Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 8:25am
Weather conditions: Cloudy/Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
When 10-20 cms snow accumulates in Hiroshima we feel pretty confident its gonna snow here. Living in Hakuba lately has been like living in Hollywood with powder every other night. About 7 1/2 cms accummulation in the village this morning, my neighbour was sweeping the light fluffy white stuff off his driveway with a broom when this writer left for work.

Much warmer this morning with temperatures of -2 degrees C in Wadano. This morning will be another awesome day with plenty of face shots to be had. Will post later with more details of how much snow fell up top and updated base depths.

Avalanche Danger Scale:

Alpine: Considerable
Tree-line: Considerable
Below tree-line: Moderate

Snow has continued through the day and doesn't look like it's letting up but with the warm temp and fairly soft snowfall there hasn't been a lot of accumulation in the valley. Some deep powder this morning with one of our riders finding about 20-30 cms on Goryu but base measurements up there today haven't shown an increase yet...   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 9:07am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday there was a dusting of snow on the main slopes. The groomers were the best riding in the morning. The peak opened early with everyone taking advantage of the best snow on the mountain with waist deep powder. It was overcast up high with good visibility down low. It is interesting that the resort snow pack has dropped 10 centimeters at the top and the bottom indicating that the powder is settling.

The stars were out last night and now the sun is shining bright this morning. There is no new snow. There is a large high over the Sea of Japan and Russia which would indicate that good weather is here for a few days. All gates will be open to the off piste but most powder will be skied out. It will be a nice day on the groomed.

Myoko Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 9:22am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It was pretty warm in the valleys but remained below freezing on Myoko to keep the snow from melting and icing subsequently. But packing has got the levels slightly down. That's good news for cross country skiers and snow-shoe trekkers. This is about the average time of year that packing allows trekkers to start walking on the snow surface easily.

Snows are beginning to steadily fall at Akakura and Seki, so freeriding at Seki should be fine this afternoon. Nothing yet on the Nagano side (Suginohara, Kurohime, Togakushi) but full on this evening.

The pick of the day is Akakura Onsen. The old Champion Course has opened again. That's the course with The Wall (38deg straight down), Japan's steepest run. And the snow goes on...

Your Myoko area levels for today:
245cm (Akakura Kanko);
245cm (Akakura Onsen);
190cm (Ikenotaira);
315cm at the top, 130cm bottom (Suginohara);
240cm (Kumado Snowboard Park);
140cm (Pine Valley);
325cm (Seki Onsen);
150cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
130cm (Madarao Sympathique);
155cm (Madarao Kogen);
135cm (Cupid Valley);
235cm (Myoko Ski Park);
125cm (Togakushi);
145cm (Kurohime);
115cm (Iizuna);
125cm (Iizuna Kogen)

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 9:24am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a cloudy and overcast start to the day here in Yuzawa after a relatively mild evening. This morning as I write this it is just above zero on the thermometer and it might rise to around 2 or 3 degrees later on in the day, so a fairly mild one today.

The forecast has a chance of snow, but if it does snow it seems unlikely to be anything more than a light sprinkling.

Similar conditions are forecast for tomorrow as well.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow, changeable
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light snow falling this morning in the region as the darker grey clouds come back. It's coming down lightly and slowly right now with just a slight wind, but the forecast is for cloud/light snow, so it might not last all that long this time.... difficult to predict where it might go today.

It is also much less cold than it has been of late with temperatures more in the -3 to -6 range this morning instead of the previous minus double figures that we have been seeing for a while.

Night operations planned at the following resort areas today:
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 10:05am
Weather conditions: Grey skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Things have warmed up around here over the last 24 and on top of that, we didn't even receive our 4cm that was forecast for last night. Tsssk.

Dead on zero here in the village this morning. A cloudy day with a bit of a haze lurking over the mountain, though maybe I should refer to it as low cloud as that is what it really is. Visibility isn't too bad though and so we can expect some high speed groomed runs on the lower parts of the mountains whilst things get a bit dicey further up the hill.

Here's sitting with one eyeball on the weather forecast which is telling us about a bunch of snow that is heading this way. Nice.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 10:21am
Weather conditions: overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun was shining for most of the day yesterday, with plenty of powder and face shots. The clouds rolled in around mid afternoon and the temperature dropped once again.

Today is another cloudy and cool day with a current temperature of -2 deg C. There is light snow falling at Tenjindaira that is expected to continue for the next few days. The rest of Minakami remains cool without any precipitation.

As expected a large avalanche (size 3) occurred at Mt. Tanigawadake, and ran out down the famous "avalanche alley" run on the backside of Tenjindaira ski area. This has now filled in the creek making for easy exit, but there is still one slope in the alpine that has not yet dropped. (caution needed)

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Considerable
Tree Line: Moderate

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 10:29am
Weather conditions: Very light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was weather wise the best day of the season so far. There was not a cloud to be seen and barely any wind, with rare views out to the Japan sea. Although there was no serious powder left snow quality was good, the only worry being the warmish temperatures further down the mountain which may cause an icy morning today. It is snowing very very lightly at the moment, probably not even enough for a bit of dust on crust. It should stop and be a cloudy day today, with a little bit more snow overnight. More substantial snow and another dip in temperatures is expected on Thursday.

I will be back later on with snow depths once they are updated by the resort.

Well we were expecting just a sprinkle before lunch today, but it ended up snowing for almost all of the day. It was not the dry stuff we have grown accustomed to in the last few weeks, but heavy fast falling wettish crystals. Probably about 10 cm accumulated up top by the end of the day. In town it was close to rain, and as you can see from the temps, it was quite warm today.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 29th January 2008, 12:03pm
Weather conditions: warmer temperatures today, breaks of sunshine, minimal wind.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was an excellent day on the mountain. Fresh tracks all day with the top up to the base that we had been seeking over the last week.

Temperatures in the village are a little warmer today, with breaks of sunshine and a beautiful view across the valley to the Tokachidake range.
