It was a cloudy/foggy day all day yesterday with poor visibility. Some rain overnight and the roads are a bit wet this morning, though at the moment it isn't raining. The forecast for the day is cloud and a top temperature of 10 degrees. Tonight there is apparently a chance of snow though even if it does fall we can't expect it to last long.

Weather conditions: Overcast, fog
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another foggy day today it seems, with Kagura Number 5 Romance lift closed due to those conditions. A little earlier on there was rain falling at Kagura, but that seems to have stopped for now and cloud is forecast for most of the day though there is a chance of snow to fall late tonight - fingers crossed.

Prince Number 2 Gondola at Naeba is closed and lower slopes of Naeba now only have part snow cover - higher slopes are still fine.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 2nd April 2007, 9:39am
Weather conditions: Overcast skies (low clouds and fog)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba currently sits under a low cloud bank that is shrouding all the upper peaks. A balmy plus 5 degrees Celcius at the bottom and plus 2 celcius at the top of the gondola. Expect poor visibility above 1000m and variable spring snow conditions. Exposed patches on lower slopes and glide cracks in the snowpack. Many lower sections of the resorts are now completely closed due to lack of coverage. Higher areas are still fine and great spring skiing can be found. Winds are light from the NW and there is light snow foracast for this evening.

Avalanche Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Moderate

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Today's poor visibilty and the past few days of heavy rain make for a potential treacherous day for those heading off-piste. Warm temperatures combined with a snowpack saturated with water will most likely create unstable areas in steeper terrain, solar radiated terrain and areas with a shallow snowpack over rocks/vegetation. Spring is a good time to see glide cracks in the snow where a deep fracture will open up in areas of tension. You don't want to end up in one of those. Other hazards to look out for are rock fall from cliff faces and subsequent debris on top of the snow.    Read more ...

Yesterday was the last day of the season for a few of the smaller resort areas of Shiga Kogen - and some of those will, depending on snow conditions, open up again for Golden Week (end of April). All of the major areas however still remain open.

It is another cloudy - and in places very foggy - start to the day here in Shiga Kogen with the temperature hovering around the 0 level. Visibility is varied, but in areas where that fog is it is very limited.   Read more ...

Snow depth: --
An overcast start to the day in Nozawa this morning. Temperatures are 0C at the top and the snow conditions are a little pebbly after the warm weather yesterday. The slopes are now operating on a reduced area from Yamabiko down to Uenotaira and the lift operation is reduced to the two yamabiko quads, the skyline double chair and the Uenotaira quad, plus the Nagasaka gondola. Winds at the moment are sitting at 15km/h and the visibility at the top is poor.

The forecast is for light snow to begin today on the mountain and continue through until at least Wednesday night.
