Niseko Now!

Friday 29th December 2006, 8:37am
Weather conditions: Gentle Breeze and Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We got a light dusting of about 5 cms over-night as temperatures have dropped below freezing. This should add to the powdery conditions up high.

There is a slight breeze from the North to North-West, which is looking to increase as the day continues.

Best riding will be early on the groomers, particularly at Annupuri and Higashiyama, as they will remain protected with the increasing wind.

Yesterday saw clear blue-sky conditions, with some mild cases of sunburn reported. On the long term forecast chart, a low pressure system is building on the west of the Russian continent and may bring some of that well known Niseko Powder by mid next week.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 29th December 2006, 8:44am
Weather conditions: Overcast, light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Only a dusting of snow yesterday daytime and the slopes were looking pretty bad, compacted and icy on the lower groomers, one of the worst days so far this season. We received 4-5cm of light powdery snow last night in town so hopefully that will be around 10cm on the mountain and will start to hide the damage of Wednesdays rain.

The temperatures are still too high, -4 at the moment, but the weekly forecast is still predicting that the temps will drop over the next few days with a high likelihood of snow for the next 4 days.

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 29th December 2006, 8:56am
Weather conditions: Snow!!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good news at last!

Gala Yuzawa are reporting 50cm of new snow since last night and have opened up once more. Lots of snow up at Kagura and Naeba as well, so expect most of Naeba to suddenly be open as well. There should be really good conditions up there as well. There are some fairly strong winds though, especially high up, and so some lifts may be moving slowly.

At town level there wasn't as much as that, but still enough snow for resorts to prepare to open and we can expect more openings today - Kandatsu have already opened and Iwappara and others are busy preparing the slopes. If the snow continues today (which it is forecast to) then by tomorrow probably every resort will be at least part open.

More details coming later on in the day.    Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 29th December 2006, 9:08am
Weather conditions: grey, with bursts of sun, occasional snow flutter
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterdays indirect threat to the gods of weather about going to Jamaica appears to have worked!

A trusty 35 cm of snow on the ground up here this morning, a bunch of ski artillery appears to have disappeared from the dry room, so expect to see another report later today - glistening with grins!

Naeba is just about visible - expect white outs today as the wind is still gusty and blowing stuff around. No Gondolas working as yet. I'd expect No 2 to open first and No1 if the conditions get better, they usually hesitate on a day like this - so time will tell.

The sun has just popped out actually - surely will disappear as fast as it has just appeared, keeping a chilly -7 degrees at 900 meters.

All in all, an excellent day to get up there and get a preview of more of what's to come!

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 29th December 2006, 9:09am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Decent snowfall has arrived! Around 20-40cm of snow depending on where you look, but this snowfall is quickly enabling many of the resorts to open up more lifts. The following resort areas are now fully open:

Kumanoyu
Sun Valley
Maruike
Higashidateyama
Nishidateyama
Ichinose Diamond

Other resort areas are generally opening up more and a bit more snow and we might be close to fully open. There are some fairly strong winds today and this is meaning that some places may be running lifts slower than usual (and if the winds become worse maybe stop them at times).

But this feels like the beginning of the season. More snow forecast for today, tomorrow and Sunday.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 29th December 2006, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Sky:Obscured (in the cloud) Snowing 4 cm/hr.\r\n
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is "Dumping Dudes and Dudesess" with fulsome volume and fluffiness. Something like 45 cm in the valley bottom and our trained observers have measured close to a metre of new snow (HN) in the last 24 hours at 1,500 m a.s.l. The rocks are mostly covered. Yesterday when we left the top of the lift-accessible terrain the wind was blowing with moderate strength (20 to 40 km/hr.) with gusts of strong (40 to 60 km/hr.).

The forecast wind for the valley is in the moderate range.
Observations at the Hira Kawa weather station (at 830 m a.s.l., 36 deg. 41 min. 13 sec. N. Lat., 137 deg. 49 min. 29 sec. E. Long.) recorded at 0700 hrs.:
Sky: Obscured (i.e. no cloud form observable/in the cloud)
Temperature: -6.3 Centigrade
Wind:Calm
Precipitation: Snowing four cm/hr.
Barometric Pressure: 922 hPa,and steady
HN (height of new snow): 38 cm (moderate density)
HS (height of snow on the ground): 38 cm

Hazard:
Below Tree Line (BTL): Moderate and deteriorating as more surface features are covered and "threshold" coverage is achieved.

At Tree Line (TL) "Considerable" meaning that natural avalanches are possible, and human triggered avalanches are probable. The metre and more of new snow at 1,500 m a.s.l. in the past 24 hours with the winds strong enought to move it should trigger feelings of caution in those with any sense whatsoever.

Above Tree Line (ATL) the hazard should be considered as "High", i.e. natural and human triggered avalanches are likely. With this rapid heavy loading and "moderate" to "high" winds the 'great, white, open areas should be handled carefully. The threat is now from above. Natural avalanches are becoming very possible. We have not been in the the open, uncontrolled terrain yesterday or today to test the stability but it is suspected that soft slabs are forming in all open areas. Lee slopes are loading and cornices are growing much bigger "lips". Remember that if these "lips" drool in a big way they could trigger the lee slope slab below. That is the what I mean by 'the threat form above'.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 29th December 2006, 9:52am
Weather conditions: lightly snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
At last the much awaited snow has come. There is about 10 - 15 cm of fresh snow at the village level on the ground this morning and around 40cm of fresh higher in the mounatins and it is still snowing lightly. The forecasted high winds have not eventuated, so conditions for hitting the slopes are great.

The snow is now forecast to continue through to Saturday evening which should bring a total of over 50 cm to the Minakami valley ski areas and over 80cm to the higher ski areas.

All of the remaining unopened ski areas are planning on opening tomorrow and have all lifts operational for the new years holidays.

Recommendations:

For families - Houdaigi;
For powder hounds - Tenjindaira (if closed - White Valley);
For park riders - Okutone;
For beginner to intermediate - Norn or Houdaigi;
For night sessions - Okutone (closes at midnight on weekends).

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 29th December 2006, 10:37am
Weather conditions: Overcast, snowing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A certainly different side of Nozawa has appeared today! Heavy snow from late yesterday afternoon has increased the base depths to 1.2meters on Yamabiko and 1meter at Uenotaira. The temperatures are currently –10C on the mountain and –5C in the village. The visibility on the mountain understandably is poor and the winds are still quite high.

The forecast is for snow to continue for the next few days at least until Sunday. The resort, however, is still only partly open.
