Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 5th April 2007, 8:16am
Weather conditions: Light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
An overcast start to the morning today and more light snow is expected to fall. After the beatiful clear start yesterday more light snow settled in to help keep the conditions reasonably good at the top. Visibility at the moment at the summit is poor but alot better just below the very top lifts. Wind is sitting around 20km/h. Base depths are largely unchanged with 150cm at Yamabiko. Temperatures are -2C at the summit and -1C at the bottom of the Uenotaira Quad.

As said, there will be more light snow today with tomorrow being partly cloudy. Saturday will be warmer with a great mostly clear day expected.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is a bit of snow to report this morning... not much, just a sprinkling at town level with 5cm reported up at Kagura, so the slopes up there should have had a bit of a topup. The snow has stopped now though and it quickly seems to be clearing up with even a bit of sun shining through at the moment.

Tomorrow is forecast to be a fine day with a few more days of decent weather lined up after that through the weekend.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is snow settled on the roads this morning for the first time in a while; it is less than a centimeter in the village but may well be more up high. The sky is clearing up to give another beautiful spring day now and the temperature will be rising fairly high again today, the maximum for today will be +3 which doesn't sound that warm but it is feeling fairly warm these days with the sunshine. No one is wearing hats or gloves during the day around the village anymore so I guess that means spring is definitely here!!
The forecast is giving mostly sunny with cloudy spells today with a possibility of snow showers tomorrow afternoon.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 5th April 2007, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good news this morning as there is a fresh blanket of snow to report in all areas of Shiga Kogen - with up to 10cm in some areas. It is also a cold morning and feels more like winter once again rather than April. But no complaints.... the courses will be in good condition this morning and the lucky few out there early on will be smiling.

The snow clouds seem to be clearing up though and there are patches of blue sky, especially in the Sun Valley/Maruike area. Things may well clear up in wider areas as the morning progresses and indeed the forecast is for a fine day today and tomorrow.

Naeba Now!

Thursday 5th April 2007, 10:06am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well we did get some snow overnight - 5cm of fresh snow reported at Kagura. Naeba doesn't look like it has changed much (the bare patches on the lower slopes remain bare), but higher up courses will have had a bit of fresh cover.

At the moment it is just cloudy and the forecast is for things to clear up as the day progresses, with decent weather forecast for tomorrow.

Lift operations at Naeba are the same as yesterday.   Read more ...

Crack "O" Nooners Report

Apologies out to all of our loyal readers who woke to no report this morning. We were up on Happo checking the conditions for an event this weekend (Tri-Modal Challenge) where skiers, boarders and telemarkers will come together and unite for a combined race. We did receive a few cm of new snow yesterday afternoon through the evening which made for some fun soft turns on top of the spring crust. Temperatures are cool and should remain cool all day around -1 deg.C . Winds are light to moderate from the North. Partly sunny skies today and expected to remain that way for the next few days.

( See Backcountry Advisory Below )

Avalanche Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Moderate

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Expect some blowing snow and cooler temperatures atop the peaks today. Spring is a good time to see glide cracks in the snow where a deep fracture will open up in areas of tension. You don't want to end up in one of those. Other hazards to look out for are rock fall from cliff faces and subsequent debris on top of the snow.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 5th April 2007, 16:27pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow has continued to fall for most of the day today, not really settling at the village level but Tenjindaira has recorded over 20cm of fresh snow! This should make for great snow conditions on the weekend as the temperatures look like they will remain low for tomorrow tehn be on the rise on Saturday.   Read more ...
