very quiet, so don't be surprised to find fresh lines all day up there today. Pick of the runs is Panorama and Challenge, but don't forget Kuma at 11 and 2.

There is wind scalled patches, so be careful when going from windblown patches back to ice in some parts up high.

Look out for the Self-Defence Force today and tomorrow as they have their annual Self-Defence Force Competition on the Kitanomine Zone.
