Myoko Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 7:31am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, occasional snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow fell in calm skies last night making the pile high and fluffy. In the village, the snows were also quite high with snow plows out quite early.

Today's choice has definitely got to be Seki Onsen if not for the sheer amount of snow, but also for the powder conditions, which are very dry and fluffy.

Here are your Myoko area levels for today:
220cm (Akakura Kanko);
200cm (Akakura Onsen);
220cm at the top, 130 bottom (Suginohara);
180cm (Kumado Snowboard Park);
115cm (Pine Valley);
250cm (Seki Onsen);
110cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
100cm (Madarao Sympathique);
140cm (Madarao Kogen);
150cm (Cupid Valley);
185cm (Myoko Ski Park);
165cm (Togakushi);
140cm (Kurohime);

Furano Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 8:29am
Weather conditions: light snow, skies clearing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Heavy snow on and off yesterday produced an accumulation of around 10cm yesterday. In terms of fresh snow on the mountain this morning, its more a light dusting, as the 10cm was groomed out overnight.

Yesterdays snow was lighter than any we have had in the last week. Getting off course you could easily find untracked powdery turns, however there is a hard crust under the service which is not yet covered. This means you need to be cautious with your turns through the fresh snow and the underneath layer can affect your control.

Heavy snow is forecast later this evening and into tomorrow. Temperatures have dropped again so we are well and truly passed that warm spell last week.

For non-skiers or snowboarders here in Furano, there is lots to do. Snowmobiling, dog sledding, horse sleigh rides, snow tubing, snow rafting, onsens, cheese factory, wine factory, kimono classes, arts and crafts village and the famous Asahiyama Zoo. I mention this because the snow in Furano attracts all types of visitors, some super keen to ski, some not so keen and so these are some of the activites in the snow in Furano for non-skiers.

Niseko Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 9:32am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Everything was open yesterday, all lifts and backcountry gates. It was a field day
for powder buffs. It snowed all day and the wind pushed snow into the protected
areas. Nobody cared that a lot of bushes and sassa grass are still exposed. Stories of
waist deep powder snow were heard over the mountain and in town.

The An'napuri gondola queue extended down the steps and past the ski racks. I would like to know why the lift company has not replaced the ancient gondola ski racks that do not fit snowboards or powderskis limiting numbers in the gondola, causing longer waiting times between powder runs. It is the same on the Higashiyama gondola.

Again, there is a slight difference in the snowfall readings between the Hirafu site and the avalanche report. But taking into consideration the numbers of people out on the hill yesterday, it is probably due to the cover being packed down by a lot of riders. Night skiing was fantastic yesterday, there were still several areas where untouched, waist deep powder was available.

It looks like the lows to our north east are going to continue to strenghten over the next couple of days, and considering they extend right up to the north west (Siberia) there is a good chance of some good snow being dragged down from the continent by a high pressure system pressing hard up against that low. Infact, if you were to draw a boundary line between the two systems it would be pointing straight at us. Let's hope the charts are right.

All lifts are operating at the time of this report.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 10:02am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another 15-20cm of new snow has been reported at Kagura since yesterday evening.

Almlost no wind at all this morning with light snow lazily falling at times with breaks in the snow at times. The clouds even seem like breaking at times so fairly changeable weather today with temperatures above zero. It is a fairly mild +3 degrees at town level as well right now.

The snow should be on and off through today but back tonight and into tomorrow as well.... the forecast is saying that tomorrow will be milder still with a chance of rain instead of snow, so we'll just have to hope that doesn't happen.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 10:03am
Weather conditions: Fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun is shining and the skies are blue in Nozawa now, but I still have more snow to report from this lovely lovely storm. Yesterday it snowed until about 2 in the afternoon before taking a little rest and cranking up again at night. There was about 10 cm of fresh on the doorstep this morning. It is going to be amazing up there today. We are expecting a mostly fine day today with some snow later on and then snow for much of tomorrow. The base is creeping up towards a metre on the bottom slopes and hopefully if the snow doesn't stay away for too long we will be in for a great season. Thanks snow gods!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 10:16am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies, some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a beautiful morning here in Shiga Kogen with a lot of blue sky and not much of the earlier clouds are still lingering on. Bright blue skies and fantastic views look to be the order of the day... not forgetting the excellent snow conditions out there as well.

It is a cold start though, with temperatures reported at the resorts in the range from -5 to -10 and it is not liklely to warm up much during the day. Almost no wind either making it a really good day to be out there on the slopes.

Nighta areas open tonight:

- Sun Valley
- Maruike
- Mammoth
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 10:27am
Weather conditions: Clear, sun, some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a fine sunny morning in Naeba early on, some cloud in the sky (and it looks like more on the way at the moment from the Kagura area) but generally fine with lots of blue sky. There has been about 10cm of new snow on the ground, with the Kagura resort reporting 15-20cm of fresh snow to play in today, so it should be a good day out there.

It's about -3 degrees and might well rise above zero and be relatively mild, especially compared to the last few days over New Year. Tomorrow looks set to be fairly mild as well, but we may still see snow.

All the usual lifts are moving today along with the two gondolas and Dragondola taking people over to Tashiro.

Once again today nighta open until 10pm and then once the lifts close, a firework display.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 10:59am
Weather conditions: Snowing in the upper mountains, clear in lower Minakami
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the snow accumulated another 20cm in the valley bringing the current snow depth this morning to 45cm. At the upper ski areas there has been a total of over 100cm of snow brought by the recent storm creating large powder pockets in some bowls that are almost too deep to ride!

The outlook for today is for overcast weather turning into snow tomorrow morning, which should continue throughout the day. Saturday brings fine weather to Minakami, which should be good for settling the snow. There is more snow forecast from Sunday.

There has been a lot of new snow fallen and wind transported in the last 5 days, on top of the thick rain crust from December 29th. This is causing VERY UNSTABLE conditions. There have already been 4 fatalities in the last 3 days from avalanche activity. Powder hounds would be advised to stay in bounds and wait for the new snow to settle.

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 3rd January 2008, 11:59am
Weather conditions: Light snow flurries
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow came again this AM with 5 cms at the base and about 10 cm up on top. Packed powder and groomed conditions with a superb base to build on here in Hakuba now. Currently patches of blue sky appearing in Hakuba today, but still lightly snowing on top of the upper slopes.

Continued snowfall through this coming week, with flurries expected tomorrow bring more snow.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

4 backcountry travelers dead after being hit in their tent by a large snow Avalanche in the Hakuba area.

EXTREME caution should be taken by anyone planning to go into the back country over the next week. Travel in the backcountry is ill advised as all slopes are being rapidly loaded with large amounts of snow, that is over riding the December 29th rain crust that can be found below tree line. Expect large scale loose and slab avalanches occurring in the upper surface layers. There will be definite instabilities in the new snow and possible slabs from the rain crust / new snow interface. High winds from the North West in the Alpine have produced enormous cornices on lee slopes as well as rapidly loaded South and East facing gullies. Be especially cautious if moving from scoured ridges into gullies and around stressed convex terrain. In addition to being VERY DANGEROUS in the backcountry at present, slogging up through 2 metres plus(+) of deep powder makes for a bit of a mission as well. Not a week for hiking in the backcountry.

A great time to stay in bounds and get some great face shots. Don't get greedy for powder this new snow needs time to settle!

Be aware of temperatures and be extra cautious if temperatures suddenly rise.
