Furano Now!

Wednesday 31st January 2007, 8:27am
Weather conditions: Overcast, light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday started off as the perfect powder day but with the clear skies it quickly warmed up and by the afternoon the powder had turned to heavy, sticky snow. We have had a dusting of snow overnight and no more than a couple of centimetres in the last 24 hours.

This morning is a lot warmer than usual, -2 at 8am at mountain base, but it is trying to snow as I write and the sky is overcast so hopefully we will be getting some more snow and less sunshine today. The forecast is giving a high likelihood of snow this afternoon and tomorrow morning. It is currently a little windy but not enough to cause any problems on the mountain.

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 31st January 2007, 9:00am
Weather conditions: Heavy snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There were almost whiteout conditions from about midway up the Ace Quad here in Hirafu yesterday. Low lying cloud kept visibility down to between 50 and 100 metres higher on the mountain. Making riding very difficult. Below the cloud cover the visibility was quite good.

Temperatures yesterday got up to just over 1 degree in the village and some snow has melted. On the mountain there has been some snow pack compaction. It was a relatively warm night and this morning it was raining! However this has turned into snow and right now its snowing heavily. This is forecast to continue through the day. The southerly wind is breezy here in the village and will be moderate on the hill.

With the temperature forecast to stay below freezing overnight we can expect more snow (and not rain!) tomorrow morning. This should continue throughout tomorrow.

Currently many lifts are not running at Hirafu and Higashiyama (see lift operation above). I will update it if they get up and running today.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 31st January 2007, 9:03am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies, cloudy over Mt Tanigawa.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another clear blue sky morning in (most of) Minakami with no wind and perfect visibility. It looks like the sun is here to stay for today, but the snow is forecast to hit from tomorrow! The snow should continue for at least a couple of days brining a good dump of snow for the weekend.

Looking up toward Mt Tanigawa, the clouds are covering the mountain with snow expected throughout the day. Looking at the radar it looks like it will hit around noon but stay confined to the Tanigawa area.

People heading into the backcountry are advised to exercise caution, especially in alpine areas. The recent warm weather, winds and cool nights have produced a number of unstable layers (there is still some burried suface hoar and wind slabs). Where possible steeper terrain should be avoided especially on Southern and Eastern slopes.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 31st January 2007, 9:15am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday turned out to be another fine sunny and very mild day.

This morning things are looking much greyer, though at the moment that has brought with it some light rain. Yes, rain unfortunately. But the hope is that it is will clear up as the forecast is just for cloud today. It is about 3 degrees at the moment and will probably rise to around 6 degrees around midday.

We are still set to see some snow tomorrow though and hopefully we can expect snow through until Sunday.

Lower slopes at resorts around town are looking in real need of fresh snow right now with a few more bare patches appearing over the last few days with the warmer weather. As we have said before this season, the best conditions are to be found higher up where there are still decent conditions to be found.

---

Later update:

Happily the rain cleared up and it has generally just been a cloudy day in the region. It is about +2 degrees at the moment.

We are hoping that snow will be falling by lunchtime tomorrow and also into Friday and Saturday. Bring it on.... (please!)

The unusually warm winter we are experiencing is making both the local and national news at the moment, with record temperatures & flowers blooming when they shouldn't be (in other parts of Japan) and other local stories and anecdotes that we really don't want to be hearing.

But anyway, positive thoughts, for now lets just concentrate on that snowfall over the coming few days....! :)   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 31st January 2007, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Cloudy w/ clearing forecast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A fine good morning to you all. There are a few centimetres of new snow to soften thngs up on the groomed runs. Mild temperatures and a forecasted clearing sky should provide a congenial atmosphere on the slopes today.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: 1.0 C
Maximum: 8.5 C
Minimum: -5.5 C
Wind: Light north-west
Winds aloft: Not observed
Precipitation: Snowing 1 ( snowing at the rate of 1 cm accumulation per hour)
Barometer and trend: 918 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 3 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 80 cm
Foot penetration: 15 cm
Surface: New snow (rimed), size 3.0 mm
Density of surface snow: ~
Crust: not measured
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hazard:
Above Tree Line: Moderate

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. the daily warming may increase this hazard especially in the small terrain sense: e.g. a steep, sun drenched creek/gully bank. It is generally sage mountaineering practise to stay out of gullies and such and stay on top of the terrain, e.g. on the ridge crests and ribs, whenever practicable.

Travel Advisory:
We have decided to keep the hazard rating at "Moderate" below tree line because with the day-time warming this zone will be most affected by the forecast warming (yesterday the temperature maximum in the shade was 8.5 C). So watch the temperature and the terrain features. Yesterday afternoon there was still "dry" (i.e. you could not make a snow-ball) snow down to 900 m a.s.l. in the shady and northern aspect areas.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 31st January 2007, 10:05am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a beautiful day and a fine day to be out on the uncrowded slopes of Shiga Kogen. There is more cloud around this morning - especially in the Yokoteyama and Kumanoyu region of the resort area but there is still a fair amount of blue sky and it is probably going to be another fine day and even early on it is quite mild - though still below 0 degrees.

The snow looks set to arrive sometime tomorrow, so hope to give you more of an update on that in the next report.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 31st January 2007, 10:18am
Weather conditions: Cloudy.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A cloudy start to the day in Nozawa this morning. Temperatures are -5C at Uenotaira and -3C on Yamabiko. The village is currently -2C. No new snow fell last night and the conditions on the lower runs of the resort are not ideal. However up on Yamabiko yesterday there was plenty of fun to be had. Visibility on the mountain is still quite good at Yamabiko but that is set to change later this morning as the expected weather sets in.

The forecast is for snow to begin this morning and to continue through to at least Friday. The snow on Thursday will be quite heavy with at least 20cm expected.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 31st January 2007, 10:24am
Weather conditions: cloudy with spots of blue
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well, it's definately warm. The ground is rearing its ugly head in the street! There's a couple of rocks showing at the top of the half-pipe which haven't been so forgiving on a certain persons snowboard.

The sun is out and there are clouds dashing around the mountains with nothing better to do than just being 'clouds' - Where is our snow clouds? So anyway, about the warmth, it's a pretty ridiculous 1 degree this morning, so who knows what temperatures are in store for later in the day.

Expect more rocks around on the gelande until Thursday - according to the weather forecast we should be getting snow from wednesday afternoon.

Lets wait and see..... !   Read more ...
