Zao Now!

Friday 2nd December 2011, 9:19am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning the sun is out and there's quite a lot of blue sky on show. A fine day it seems - mid season a day like this is always welcome but right now we don't have enough snow to ski or board, so we want snow to fall!

Tomorrow still looks like it will bring with it continued mild conditions and so not much chance of snow - likely rain down in the village and hopefully a dusting up top. Sunday night into Monday is looking much more promising though with snow forecast on the upper slopes at least...   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 2nd December 2011, 9:31am
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: 1cm
Snow depth: 60cm
The sky is the deepest blue with brilliant sunshine covering all of Furano this morning. This is a classic crystal clear COLD Furano winter morning with temperatures at the top falling to -13! It will be a great day to be out on the mountain as weather doesn't get any better than this. See you out there.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Friday 2nd December 2011, 10:23am
Weather conditions: Sunny, cloudless
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful crisp morning in Niseko today, one of the most spectacular sunrises I have seen in some time heralded an exciting morning of skiing.

Temperatures nice and low around -7 at the moment, no sign of the forecast heavy snow unfortunately as of 9.30 and it looks to be sunny all day. We are looking at a slight warming over Saturday night/Sunday morning with daytime temperatures rising above 0 with some light rain before falling again on Sunday with snow showers on the way for early next week.

Current riding conditions in Hirafu are limited to the 2 runs either side of the Ace 3 lift although the groomers were hard at work this morning and the talk is of more being opened up tomorrow. Annupuri is now operating Jumbo Pair 2 and as well as the gondola and Niseko Village have commenced operation on the Banzai pair.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 2nd December 2011, 10:28am
Weather conditions: Overcast, upper mountains visible
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a cloudy morning in Hakuba today. The sun is trying to make an appearance and it is lightening up and we can see the upper peaks peeking through the clouds. Above 1500m it snowed lightly over the past 24 hrs and the trees are nicely frosted.

The weather is expected to stay cloudy over the weekend and there is a chance of precipitation (hopefully in the form of snow). If the temperatures remain cold I'm sure we will get some snow even here in the valley and the season should get going soon.

Keeping our fingers crossed!

Naeba Now!

Friday 2nd December 2011, 16:44pm
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been a cloudy day today, with some blue sky on show from time to time, but has stayed fairly cold up on the maintain if not in the village. No real snowfall to report today.

Kagura resort is going to be able to manage to open the quad lift once again for Saturday and Sunday, so that quad and the pair lift will be operating. 1300m worth of course will be open again, though in places it's quite narrow and not very deep.

Tomorrow the forecast is for quite mild temperatures in the daytime and getting colder as evening approaches. Hopefully somewhere between Saturday night and Monday morning we might see some moderate snowfall at times - it might start at rain before turning into snow. It's all down to the Snow Gods. We shall see!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 2nd December 2011, 16:52pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Nozawa was hoping to be able to open tomorrow for the season but as you might have guessed that just isn't going to happen. While there is still some snow up top, above 1200m, there's not that much and certainly not enough to get the lifts moving and inviting people up there. So we are just going to have to wait a bit longer.

The resort has said that they now hope to open on Saturday 10th December, so a week later than planned.

Today has been fairly chilly with a high of around 5 degrees. Lots of cloud with some breaks in the cloud from time to time.

How's the forecast looking? While there does look to be snowfall due overnight Saturday and then into Monday on the upper slopes, I don't think we can expect that much. (Hopefully I will be wrong there!) Tomorrow is going to be quite mild with perhaps temperatures in the village hitting around 10 degrees. Rain is very likely in the village though hopefully it will turn into snow up on Yamabiko. After that, fair weather conditions are forecast for the middle of next week.

So, no significant cold front and snow dumpage on the short term horizon just at the moment. Hopefully when we get to the middle of next week, there'll be good news to share.

Have a fun weekend.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 2nd December 2011, 17:07pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Today started off nice and sunny but ended up being more generally cloudy as the day wore on. It was strange watching the national news last night where they were saying how cold everywhere was. I still think things are quite mild here and today it got to 5 degrees but it certainly didn't feel that cold - I was out in just a long sleeved shirt. Still feels autumnal here, I'd say.

What's on for the wekeend then? Well, Kagura are still open of course and they while the last few days they have been just operating the pair lift, tomorrow and Sunday they plan to have the quad lift open as well - taking the skiable course back up to 1300m in length. Remember if you go you will still need to get a bus from the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway to the base of the Kagura Gondola - so it's three rides before you get to the quad lift at Kagura.

Tomorrow it might even rain at Kagura with a mild start to the day forecast, but hopefully it will turn into snow as temperatures drop later in the day and they may see some snowfall up there overnight into Sunday. Sunday night into Monday as well. Fingers crossed that we can get some semi-decent cm up there over the weekend as milder conditions look set to come back mid-week again.

We haven't quite clicked into winter yet. Hopefully not much longer now.

Here's a recap of the planned opening dates of resorts in Yuzawa. All dependant on snowfall of course.

Planned resort opening dates:

Saturday 10th December:
Kagura - Tashiro
Yuzawa Kogen

Friday 16th December:
Kandatsu Kogen

Saturday 17th December:
Yuzawa Nakazato
Ludens Yuzawa
Nakazato Snow Wood
GALA Yuzawa

Thursday 22nd December:
Yuzawa Park

Friday 23rd December:
NASPA Ski Garden
Yuzawa Kogen (Nunoba)

I feel an update is necessary after what I wrote this afternoon... I have just come back from some time outside and it has turned very, very windy and also rather cold out there this evening - I think the wind is making it feel colder than it actually is.

The winds should have calmed down somewhat by the time the lifts open tomorrow morning but otherwise the forecast for tomorrow and Sunday remains the same as posted earlier.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 2nd December 2011, 17:07pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Cold and cloudy. Still a sprinkling of snow up high but need that big dump to get everything going. There is some precipitation coming over the weekend and into next week so we will have to see what happens with that.

We might get another light sprinkling of the white stuff or it could be the clear, liquid snow that we are not so keen on. Fingers crossed.   Read more ...
