Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 29th November 2011, 8:55am
Weather conditions: Fine conditions
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Over the weekend we saw some clear skies and relatively mild temperatures during the daytime. Yesterday more sun was forecast but it ended up being grey and cloudy all day.

This morning, some low lying fog aside, it really does look like it will turn into a lovely clear day with a high temperature of around 15 degrees forecast for Yuzawa early this afternoon. After this run of warmer temperatures though the good news is that it should start getting colder once again from tomorrow. There's not a huge dump of snow on the horizon though unfortunately - well, not down in town anyway. Hopefully Kagura should be getting a new cover of snow late Friday into/over the weekend, but nothing too major.

The milder conditions isn't doing Kagura many favours it seems. Over the weekend they had the quad lift operating an a run of 1300m, but from today they are switching back to just the No1 pair lift and the shorter course that they started out with (600m). Kagura are usually good at opening up runs as quickly as possible though so as soon as more snow falls we can expect them to do that.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Fine

It's going to be a fine day here today. Yesterday was supposed to be but ended up just being cloudy. A fairly mild +4 degrees though and set to get a bit warmer as the day progresses.

Well, as I reported Kagura did have the quad lift going, but with a lack of new snow since last week and the somewhat milder conditions they are having to revert back to have just the one pair lift and 600m course open from this morning.

So it's all still very limited at the moment as we wait for a decent snowfall to really kick things off properly.

Snowfall looks likely late on Friday and perhaps over the weekend as well, though reports on how much to expect are conflicting. Doesn't look like we can expect a huge dump of snow though. We'll just have to see.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Low cloud obscuring mountain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday stayed dry and clear with cloud cover forming later afternoon and remaining through until the morning.

Conditions this morning are still above freezing even at peak level where fog is obscuring much of the mountain above the Family Pair lift.

The snow looks to be arriving a few hours earlier than previous predictions and we may see some before night fall with the system arriving fully by tommorow morning which should drop a few cm on the slopes. Snowfall looks constant but light through the week with a big dump looking likely for Friday morning

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 29th November 2011, 14:11pm
Weather conditions: Fine, overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
So the season started and then had to be halted rather quickly with the upper lifts at Goryu and Hakuba 47 only running for a day and a half really...

The milder conditions have continued since the weekend and it's up to around 14 degrees in the village today. So it's not feeling particularly wintery right now I'm afraid.

You want good news, right?! The good news is that by later on tomorrow this milder spell should be coming to and end and we can look forward to colder temperatures and perhaps even some new snowfall on the upper slopes, though it will more than likely be rain down in the village.

Hopefully by the weekend there might be enough snow fallen up top for those runs to re-open. We'll let you know.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 29th November 2011, 15:16pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been a week of rather mild conditions in Nozawa. The snow that we had down quite low before the weekend has gradually melted and now the snow is patchy at around 1200m with a cover still up on the top slopes of the resort.

Earlier this afternoon we had a high temperature of around 15 degrees and around 8 up on the mountain and so not the most winter-like conditions.

The resort is still planning to open on 3rd December - this coming Saturday - but it is of course all going to depend on snow. Right now it would not be possible. But the encouraging news is that from tomorrow things look set to get colder once again. Possible snowfall tomorrow night and then some more before the weekend, but whether it is enough for part of the resort to open is something we are just going to have to wait on.

My guess would be that the opening will need to be delayed.

Reports will get more regular now as we approach the season start in Nozawa.    Read more ...
