Myoko Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 8:34am
Weather conditions: Light snows turning to clouds presently
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More covering snow for the morning presently, with cloudy (and a bit of sun)weather coming on for the rest of the day.

Last night didn't get very cold; only around -4 on the slopes, so watch for slush at the bottom of the more popular resorts. Otherwise, there's powder at the tops.

That makes today's pick Seki Onsen. It's retained its powdery status the whole of this winter. Let's hope next year does the same.

Your Myoko area levels for today:
250cm (Akakura Kanko);
250cm (Akakura Onsen);
195cm (Ikenotaira);
325cm at the top, 140cm bottom (Suginohara);
245cm (Kumado Snowboard Park);
145cm (Pine Valley);
335cm (Seki Onsen);
160cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
150cm (Madarao Sympathique);
170cm (Madarao Kogen);
145cm (Cupid Valley);
240cm (Myoko Ski Park);
135cm (Togakushi);
160cm (Kurohime);
125cm (Iizuna);
135cm (Iizuna Kogen)

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Grey skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A bit chilly this morning, there is snow falling and a moderate breeze. A real change from yesterday . The temperature is down to -4 in the town and the Naeba hill has vanished from sight. There is around 10cm of snow on the ground - enough to soften up the runs after the groomer has compressed it down - nice to feel under the foot, satisfying - as it crunches beneath - knowing that a ski crash may well leave your animated silhouette in the piste beneath.

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 8:52am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A slight sprinkling this morning and just an hour ago it was starting to snow, but seems to have eased off now. Rather wet snow again like yesterday. (Seems like Kagura has had about 10cm of new snow up there). The mountains aren't visible right now, covered with cloud down to town level.

At the moment it is +1 degrees in the Yuzawa town area but probably won't get much higher than that during the day. The forecast is for cloud most of the day, but it is looking likely that tomorrow might be a snowy day, with some stronger winds thrown in for good measure, as well as being colder than today.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 9:01am
Weather conditions: currently snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Periods of heavy snow overnight and sunny skies this morning. 3cm plus accumulation in town. Snow currently falling and expected to continue for the rest of the day.

The fog rolled in thick last night in town. It looked like a ghost town as the river and then all the hotels and buildings were blanketed in a gloomy eirie thick fog.

A few of the school groups in town are departing this morning, so the slopes will be less busy with no obstacles of school kids to dodge on the lower slopes.

The forecast for the rest of the week is for heavy snow Friday and Saturday.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 9:18am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A bit more snow this morning to report in the area with generally similar conditions as yesterday... some snow falling, grey skies, relatively low visibility even though it is fairly bright, and cold but not crazy cold temperatures. At the moment it is about -6 degrees in most parts of Shiga Kogen. There is only a slight wind this morning so conditions out there on the hills should be pretty good.

Normal weekday operations at the resorts with nothing of note affecting operations.

We might not get so much snow today but it looks like tomorrow will be a colder and snowier day than today and also possibly Friday, so we look all set for great conditions once again at the weekend.

Night operations planned at the following resort areas today:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 9:51am
Weather conditions: overcast and snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just after yesterdays report the snow started up at the valley level and is still snowing now. The snow was so light yesterday that only around 1cm settled at the valley (5cm above 1300m)and this morning there is now 5cm at the valley. The snow looks like it will start to weaken towards midday.

Tomorrow the snow is forecast to fall for the entire day, bringing an expected 40cm to the upper mountains, and around 20cm to the valley. The snow should continue through to Friday with a cloudy day forecast for Saturday. Winds may be strong in the mornings over the next couple of days but should ease towards midday.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 10:54am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another very fine day here in Nozawa. It is a little bit too warm for my liking, above zero on the bottom slopes and probably going to get warmer. There should be some heavy but fresh stuff up on the top slopes this morning from yesterday fall.

From tonight for the next five days the little snowman features heavily on Nozawa's weather forecast, with the most snow expected overnight tonight.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 10:56am
Weather conditions: Snow flurries
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow started to fall straight, no wind, to the ground again early this morning and snow flurries will continue through out the day. The temperature is mild and the snow is a little heavier than yesterdays 20 cm, therefore, there hasn't been a lot of accumulation in the valley. Some deep powder this morning on the resorts with one of our riders finding about 20-30 cms on Goryu but base measurements from Goryu haven't shown an increase yet... possible settling in the snow or just to much for the patrol to get out to the weather plot. Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort is measuring 15 cm over night and are reporting for the top of the gondola a base of 245 cm, -6.3 Celsius air temp. , calm to light winds out of the South West and 500 m visibility with snow continuing to accumulate.

Expect soft and fluffy out there today and all day long as the slopes are full of snow but very scarce on people riding in it. Lift lines, No... Sweet Lines, Yes!

Roads are slippery so take it slow and easy the powder will still be there after lunch.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Steep Alpine bowls and steep slopes at Tree Line are still very unpredictable and should be avoided if you are not willing to accept the large risk that is associated with these slopes at this time. For areas of better stability and less risk look to moderately angled slopes in simple terrain at or bellow tree line. Settlement and bonding below tree line have created a relatively stable pack across the board in the Hakuba valley but that does NOT include steep open terrain or gullies that may produce slab avalanches and will definitely produce slides in the new snow that has fallen over the last 2 days. The 30 + cm of new snow that has come down with no wind and is laying over a layer of surface hoar frost that was produced 3 nights ago pre the new snow falling. The surface hoar is sitting on sun crust on southern slopes and will produce slides that run far and fast with continued accumulation of new snow. Be aware of increases in wind speed and the associated loading of lee slopes as wind changes direction to North Westerlies and picks up as the High pressure system that is approaching hits some time early tomorrow morning.

Avalanche Hazard:

Alpine: High
Tree-line: High
Below tree-line: Considerable   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 30th January 2008, 16:09pm
Weather conditions: Overcast, light snow at times
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was no snow last night with stars in the sky and we woke up this morning to an overcast Niseko with some light snow falling gently - and it has been a similar story on and off for most of the day... overcast with light snow at times, with low visibility on the mountain.

All the lifts have been running and it has not been busy at all.

It was -12 up on the top of the mountain with the temperature at -6 at the foot, with the snow depths unchanged since yesterday.   Read more ...
