Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A wet one today. We had huge thunderstorms all night last night and it is still raining here in Hakuba. Snow should be fine though albeit a little on the wet. Too warm for snow so wear a rain coat out there today.

For those of you headed out into the backcountry, be aware that there will be quite a bit of debris at the bottom of the shutes due to heavy sliding carrying rocks and branches, old skis and whatever else may have been burried up there. On pisters should have fun on the - still plentiful - spring slush. Just keep watch for the occasional exposed tree stump, dirt and rocks below midway.

Take greater precaution on steep slopes where the snow from last week has still not slid. Intense solar radiation will also warm up the surface layers and allow for wet loose slides again in steeper terain. (30 degree + slopes)   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Rain, cloud

Once more the rain clouds moved in last night and it was heavy rain at times, with some thunder mixed in late on.

It's still raining this morning and generally a relatively dark and cloudy morning. It's also colder than it has been for a while.

As the forecast stands at the moment though it is looking like things will be much better from tomorrow through to Saturday with sun/cloud forecast for that main Golden Week holiday period. Expect the slopes the be more crowded than on a usual weekday - more like weekend levels.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 2nd May 2006, 9:29am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The last couple of days have seen a fair amount of rainfall across the region with some snow at higher altitudes. Finally I can walk into work without having to walk on any snow at all. The snow has receded from many of the fields around Kutchan and in places a little green grass can be seen. It's great to see some colour again after the months of black and white.

Today has started cloudy but this should break up a bit later in the day. It's quite cool and not far up the mountain the trees look encrusted in rime.

The depth of snow up on the mountain is still in excess of 4m in Hirafu. This is the greatest depth at the end of April in the last 10 years. It'll be interesting to see how long before all the snow melts.    Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Weather conditions: Rain, low cloud

More of the resort areas are now open for the last part of the season, but the weather isn't cooperating - at least for today.... rain. Things look good for the rest of Golden Week though, at least up until the weekend as we have a few days of sun forecast.

Whilst most of the areas will close at the end of this coming weekend, a few resorts will be open longer. Kumanoyu plans to be part open until May 14th, while Yokoteyama is going to try and stretch the season out a bit longer than that.   Read more ...
