Winds were severe overnight and continued for hours. For now the wind seems to have passed by and left a pretty nice morning. Above there is blue sky mixed with cloud. The sun is out and is warming the village. There is a huge wind affect on the slopes from the wind. The 5cm of fresh snow on the ground is a mix of new snow and wind blown from roofs etc. With that sun and fresh snow and the absence of wind it is going to be a great morning.

Cloudy, some blue sky and looks like clearing more
Good morning from Yuzawa.
By 5pm last night there was 20cm of snow since the morning and this morning I have just cleared another 6cm, so that makes 26cm in total to add to my report this morning.
Light snow has been falling early on this morning but it seems to be quickly clearing and there's increasingly blue sky appearing over Yuzawa as I write this, with more cloud still to the north over Minamiuonuma.
Tomorrow is still very likely to be sunny and warm with temps possibly rising to close on +10C in town in the afternoon. We can just hope that it quickly cools down again sometime on Monday, and happily we do have more snow lined up there on the forecast.
All ski resorts in the area appear to be opening as planned this morning.
Have a fun Saturday.

Oh dear. It's still very cold, windy and blizzard-like conditions here this morning. It's not letting up yet!
Just lower lifts are opening at the start of the day - 3 lifts at Hirafu, 5 lifts at Village, and 1 lift at both Annupuri and Hanazono are starting up.
Another 7cm of snowfall measured but that wind has been blowing it around and it's not exactly coming down straight either. So it is one of those days when you wonder just how much has fallen. Can't do more than just measure it though in the meantime!
Visibility is better this morning and while there is still a lot of cloud about, there is actually a bit of blue sky on show too.
Tomorrow should be calmer and we'll see some milder temps before dropping again around Monday and more snow moving in.
Real danger awaits in these conditions. Do be sensible and careful. And see you tomorrow.
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain Base 6.00am: -9°, 5cm new snow in the last 12 hrs, strong wind and snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -11.3, N18m/s, continued cornice and snowdrift development . Mikaeri Weather Station: -11°, 150cm snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: snow depth 215cm. Hirafu Ridgeline: -15°, N15m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -12.79°, 8cm new snow in last 24hrs, snow depth 160cm. WNW9.9m/s.(max21.1m/s 5.30am). Suttsu Weather Station: -3.8°, NNW21.5m/s, snow depth 47cm. Kutchan Weather Station: -6.9°, WNW9.9m/s, snow depth 162cm.
Blizzard conditions at mountain base. Above 800m there is major snowdrift and cornice development from the strong winds. Tests show delayed snow drift stabilisation and cornices are easily collapsing. On SE faces around 1000m there is a risk of cornice collapse triggering surface avalanches around 100cm depth. Predicted fracture layer is Jan 30 frost layer. Even if the wind drops and lifts are able to run, do not go into Osawa or Kozan no Sawa valley bottoms. Also on the surrounding mountains take care on leeward snowdrift slopes, even below the treeline.
Snow in trees is heavy, wind packed and a challenge. Be careful hitting a tree. Expect easily occurring avalanches in the steep gulleys in Moiwa Anbetsu area. Don’t follow tracks that you don’t know where they are going. Most accidents happen during or directly after blizzards. Even if the weather comes good, stay out of the valley bottoms. Always be cautious.

Lots of cloud still, some signs of clearer
Morning from Hakuba.
This morning the fresh snow news is less in the north with Cortina just reporting 1cm and Happo, 47 and Goryu all reporting between 5-10cm of fresh snow on the mountain. Not huge numbers of course but better than none as the weekend begins and the car parks quickly fill up.
We're expecting clearing clouds today and fairly mild conditions. There is still a lot of cloud around the mountains but it's clearer in some places.
Probably a beautiful clear morning tomorrow. It's still looking likely to be unseasonably warm (around 7C in village) with rain later in the day into Monday. Colder and back to snow please. (Please repeat many times).
In the meantime should be a good morning. Looking busy out there.
Take care and have fun.

Cloud and snow and wind
My many apologies for the missed reports over the last few days. It could not be avoided. I am hoping that I really will be able to get back to normal from now. Will do my best. For now I have gone back and added the snowfall for the days that we had it.
Anyway, just was just a bit of snow over the last few days but this morning there was a good 18cm of fresh. Still some moderate wind blowing around so we are all hoping for that to ease off quickly... but might need to have a few more windy condition days before we can hope for that.
Not much snow on the forecast either for the next few days and as with many other regions of Japan tomorrow is looking set to be unseasonably warm. There is even a chance of rain, even up here. Here's hoping we can avoid that.

Some cloud, nice blue sky
Some more snow since my report in the morning yesterday but not a large amount (and the resort aren't reporting any at all).
Lovely weather early on this morning. It is going to be a fine day.
So, this is the weekend that is going to get all warm and toasty. It's pretty cold this morning and should be mild during the day. The warmth is coming tomorrow. Rain later on tomorrow too and possibly some more snow early week. Come on Nature, let's remembering that it is mid winter! Don't even think about the S* word.

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Saturday 2nd February 2019, 9:12am
Blue sky, cloud
Good morning from Nozawa.
It's weekend time again and Nozawa is already feeling up for a busy weekend.
Nasuki, our most favourite bright green skier vegetable mascot character, is looking happy and ready for a good weekend on the Hikage slopes.
Yesterday we had more snow - 5-20cm being reported by the resort up until 3pm, with another 2-5cm overnight. I am able to add a measured 9cm to my report.
Before we get any more fresh snow we are going to be feeling somewhat warmer. There's already lots of blue sky and sun with some clouds this morning and it is around -2 as of 9am, and a high of about +2C or slightly more forecast for later on.
Tomorrow is going to be warmer still, hopefully not alarmingly so. There's a chance of rain as well either later tomorrow or into Monday. Once we're past that hopefully short-lived warm up, we should be seeing a return to colder conditions and snow next week.

Shiga Kogen Now!
Saturday 2nd February 2019, 9:32am
Cloud, fine, sun, varied
Good morning from Shiga Kogen.
Cloudy at the beginning of the day but it has been improving and like neighbouring regions we are seeing increasing clearer skies and sunshine - perhaps we'll more of it as the day goes on. Definitely much calmer.
No fresh snow being reported by resorts. But I measured some - since my report yesterday, so that is what is recorded here. (Why do ski resorts here seem to just ignore snow that falls in the daytime. An ongoing frustration; let's move on!)
OK so, tomorrow. Sunshine. That's nice. Warmer conditions. Not so. Some forecasts have some rain even up here in Shiga Kogen. I am hoping we will avoid that. The good news in all that is that it should be snowing once again early in the week.
So generally fine weather due during the day today and tomorrow.
Hope some of you can enjoy it.

Appi Kogen Now!
Saturday 2nd February 2019, 10:39am
Gong Xi Fa Cai,
What a gusty whiteout awful few days we’ve had up here.
Gale force westerly winds basically shut the mountain down for the last 2 days with sporadic operation of some of the lower lifts. Today looks slightly better with this afternoon hopefully bringing a little sunshine our way.
The winds should die down this afternoon and into tomorrow with temperatures rising into the plus zone. We may see +4 tomorrow with a little rain.
Temperatures falling rapidly tomorrow night with the associated westerly winds coming back.
With the snow we’ve had the last few days I’m sure there’s lots of fun to be had up there.
Planned lift operations & course areas (subject to change due to weather conditions):
- Appi Gondola ** ON HOLD ** - Central Quad lift - Central Number 1 - Central Number 2 - Central Number 3A - Central Number 5 ** ON HOLD ** - Sailer quad ** ON HOLD ** - Sailer Number 2 - Sailer connecting - Vista quad ** ON HOLD ** - Nishimori ** ON HOLD **
* Bravo, Cruise 1, Cruise 2 and Dragon Tail tree runs should be open as normal when the lift operations allow - register to use them at Plaza 1st Floor
Official groomed snow depth (as reported by resort):
