Myoko Now!

Monday 5th December 2011, 10:06am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, fog, rain turning to wet snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Curse climate change! One degree colder, and we would have serious snow here this morning. I can call it wet snow at the moment, although the precipitation today has moved between steady rain and rain that occasionally goes to white (I hardly noticed except when I saw ice crystals on the brown dog's back on the morning walk). Well, that's at the base level, so there's every chance the the slopes and peaks are starting to get the beginning of the base for the new season.

The fog layer is now moving steadily down; hopefully that means colder air as well.

The official (planned) openings for the ski areas are:

Akakura Kanko Ski Area (Akakan): December 17
Akakura Onsen Ski Area: mid-December
Ikenotaira Ski Area: December 17
Myoko Suginohara: December 23
Madarao Kogen Ski Area: Pre-open December 10-11; full open December 16
Seki Onsen Ski Area: no official date posted for this year (December 1 last season)
Tangram Madarao: December 17

These dates are when they officially open, of course; if there's no snow, they won't be opening; if there's heavy snow, many will open earlier. We'll keep you posted!

Yuzawa Now!

Monday 5th December 2011, 10:07am
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain, light snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
10cm of new snow up at Kagura is the official news from the resort and with snowy conditions up there during the day hopefully we can get a bit more. A colder morning as well with -2 being reported. Kagura will have the quad lift moving for the weekdays this week so that 1300m course is open.

Down in town we have rain falling and a temperature of about +4 degrees. Things should get colder later on in the day and it will hopefully turn to sleet and maybe we might be lucky and get a sprinkling of snow overnight into tomorrow.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 5th December 2011, 10:35am
Weather conditions: overcast, light wet snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterdays wet weather stayed through the evening, never really materializing into the big snowfall that the reports promised.

Whilst snow did fall it was very wet, almost sleet and compacted right down. Fantastic conditions for laying down a good snow base for the coming weeks but pretty far from epic riding conditions at the moment.

Temperatures staying nice and low for the next couple of days with constant light snow forecast, just hope it dries up a bit!

Current lift operations at time of writing (subject to change depending on conditions)

Hirafu:
Hirafu Ace Quad and Ace Pair 3 and family pair running and Hooded King 3

Annupuri:
Gondola, jumbo pair and Annupuri Pair 2 and 3 running.

Niseko Village:
Banzai and Community chair

Hanazono:
Hanazono plans to open on 10th December.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 5th December 2011, 11:45am
Weather conditions: Rain, cloud, snow up top
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Things are a bit more winter-like in Nozawa this morning and a quick look outside and the snow is visible with a dusting down to around 700m just above the village. It's rain down in the village but hopefully that won't last for long.

Up top we can expect more snow around Thursday - whether there will be enough for Nozawa to open on Saturday, no-one knows yet of course. We will keep you informed!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 5th December 2011, 11:52am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow in Shiga Kogen this morning and the runs around the resort areas are once again white. There was 1-2cm on the car this morning and so hopefully upper slopes got a bit more of a covering and while it is not the kind of snowfall that will give us a lot of cm of new snow, it should continue for most of the day.

Look to Thursday night for the next snowfall after today - still nothing major though. It should stay cold through the week though.

Official snow depths [5th Dec 11]:
Takamagahara Mammoth - 20cm
Ichinose Family - 20cm
Kumanoyu - 20cm
Yakebitaiyama - 30cm

Resorts part open [5th Dec 11]:
Takamagahara Mammoth - one triple lift
Ichinose Family - one pair lift
Kumanoyu - two pair lifts
Yakebitaiyama - one pair lift   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Monday 5th December 2011, 12:25pm
Weather conditions: CLear
New snowfall: 15cm
Snow depth: 90cm
It was an eventful weekend with substantial snowfalls really bringing us into depths of winter. The snow continued this morning and another 15cm of accumulation has been measured in the village. The weather has now cleared and we are left with good clear conditions and some sunshine. The runs that are open on the mountain now are in really top shape and we are now waiting for additional areas of the mountain to open up. This should not be too far away.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Monday 5th December 2011, 15:01pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Cold and wet here but the silver lining to that is that there is snow falling in the resorts. Low cloud and glimpses of white on the treetops which we haven't seen for a while. It is due to clear up tomorrow so not sure how long the white will stick around for. Tenjin is getting a decent sprinkling at the moment, though with the warmer weather coming right behind, it might not be enough to get them open.   Read more ...
