Minakami Now!

Friday 4th January 2008, 7:54am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow has come again as forecast. 8 cm of fresh snow lies on the ground this morning at the valley level with a current temperature of -2 deg C. It looks like the snow will become heavier towards midday today then start to subside this afternoon.

Tomorrow brings a day of sun, so should be a great day to hit the slopes before the new years break finishes, with a lot of powder lying around on-piste. Backcountry travel is not adviseable at present with a large amount of new snow that is unsettled which could cause large loose snow avalanches.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Friday 4th January 2008, 8:47am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It snowed all day yesterday but not enough to completely cover the off piste tracks from the day before. The thermometer at the bottom of the King gondola had a reading of -1 at 10:00am while the big Ace thermometer was at -9 at 10:30am. All the run in the Grand Niseko area have great cover and there were tracked powder hits to be had on the sides as well as good powder for those who wanted to look for it.

The weather charts are maintaing the same analysis as yesterday. So, the next couple of days should continue to bring snowfall and poor visibility. The avalache report notes a serious risk of slides due to rapidly forming cornices and drops in the off-piste areas. Take care if riding outside the gates.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 4th January 2008, 9:52am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is yet another snowy morning in Nozawa. It is coming down quite heavily at the moment and should continue to do so this morning. There was about 10cm of fresh stuff on the doorstep this morning. Yesterday was quite warm so expect the lower slopes to be a bit icy under a thin layer of powder. In the long range forecast we have a mixture of snowmen and sunny days. Should be great conditions for next week when all the Japanese holidaymakers go home.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 4th January 2008, 10:00am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday there was more cloud than forecast but it was generally a fine if not dull day out there. This morning it is snowing again - fairly light snow at the moment and around 5cm of fresh snow on the ground. Very light wind, though stronger higher up. It is just above zero at the moment and will probably hover around that temperature point throughout the day.

As the forecast stands the snow should be clearing up this evening and tomorrow looks like it will just be cloudy and a little warmer than today - maybe rising up to around +6 degrees in the town. There is a chance of rain later in the day (hopefully snow higher up if anything) with more snow forecast for Monday.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 4th January 2008, 10:11am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is snowing again this morning and while there is not much fresh snow on the ground here in the village, Kagura is reporting another 10cm of snow since last night.

It is -5 at the base this morning. Kagura reporting wester - north-westerly winds of 5-20m today, and the Kagura No 1 lift is not moving early on due to the wind conditions. The same applies to the Dragondola which is waiting to see how things turn out, but early this morning they are not operating that lift.

The snow should continue throughout today and into the evening. It looks like tomorrow will be just cloudy with the snow clouds moving on, but they may be back with us on Sunday.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 4th January 2008, 10:26am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a fine day but this morning we are back to the snow once again this morning. Not much on the ground yet but it is coming down nicely at the moment. It is another cold morning with temperatures way down and approaching (minus) double figures in some places. Don't expect it to warm up anytime soon. Lots of low cloud and the snow means that visibility is low today so care needs to be taken.

It is currently looking like the weather should clear up some for the weekend, with no snowfall forecast for at least tomorrow but there is a chance of more snow clouds being with us on Sunday.

Nighta for today is planned at the following resort areas:

- Mammoth
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 4th January 2008, 11:04am
Weather conditions: Light snow flurries
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A small amount of snow last night with cloud down to about 1000 metres this morning and snow falling slowly with around 5 cm on the ground this morning. The resorts have been crowded the last few days and are still extremely busy even with the New Year holiday over. Light North-Westerlies back today. Hard pressed to find much powder today after most runs have been destroyed by riders over the last few days...

Overcast/Sunny tomorrow with possible snow flurries beginning again Sunday.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

4 backcountry travelers dead after being hit in their tent by a large snow Avalanche in the Hakuba area.

EXTREME caution should be taken by anyone planning to go into the back country over the next week. Travel in the backcountry is ill advised as all slopes have been rapidly loaded with large amounts of snow, that is over riding the December 29th rain crust that can be found below tree line. Expect large scale loose and slab avalanches occurring in the upper surface layers. There will be definite instabilities in the new snow and possible slabs from the rain crust / new snow interface. High winds from the North West in the Alpine have produced enormous cornices on lee slopes as well as rapidly loaded South and East facing gullies. Be especially cautious if moving from scoured ridges into gullies and around stressed convex terrain. In addition to being VERY DANGEROUS in the backcountry at present, slogging up through 2 metres plus(+) of deep powder makes for a bit of a mission as well. Not a week for hiking in the backcountry.

Be aware of temperatures and be extra cautious if temperatures suddenly rise.

A team has gone out today digging pits in the Tsugaike area so expect more details on the current snow-pack condition soon.

Furano Now!

Friday 4th January 2008, 12:27pm
Weather conditions: snowing lightly, patches of blue skies.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Extended periods of light snowfall has left a decent accumulation in town overnight. There is close to 20cm in town, which means more up on the mountain. The snow quality is very high, with perfect powder snow weather patterns.

The pick of the runs today will be Challenge, with this 20cm enough to cover the moguls on the run.

Snow if forecast for the rest of the day, through tomorrow, and each day for the rest of the week.

Conditions on the moutain are generally excellent, with the icy crusts from a few weeks ago now well and truly covered.
